Local vs. Cloud Sandboxes for AI Coding Assistants: How to Choose

Local execution keeps an AI coding agent on your machine; cloud execution moves it to a provider-hosted environment. Compare the real boundaries—files, network, credentials, enforcement, and workflow—before choosing.

A local sandbox runs an AI coding assistant’s commands on your computer under operating-system restrictions; a cloud sandbox runs them in a provider-hosted environment separated from your computer. Neither option is automatically safer: the practical boundary depends on filesystem access, network rules, credentials, supported operating systems, and whether restrictions are actually enforced. Choose based on where code may run and what it needs to reach—not on the word “sandbox” alone.

What is the difference between a local and cloud sandbox?

Factor Local sandbox Cloud sandbox What to check
Where commands run On the developer’s machine, within operating-system or process controls. In an isolated environment hosted by the provider. Whether terminal commands, built-in tools, subprocesses, and MCP or language-server processes are all covered.
Files Typically the workspace and any explicitly granted paths, subject to the product and OS. A remote session workspace. GitHub says its cloud sessions are isolated from the user’s local environment and from one another. Writable, read-only, and denied paths; symlink and mount handling; and what happens if enforcement is unsupported.
Network Internet, local-network, loopback, proxies, and package registries may have separate controls and platform-specific limits. Provider or project policy may block internet access by default or allow selected destinations. Outbound destinations, local-network access, redirects, proxy coverage, and whether dependencies can be installed.
Credentials Local Git, CLI, keychain, and environment credentials may be accessible unless excluded. Credentials may be brokered or kept outside the runtime, depending on implementation. Which tokens are mounted or brokered, their permissions and scope, and how they are rotated and logged.
Workflow Can work directly with local files and services, using local compute. Can offload execution and may support remote access or resumption, depending on the service. Dependency setup, private resources, latency, session persistence, and what repository context is transferred.
Governance and cost May be included with a product seat. May require administrator enablement and usage-based billing. Current policy controls, availability status, and the provider’s current billing terms.

These are architectural categories, not security grades. For example, GitHub describes its local sandbox as OS-level process and filesystem containment rather than a separate VM or container. Its cloud sandbox is a hosted, ephemeral Linux environment built on Azure Container Apps Sandboxes. Those descriptions apply to GitHub’s documented products, not every tool that uses the same labels. Is a cloud sandbox safer than running an AI coding agent on your computer?

Not by default. Cloud execution separates the agent’s commands from your local machine, which can reduce direct exposure of local files and services. But it shifts trust to the provider-hosted environment and its configuration: code and context must be sent there, and you still need to assess network policy, credential handling, retention, tenant isolation, and access controls.

A local sandbox keeps execution on your machine and can make local development resources easier to reach. Its protection depends on the operating system and product implementation, including whether every relevant process is constrained and what happens when a requested restriction cannot be enforced. GitHub documents, for example, a Linux limitation involving local-network restrictions for spawned processes; on Windows, a command fails if a requested denial policy is unsupported rather than running with the denied path available. Why filesystem and network rules need to work together

A filesystem boundary limits what an agent can read or change; a network boundary limits where it can send information or obtain code and instructions. Either control alone leaves important paths open. Anthropic puts it plainly: “It is worth noting that effective sandboxing requires both filesystem and network isolation.” Its Claude Code engineering article describes local sandboxing that restricts writes outside the working directory and routes internet access through a proxy enforcing domain rules. Network access can be useful for package installation or APIs, but broad access increases exposure to malicious or compromised destinations and can create routes for sensitive data to leave the environment. OpenAI’s Codex safety documentation warns that enabling internet access can introduce prompt-injection, credential-leakage, and code-license risks. The document describes a configuration with network access disabled by default and writes restricted to the current workspace; do not assume every Codex surface or account has identical settings. Credentials are a separate security boundary

A sandbox’s file and network rules do not by themselves answer which credentials the agent or its child processes can use. Check for Git and GitHub CLI authentication, environment variables, API keys, cloud credentials, signing keys, keychain access, and credentials exposed through MCP tools or proxies. Prefer short-lived, narrowly scoped access over broad credentials available to the runtime.

