localStorage is synchronous: JavaScript must wait for each storage operation to finish before continuing on that execution thread. That can delay rendering or interaction work, especially when an app repeatedly reads or writes substantial data. The mechanism is documented; the delay in a particular app depends on its workload and browser, so there is no universal latency figure to apply.
Why localStorage can make an interface feel slow
The Web Storage API provides localStorage and sessionStorage, and both are synchronous. MDN states that “Both sessionStorage and localStorage in Web Storage are synchronous in nature.” Because a call completes before JavaScript on that execution thread can proceed, storage work can hold up other work scheduled there, including UI updates. MDN Web Storage API documentation (last modified February 22, 2025) cautions that substantial data operations may affect application performance and responsiveness.

This does not mean every call produces a delay a user will notice. The size of the effect depends on the operation and the browser. The documentation gives no universal timing figure, so avoid assigning a millisecond cost without measurements from the app and browsers you support.

localStorage is origin-associated storage that persists across browser sessions. Its simple key/value model can suit small pieces of durable state, such as a user’s display preference. MDN’s localStorage property reference describes its persistence and origin association.

Consider the access pattern as well as the amount of data. A small preference read at a suitable point in the application may be an acceptable fit. Repeated synchronous access or substantial data handling is more likely to compete with other JavaScript work. Moving storage calls alone will not fix time spent parsing, rendering, or running unrelated application logic.
When to consider IndexedDB instead
For larger datasets or work where responsiveness matters, MDN identifies IndexedDB as an asynchronous alternative. It stores structured-clone-compatible values and supports indexes, making it a better fit than a string-oriented key/value store for many structured application records. MDN’s IndexedDB API documentation describes its capabilities.

IndexedDB has more API and data-model complexity than a simple key/value store. Choose it when the data shape, volume, or access pattern justifies that complexity—not as a guarantee that the application will become faster. Asynchronous storage can prevent a storage operation from synchronously holding up the calling JavaScript, but total performance still depends on the work the application performs around it.

How to find out whether storage is your bottleneck
- Reproduce the sluggish interaction. Identify the exact screen and action where responsiveness degrades, using the browsers and devices that matter to your users.
- Profile the interaction. Use your browser’s performance profiling tools to locate long-running JavaScript and determine whether storage calls are on the critical path. Do not assume storage is responsible simply because the app uses it.
- Inspect the surrounding work. Check how often the app reads or writes, the amount of data involved, and whether serialization, parsing, rendering, or other application logic consumes time.
- Change one relevant factor. For larger or performance-sensitive structured data, evaluate an asynchronous approach such as IndexedDB. Keep the data model and lifecycle complexity in view.
- Measure again on target browsers. Compare the same interaction before and after the change. Report only timings measured under stated conditions; no benchmark in the cited documentation predicts your app’s result.
