Which controller is easier to connect to a PC?
F710: a dedicated USB receiver
The F710 is wireless through a 2.4 GHz USB nano receiver, not Bluetooth. Logitech’s guide describes turning on the pad and plugging the receiver into the computer. This makes it a direct choice if you prefer a dedicated receiver, but it uses a USB port and does not offer the Bluetooth option documented for the Xbox controller. Xbox Wireless Controller: Bluetooth or USB-C
Microsoft documents Bluetooth on supported Windows 10/11 PCs, as well as USB-C wired play on its cable-included bundle page. The standalone product listing says a compatible USB-C cable is sold separately for Windows button mapping through the Xbox Accessories app, so check the exact package rather than assuming a cable is in the box. Support depends on compatible devices and OS versions. Xbox Wireless Controller + USB-C Cable · Xbox Wireless Controller

The F710’s distinguishing feature for legacy compatibility is its hardware switch between XInput and DirectInput. Logitech suggests XInput for new games; DirectInput is the mode to try when a specific older title expects it. Logitech also says its gaming software is not necessary unless you are using DirectInput mode. Logitech’s input-mode guidance
#1 Best Overall
- The 2.4 GHz wireless connection uses a tiny Plug-and-Forget Nano-receiver that stays in your USB port, even on laptops, for fast data transmission with minimal delays, dropouts, or interference.
- With broad game support, the Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* Requires software installation
- Dual vibration motors let you feel every hit, crash and explosion in games that support vibration feedback for a more realistic and immersive experience
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on game console controllers
There is a specific caveat: if a DirectInput game is used while the F710 remains in XInput mode, Logitech warns that the game may treat the left and right triggers as a single button and may not provide vibration feedback. That is a mode-and-game compatibility issue, not evidence that the F710 lacks vibration in general. The Xbox product information cited here documents Windows compatibility but does not describe a selectable DirectInput mode, so the F710 is the clearer pick when that switch matters. Layout and features
Microsoft highlights the Xbox controller’s hybrid D-pad, textured grips on the triggers, bumpers and rear case, and dedicated Share button. Logitech identifies a four-switch D-pad on the F710. These are manufacturer-described features, not a comparative comfort test; which layout feels better is personal. Microsoft features · Logitech specifications
Rank #2
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Battery expectations
Both controllers use AA batteries. Microsoft’s “up to 40 hours” figure for the Xbox Wireless Controller comes from preproduction-unit testing, and Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with headset, accessories, use and other factors. It is not a like-for-like battery test against the F710; Logitech’s cited F710 specification lists the two AA requirement but no comparable runtime. How to choose
- Pick the Xbox Wireless Controller if you want documented Bluetooth and USB-C options, Windows 10/11 support on compatible devices, or a controller also listed for Xbox and supported Android and iOS devices. Verify your OS compatibility and bundle contents. Microsoft compatibility and cable details
- Pick the Logitech F710 if you specifically want the included USB receiver or need to switch a particular older PC game to DirectInput. Set it to XInput for new games, and check the manual’s DirectInput-in-XInput warning if triggers or vibration behave unexpectedly. F710 product page · Input-mode guidance
- Compare local prices and the exact package before deciding on value: current pricing and included cables can vary by retailer and region.
The official specifications do not settle which controller has lower latency, feels more comfortable, lasts longer in real-world use, or is better value at current prices. Those claims require comparable testing or current regional listings rather than manufacturer feature descriptions.
