Choose the video quality and whether to include recorded timings and narration, then export. MP4 is a practical choice for sharing, but check the finished video because some media and effects may not transfer as expected.
Choose the export route for your computer

Save the presentation as a PowerPoint file.

Go to File > Export > Create a Video. Some PowerPoint versions also offer Recording > Export to Video.

Select a quality. Microsoft lists Ultra HD (4K, 3840 × 2160), Full HD (1080p, 1920 × 1080), HD (720p, 1280 × 720), and Standard (480p, 852 × 480). Higher resolution produces a larger file. Microsoft recommends Full HD (1080p) for most uses in its PowerPoint video-export guide.

Choose whether to use recorded timings and narration. If no timings are recorded, PowerPoint uses five seconds per slide by default; you can change the duration.

Select Create Video, choose a filename and destination, and save as MPEG-4 Video (.mp4) or Windows Media Video (.wmv). Wait for PowerPoint’s progress indicator to show that export has finished.
Microsoft recommends MPEG-4 Video for compatibility with video players in its training guide. The available formats and labels can vary by PowerPoint version.
Mac

Open File > Export and choose MP4 or MOV if either format is offered. Select quality and timing options, then export. Microsoft specifically directs Mac users to Export rather than Save As for movie export.

If movie-format choices are missing, check your PowerPoint version and licensing. Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 for Mac version 15.23 and later, with recorded narration in exported video starting in version 16.19, and PowerPoint 2019 for Mac version 16.19 and later. Set timing and narration before exporting
Exporting makes the video file; recording narration and slide timings is a separate step that stores the recorded content in the presentation. If you want narration or slide-specific pacing, record those before exporting. Microsoft’s recording guidance says the newer recording export flow defaults to Full HD 1080p MP4 and includes recorded timings, narration, animations, transitions, media, ink, and laser-pointer gestures; features can differ by version and rollout. Slides without recorded timing appear for five seconds by default in that flow.
When recording, pause during slide transitions: narration is not recorded while the transition runs. Preview the recording before exporting. An external microphone is optional; PowerPoint can record using one if you need it.

Balance resolution, file size, and playback
For a typical video shared online or played on a computer, Full HD (1080p) is a reasonable starting point. Choose 4K when the intended display benefits from the extra resolution and the larger file is acceptable; choose 720p or 480p when reducing file size matters more. These are Microsoft-listed export resolutions, not guarantees of a particular final file size, which also depends on presentation content and export settings.
MP4 is a practical default for broad playback compatibility. Windows export also offers WMV, while Mac may offer MP4 or MOV depending on version and licensing. A video file can be watched without PowerPoint installed, but the viewer still needs a player and device that support the resulting file and its media.

Older linked media is missing on Windows: Media inserted in older PowerPoint versions may be linked instead of embedded and can be dropped during export. Convert or upgrade it so it is embedded, then export again.

QuickTime media or interactive controls do not appear on Windows: Microsoft lists QuickTime media as excluded except under specified third-party codec and compatibility conditions. Macros and OLE/ActiveX controls are not included in the created video.

Animations or embedded media behave differently on Mac: Microsoft says recorded slide-show narration plays in the exported video, but other embedded media files will not. Some transitions behave differently, and animation effects do not play. Review the exported movie rather than assuming the slide show will be reproduced exactly.

Export takes a long time: On Windows, duration depends on presentation length and complexity. Long decks, animations, transitions, and media can extend export time; allow PowerPoint to finish processing.

Inserted video or audio does not play reliably: For media inserted into a presentation, Microsoft recommends MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. This recommendation concerns media inside the deck; it does not establish that every exported PowerPoint video uses those codecs.
Before sharing, play the finished file from beginning to end and check narration, slide timing, transitions, animation, and any embedded video or audio. This catches export differences in the actual file recipients will watch.
