The Logitech G27 remains one of the most recognizable racing wheels in sim racing history, known for its sturdy construction, leather-wrapped rim, metal pedals, and included H-pattern shifter. Although it has long since been replaced by newer models, it still attracts attention from budget-conscious racers and enthusiasts looking for a dependable entry into more immersive driving.

Its appeal comes from a mix of durability, tactile controls, and a driving feel that still holds up better than many basic wheels. With force feedback, a clutch pedal, and a separate gear shifter included as standard, the G27 offers a complete package that helped define what many players expected from an affordable sim racing setup.

Design and Build Quality

The Logitech G27 still gives a strong first impression because it was built at a time when Logitech’s mid-range wheels emphasized durability over flashy styling. The wheel rim uses a brushed metal center plate, stainless-steel paddle shifters, and hand-stitched leather wrapping, which helps it feel more like a serious driving controller than a toy. At 11 inches in diameter, the rim is smaller than a real road car steering wheel, but it is a practical size for desks, wheel stands, and compact sim rigs. The leather can become shiny with age, and heavily used units may show wear around the thumb grips, but the core structure usually remains solid even after years of racing.

  • Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts

The main wheel housing is made from thick plastic, yet it does not feel flimsy. There is very little flex when the wheel is clamped properly, and the internal gear-driven mechanism is protected by a sturdy casing. The clamp system is one of the G27’s most useful design features: two built-in clamps tighten from the top, making it quick to attach to a desk without tools. For a more permanent setup, the base also supports hard mounting with bolts, which is preferable if you are using a dedicated cockpit or dealing with stronger force feedback settings. Cable routing is handled through channels underneath the base, keeping the pedal, shifter, power, and USB connections reasonably tidy.

The button layout is simple but functional. The wheel itself has six face buttons, two paddle shifters, and no modern directional pad or rotary controls, so it feels sparse compared with newer wheels such as the Logitech G29, G923, or Thrustmaster T300 add-ons. The red LED shift lights across the top of the hub are a distinctive touch, especially in supported PC titles, and they add to the sense that the G27 was designed with racing games in mind rather than general console navigation. The paddle shifters deserve particular praise: they are metal, click positively, and have held up well on many long-serving units.

Overall build quality is one of the reasons the G27 remains popular on the used market. Its materials are not premium by modern direct-drive standards, and the plastic housing does reveal its age, but the parts you touch most often—the leather rim, metal spokes, and paddles—still feel satisfying. For sim racers looking at a second-hand G27 today, condition matters more than age alone. A well-kept example can still feel tight and dependable, while a heavily abused one may have play in the wheel shaft, worn clamps, noisy gears, or loose pedal connections. In good condition, the G27’s design remains one of Logitech’s most balanced combinations of practicality, comfort, and long-term toughness.

Force Feedback and Driving Feel

The Logitech G27 uses a dual-motor force feedback system with helical gearing, and that combination remains one of the main reasons the wheel is still discussed years after its release. Compared with cheaper gear-driven wheels, the G27 delivers a stronger and more detailed sense of resistance through corners, under braking, and over uneven surfaces. It does not feel as smooth as modern belt-driven or direct-drive wheels, but it provides enough information to make racing games feel responsive and engaging rather than vague.

On track, the wheel communicates weight transfer clearly. As the front tires load up through a bend, the rim builds resistance in a predictable way, making it easier to judge grip and avoid pushing too far into understeer. When the rear of the car starts to rotate, the wheel can snap back with enough speed to help catch slides, especially in titles with well-tuned force feedback. The 900-degree rotation also gives the G27 a more realistic steering range than entry-level wheels with limited lock, which is useful for road cars, drifting, rally stages, and older race cars that require larger steering inputs.

The main limitation is refinement. Because the G27 is gear-driven, you can feel some mechanical notching through the rim, particularly during slow steering movements or when small forces are being translated. It is smoother than the older Logitech G25, but it still has a faint gear texture that newer Thrustmaster belt systems and current direct-drive bases largely avoid. The wheel can also be noisy when force feedback effects become aggressive, with rattling over kerbs, crashes, gravel, or rough road surfaces. In a daytime setup this may not matter, but it is noticeable in a quiet room or shared living space.

Strength is another area where expectations need to be realistic. The G27 has enough torque to make cars feel alive, but it will not physically fight the driver like a high-end modern wheelbase. Heavy open-wheel cars, GT cars, and rally cars can feel convincing, yet the feedback is more about texture and directional cues than raw power. For many casual and intermediate sim racers, that balance is actually pleasant: the wheel gives useful information without causing fatigue during longer sessions.

