His biggest test came during a run of six consecutive Carolina power plays, when he made 14 saves on 15 shots over 22 minutes and 39 seconds of playing time.
Thompson’s numbers in the opener
Thompson finished with 31 saves on 33 shots, according to the NHL game recap. Carolina scored twice: Sebastian Aho converted on the power play, and Logan Stankoven also found the net.
The 31-save total describes the full game; the especially demanding stretch came while Washington was shorthanded. The Capitals took six penalties in a row, and Thompson stopped 14 of 15 shots during 22:39 of playing time across that sequence, according to the Capitals’ recap. Aho scored Carolina’s lone goal during the run.
How Washington built the 5-2 win
Alex Tuch scored twice in his Capitals debut. Cole Hutson, Jakob Chychrun, and Ryan Leonard scored Washington’s other goals. After Aho cut into the lead on the power play, Leonard restored the Capitals’ four-goal margin just eight seconds later. Carolina’s Stankoven scored the other Hurricanes goal.

The NHL’s game recap details the scoring sequence. The final was 5-2 for Washington in Carolina.
What Thompson and Tuch said afterward
Thompson credited the penalty-killing unit and the players blocking shots during the prolonged sequence. “I wasn’t seeing much. I was trying to catch some air, but credit to the PK. We were keeping afloat, we were grinding, and that PK unit was huge tonight. I thought the guys did an amazing job. It’s not easy killing that many penalties in a row, but the guys are blocking shots,” he said in the Capitals’ postgame recap.

Tuch described Thompson as steady and well-positioned, saying he “just gives us a lot of confidence.” That was Tuch’s assessment of his teammate, reported in the same team recap.

Thompson entered the opener after a strong 2025-26 regular season. The Capitals’ September 28, 2026 opening-roster announcement listed his record at 31-21-6, with a 2.44 goals-against average, a .912 save percentage, and four shutouts in 58 games. The team also reported 29.3 goals saved above expected for that season, attributing the figure to MoneyPuck.com. Those are prior-season figures, not statistics from the Carolina game.