Driving feel highlights

  • Steering detail: Good communication of grip loss, kerbs, bumps, and car balance for a gear-driven wheel.
  • Rotation: 900 degrees of steering lock helps road cars and rally cars feel more natural.
  • Force strength: Solid for its age, though clearly below modern belt-drive and direct-drive systems.
  • Smoothness: Noticeable gear feel and some chatter under heavy effects.
  • Noise: Louder than many newer wheels, especially over kerbs or rough surfaces.

The G27’s force feedback still holds up well if judged as an affordable used-market wheel rather than a competitor to modern premium hardware. Its steering feel is informative, consistent, and strong enough to support serious practice in racing sims. Drivers upgrading from a controller or a basic non-feedback wheel will find it transformative. Those coming from a modern direct-drive setup, however, will notice the lower torque, gear noise, and reduced smoothness immediately. Its greatest strength is that it captures the fundamentals of sim racing feedback well: grip, weight, correction, and road texture are all present in a way that makes driving more immersive and easier to control.

Pedals and Gear Shifter Performance

The Logitech G27’s three-pedal set remains one of its strongest assets, especially for drivers who want a more complete manual driving experience than entry-level two-pedal wheels provide. The metal pedal faces give the unit a more premium feel than the plastic-heavy setups common in budget wheels, and the spacing is wide enough for basic heel-and-toe practice. The throttle is light and easy to modulate, making it comfortable for long sessions in touring cars, GT cars, and road vehicles. The clutch adds an extra layer of involvement in games that support manual starts and H-pattern shifting, which is still a major part of the G27’s appeal today.

The brake pedal is the most distinctive of the three because it uses a noticeably stiffer spring than the throttle and clutch. It does not have a load cell, so braking is still measured by pedal travel rather than pressure, but the heavier resistance helps create a more convincing feel than many basic potentiometer brake pedals. In practice, this means threshold braking can be learned with some consistency, though it requires muscle memory based on position rather than true force. For casual racing and older sims, the stock brake is perfectly usable; for serious competitive driving, many owners eventually look at rubber inserts, spring mods, or aftermarket pedal upgrades to achieve a firmer, more progressive brake response.

The pedal base is fairly large and stable, with a fold-out carpet grip that helps keep it planted on a rug. On hard floors, it can slide forward under heavy braking unless it is braced against a wall, mounted to a wheel stand, or bolted into a cockpit. This is less a flaw of the G27 specifically and more a limitation of floor-mounted pedal sets, but it matters because the brake is stiff enough to push the unit away during aggressive driving. When secured properly, the pedals feel reliable and predictable, and the metal faces have proven durable over years of use.

H-pattern shifter feel and usability

The included six-speed H-pattern shifter with push-down reverse is a major differentiator for the G27. It gives the wheel a level of immersion that many modern wheel bundles lack unless a separate shifter is purchased. The throws are short, the gates are clearly defined, and gear selection is quick enough for road cars, classic racers, rally stages, and drifting. It is not as heavy or mechanical-feeling as higher-end standalone shifters from brands such as Thrustmaster, Fanatec, or Moza, but it is responsive and enjoyable for the price point the G27 now occupies on the used market.

The shifter also includes extra buttons and a directional pad, which are useful for menu navigation, camera changes, ignition, headlights, brake bias adjustments, or pit controls depending on the game. The main drawback is that the housing feels less substantial than the wheel and pedals, and the shift action can feel toy-like compared with real car hardware. Over time, heavily used units may develop missed shifts, looseness, or worn microswitches, so the condition of the shifter is worth checking carefully when buying second-hand.

  • Pedal strengths: metal faces, clutch included, good spacing, durable feel, usable brake resistance.
  • Pedal weaknesses: no load cell, possible floor sliding, brake precision depends on travel-based muscle memory.
  • Shifter strengths: included H-pattern unit, six speeds plus reverse, useful extra controls, strong immersion.
  • Shifter weaknesses: light shift action, plastic housing, possible wear on older used examples.

Overall, the G27’s pedals and shifter give it much of its lasting charm. While modern load-cell pedal sets and sturdier standalone shifters outperform it in realism, the complete package still feels satisfying for enthusiasts who enjoy manual driving. For anyone building an affordable sim racing setup around older road cars, classic race cars, or casual online racing, this part of the G27 package holds up remarkably well.

Compatibility with PC and Consoles

The Logitech G27 was released in an era when PC and PlayStation support mattered most, and that remains the core of its compatibility story today. On Windows, the wheel is still very usable, especially for sim racers who are comfortable installing older Logitech software and doing some manual configuration. It connects over USB, uses a separate power brick for force feedback, and is recognized by many racing games as a classic Logitech wheel with 900 degrees of rotation, clutch input, H-pattern shifting, and separate pedal axes when configured correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For PC use, the G27 typically relies on Logitech Gaming Software rather than the newer G Hub platform. This older driver package allows users to set steering rotation, centering spring behavior, force feedback strength, and pedal options. In modern titles, the wheel may not always appear as a preset device, but manual binding usually solves the problem. Steering, throttle, brake, clutch, paddle shifters, shifter gates, and buttons can normally be assigned without much trouble in games such as Assetto Corsa, iRacing, rFactor 2, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Automobilista, and older Codemasters racing titles.

Logitech G27 USB Racing Wheel for PC
  • The powerful, dual-motor force feedback mechanism with helical gearing smoothly and accurately simulates traction loss
  • Six-speed shifter with push-down reverse gear allows you to quickly choose exactly the right gear.
  • RPM/shift indicator LEDs integrate with racing game software to indicate when the user should shift gears.
  • Realistic 11-Inch wheel with leather-wrapped rim provides a more comfortable, true-to-life racing experience for hours on end.
  • Steel gas, brake, and clutch pedals deliver precise throttle, braking, and shifting control for heightened realism.

Console compatibility is more limited. The G27 officially supports PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, where it works well with compatible racing games from that generation. It does not have native support for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or Xbox 360 in the same plug-and-play way. Some players use third-party adapters to connect the G27 to newer consoles, but results vary depending on the adapter, firmware, game, and whether full force feedback, clutch, and shifter support are preserved. For anyone buying specifically for modern console racing, this uncertainty is a major drawback.

Platform support at a glance

Platform Compatibility Typical experience
Windows PC Strong with older Logitech drivers Best overall option, often requires manual setup in newer games
PlayStation 3 Officially supported Good plug-and-play experience in supported titles
PlayStation 2 Officially supported Works with selected older racing games
PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Not natively supported Requires adapters, with mixed results
Xbox consoles Not natively supported Adapter-dependent and not ideal for guaranteed compatibility

This makes the G27 a much safer recommendation for PC sim racing than for console use today. On PC, its age is manageable because software profiles, community guides, and in-game input menus keep it relevant. On modern consoles, the lack of native support can turn a good second-hand bargain into a frustrating purchase if the required adapter adds cost or compromises features. Buyers should check the exact platform and game they plan to use before committing, especially if clutch and H-pattern shifting are part of the appeal.

Setup, Software, and Calibration

Setting up the Logitech G27 is generally straightforward, but it feels more old-school than modern plug-and-play racing wheels. The wheel uses a separate power brick, a USB connection to the PC or console, and individual cables for the pedals and shifter that plug into the wheel base. Cable routing is tidy enough once everything is mounted, but the rear connections can be awkward to reach if the wheel is already clamped to a desk or bolted to a cockpit. For the best experience, it is worth connecting the pedals and shifter first, securing the wheel, then plugging in power and USB last.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On PC, the G27 relies on Logitech’s older driver package rather than the newer G Hub software used by current Logitech hardware. Most users will want the Logitech Gaming Software 5.10 driver, which properly recognizes the G27 and exposes wheel rotation, force feedback strength, centering spring, pedal behavior, and button assignments. Once installed, Windows should detect the wheel reliably, and the automatic startup calibration will rotate the wheel from lock to lock before centering itself. That calibration movement is normal, though it can be loud because of the G27’s gear-driven mechanism.

Driver and wheel settings

The most useful setting is the steering rotation range, which can be adjusted up to 900 degrees. For road cars and many simulators, 900 degrees gives the most authentic steering ratio. For arcade racers or older titles, lowering the range to 540, 360, or even 270 degrees can make the car feel more responsive. Force feedback strength is also worth adjusting per game rather than leaving everything at maximum. Running the wheel too strong can exaggerate gear chatter, create clipping, and reduce the detail you feel through the rim.

  • 900 degrees: Best for serious simulators and road-car realism.
  • 540 degrees: A good compromise for GT, touring, and rally games.
  • 270–360 degrees: Useful for arcade racers or games with limited steering support.
  • Centering spring: Usually best disabled in the driver and managed by the game’s force feedback system.

Calibration inside individual racing games is just as as the driver installation. Most modern PC sims still include wheel calibration menus that let you set steering lock, throttle, brake, clutch, and shifter inputs. The G27’s pedals are detected as separate axes in supported software, which helps with smooth throttle control and consistent braking. If a game combines pedals by default, changing the setting to separate pedal axes is usually necessary for proper simulation use.

The six-speed shifter also needs attention during setup. In many games, it must be assigned manually gear by gear, along with reverse and the clutch pedal. Once mapped, it works well in titles that support H-pattern shifting, but some newer games default to paddle shifting unless manual clutch and H-pattern options are enabled. The shifter’s extra buttons and directional pad can also be mapped to useful functions such as look left/right, headlights, pit limiter, brake bias, or menu navigation.

Common setup issues

The G27’s age means setup can occasionally require patience, especially on newer versions of Windows. If the wheel is not detected correctly, reinstalling the older Logitech Gaming Software, switching USB ports, or avoiding unpowered USB hubs often solves the issue. Some users also need to run games after the wheel has completed its startup calibration, rather than plugging it in after the game is already open. Once configured, however, the G27 is stable and predictable, and its settings usually remain intact between sessions.

Performance in Popular Racing Games

The Logitech G27’s real strength is that it still feels convincing across a wide range of racing titles, especially on PC where older and modern sims continue to support it well. Its gear-driven force feedback is not as smooth or quiet as today’s belt-driven and direct-drive wheels, but it delivers enough information about grip loss, kerb strikes, understeer, and weight transfer to remain useful rather than merely nostalgic. In games with detailed force feedback tuning, the G27 can feel surprisingly alive, though it benefits from careful adjustment to avoid rattling, clipping, or excessive center spring effects.

In Assetto Corsa, the G27 remains one of the better older wheels to use. The game’s force feedback communicates front-end grip clearly, and the wheel pairs well with slower road cars, GT machinery, and classic manual cars where the included H-pattern shifter adds a lot to the experience. The 900-degree rotation also suits road cars and drift setups, while the pedals are consistent enough for learning braking points. The main limitation is the brake pedal’s potentiometer-based feel, which makes fine threshold braking harder than with a load-cell upgrade, but it is still very playable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

iRacing is another strong match for the G27, particularly for beginners and intermediate racers. The wheel provides enough detail to catch slides and feel changes in surface grip, and the pedals are dependable once calibrated properly. In competitive online racing, the G27 will not be the limiting factor for most new drivers; consistency, racecraft, and setup knowledge matter far more at first. That said, drivers moving into high-downforce cars or endurance racing may eventually want a stronger wheelbase and a more precise brake pedal for better repeatability over long stints.

In rFactor 2 and Automobilista 2, the G27 can still deliver a rewarding drive, but these titles expose its mechanical roughness more clearly. Strong kerb effects and high-frequency road detail can make the wheel chatter, especially if force feedback strength is set too high. Reducing gain, damping harsh spikes, and letting the game’s steering lock match the car can make a big difference. Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator are also excellent fits because the 900-degree steering, pedals, and shifter create a relaxed, immersive setup where ultimate force feedback fidelity is less critical.

  • Best suited for: Assetto Corsa, iRacing, older SimBin titles, truck simulators, rally games, and classic manual-car driving.
  • Still enjoyable in: rFactor 2, Automobilista 2, Project CARS 2, and Dirt Rally with sensible force feedback settings.
  • Less ideal for: titles that favor very smooth high-torque feedback or newer console-focused games without direct support.

Arcade and sim-cade games such as Forza Horizon or Need for Speed are playable on PC when recognized correctly, but they rarely show the G27 at its best. These games often prioritize controller-friendly handling and may require extra configuration to make the wheel feel natural. Rally titles, especially Dirt Rally and Richard Burns Rally, are more rewarding because the wheel’s quick enough response and tactile feedback help with loose-surface corrections, even if the gear noise becomes more noticeable during rapid countersteering.

Overall, the G27 still performs credibly in popular racing games as long as expectations are realistic. It cannot match the smoothness, torque, or fine detail of modern direct-drive systems, and its pedals are basic by current enthusiast standards. Yet in well-supported PC sims, it continues to offer an engaging, complete driving package with a proper clutch and shifter, making it far more capable than many entry-level wheels that look newer but provide a less immersive setup.

Value for Money and Long-Term Verdict

The Logitech G27’s value depends heavily on its used-market price and condition. When it launched, it sat in the serious entry-level to mid-range category, offering a leather-wrapped wheel, metal paddle shifters, a three-pedal set, and a separate H-pattern shifter in one package. Today, that same bundle can still be attractive because many newer wheels at similar second-hand prices either lack a clutch pedal, exclude a shifter, or rely on lighter-feeling pedal assemblies. For buyers who want a complete manual-driving setup without immediately moving into direct drive hardware, the G27 remains a strong candidate.

  • Shifter: The sim racing shifter for G29 and G920 Driving Force Racing Wheels: Adds realistic shifting to your racing rig

Its biggest long-term strength is durability. Many G27 units have survived years of use in titles such as Assetto Corsa, iRacing, rFactor 2, Euro Truck Simulator 2, and older Gran Turismo releases. The wheel base can develop gear noise, the optical encoder may eventually fail, and heavily used pedals can suffer from dirty potentiometers, but these issues are well documented and often repairable. Replacement parts, community guides, and simple maintenance fixes are still widely available, which gives the G27 an advantage over obscure or less-supported budget wheels.

Compared with modern alternatives, the G27 does show its age. Gear-driven force feedback is not as smooth or quiet as belt-driven and direct drive systems, and the 900-degree rotation, while still useful, no longer feels premium on its own. It also lacks modern console support, integrated PlayStation 5 or Xbox compatibility, and the refined software ecosystems found with current Logitech, Thrustmaster, Fanatec, and Moza products. If realistic steering detail, low latency, and upgrade paths are top priorities, a newer wheel base will deliver a more convincing experience.

For the right buyer, however, the G27 still makes sense. It is best suited to newcomers who want proper pedals and a shifter, returning sim racers building a budget PC setup, or casual drivers who value reliability over the latest technology. It is less ideal for competitive drivers planning to race seriously every week, especially if they will soon want a load-cell brake or a stronger wheel base. A clean, fully working G27 at a fair price remains a capable and enjoyable racing wheel, but it should be purchased as a well-aged classic rather than a modern benchmark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Logitech G27 still worth buying today?

The Logitech G27 can still be worth buying if you find one in good condition at a fair used price, especially for PC sim racing. Its metal pedals, leather-wrapped wheel, and included H-pattern shifter still make it feel more complete than many entry-level bundles. However, it is an older gear-driven wheel, so it is louder and less smooth than newer belt-driven or direct-drive options.

Does the Logitech G27 work with Windows 10 or Windows 11?

Yes, the G27 can work on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but it usually requires Logitech’s older Gaming Software rather than the newer G Hub app. Once installed, you can calibrate the wheel rotation, force feedback strength, pedals, and shifter through the software and in-game settings. Some users may need to run the installer in compatibility mode or reconnect the wheel if Windows does not detect it correctly at first.

Is the Logitech G27 compatible with PS4, PS5, or Xbox consoles?

The G27 was officially designed for PC, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3, so it does not natively work with PS4, PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series consoles. Some third-party adapters can add limited support, but compatibility varies by game and may introduce setup issues or input quirks. If console compatibility is your main priority, a newer wheel with official support is usually the safer choice.

How good are the G27 pedals and shifter compared with newer wheels?

The G27 pedals are still one of its strongest features, with a solid metal construction and separate clutch, brake, and throttle pedals. The brake pedal is not load-cell based, so it does not feel as realistic as higher-end modern pedal sets, but it is reliable and easy to mod. The included H-pattern shifter adds a lot of value, although it feels lighter and more toy-like than premium standalone shifters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the biggest problems to watch for when buying a used Logitech G27?

Check that the wheel calibrates smoothly on startup, the force feedback does not grind excessively, and the steering does not have unusual dead zones or skipping. Test all pedals for input spikes, especially the throttle and brake, because dirty potentiometers are common on older units. Also confirm that the power supply, USB cable, pedal cable, and shifter cable are included, since replacements can reduce the value of the deal.

Bottom Line

The Logitech G27 remains a durable, engaging, and surprisingly capable racing wheel for enthusiasts who want a more authentic sim racing experience without jumping straight into modern high-end gear. Its metal-and-leather build, strong pedal set, and included H-pattern shifter still give it lasting appeal, even if its gear-driven force feedback is louder and less refined than newer belt or direct-drive options.

If you can find a well-maintained G27 at a fair price and it supports the games or platform you plan to use, it is still a smart entry point into serious sim racing. Just factor in its age, driver compatibility, and lack of newer features before buying, especially if you want plug-and-play support on current consoles.