Product designs differ. GitHub says Git and GitHub CLI credentials are available by default inside the Copilot app’s local sandbox, with an option to disable Git credentials. Anthropic describes Claude Code on the web as keeping sensitive credentials such as Git credentials and signing keys outside the sandbox and routing Git operations through a proxy that validates a scoped credential. OpenAI’s self-hosted environment guidance tells operators to keep the application API key outside the sandbox. These are product-specific design descriptions, not interchangeable guarantees. When a local sandbox is a better fit

  • You need the agent to work with local development services, files, or tools that are not available remotely.
  • You want execution and compute to remain on your machine rather than sending a session to a hosted environment.
  • Your operating system and chosen product can enforce the filesystem and network restrictions you require.

Before relying on a local setup, confirm the exact OS support and policy behavior. “Local” does not necessarily mean that all processes are isolated, that credentials are hidden, or that network access is blocked.

When a cloud sandbox is a better fit

  • You want agent work separated from the developer’s computer and local environment.
  • You want execution offloaded from local compute or need to access a session remotely.
  • Your team can review what repository content and context go to the provider, how the environment handles credentials and network access, and what session data persists.

Cloud environments can be useful when work should continue independently of a developer’s workstation. OpenAI says Codex Cloud tasks run on OpenAI-managed computers using reusable cloud environments and can continue while the user’s computer is asleep; workspace settings control cloud access, which the help page says is off by default for Enterprise workspaces that have not enabled it. How to evaluate a sandbox before enabling it

  1. Map the execution scope. Identify which commands, subprocesses, built-in tools, MCP integrations, and language servers run inside the boundary—and which can run outside it.
  2. Set the file boundary. Grant only the project paths the agent needs. Determine what it can read, write, or not access, including symlinks and mounted paths.
  3. Set the network boundary. Start with network access off where practical, then allow only necessary destinations. Verify local-network access, proxies, redirects, and package downloads separately.
  4. Inventory credentials. Find out what tokens and authentication sources the agent and subprocesses can use. Remove broad or long-lived credentials where possible and use scoped access.
  5. Test enforcement and failure behavior. Check supported operating systems, documented limitations, and whether a denied or unsupported policy fails closed or allows a command to proceed.
  6. Review governance and session lifecycle. Confirm who can enable the feature, what policies administrators can manage, whether state persists after stopping a session, and how deletion works.
  7. Keep approval and review controls in place. A sandbox constrains execution; it does not replace human review of consequential changes or a suitable approval policy.

OpenAI distinguishes the sandbox’s technical execution boundary from approval policy, which determines when Codex must ask before taking an action outside that boundary. Its article also describes managed requirements, local configuration, credential storage, and audit logging as enterprise controls. Microsoft similarly documents workspace scope, approval settings, diff review, separate Git worktrees, remote cloud sessions, and OS-level terminal sandboxing for VS Code agent sessions. Microsoft labels terminal sandboxing Preview on macOS, Linux, and WSL2, and Experimental on Windows; it advises using sandboxing or a dev container for prompt-injection concerns rather than relying only on auto-approval rules, and notes best-effort command-parsing limitations. GitHub Copilot example: defaults and session behavior

GitHub’s Copilot CLI and GitHub Copilot app do not share local sandbox settings. GitHub labels CLI local sandboxing Experimental and the app’s local sandboxing Public preview. In the app, local sandboxing is off by default. When enabled, the documented defaults allow read/write access to the workspace and current working directory, outbound internet and local-network connections, and authenticated Git and GitHub CLI operations. Users can grant additional read-only or read/write paths, deny paths, change internet and local-network access, and disable Git credentials. Changes apply to new or restarted sessions, not a session already running. GitHub’s local and cloud sandbox overview; GitHub’s app configuration instructions

GitHub says its cloud sandbox requires organization access to be enabled and offers active, stopped-with-saved-state, and deleted states; deletion removes the session state. The documentation says local sandboxing is included in a standard Copilot seat and cloud sandboxing is billed by usage. Check GitHub’s current billing documentation before relying on a price, since rates can change. GitHub’s sandbox overview

What a sandbox does not guarantee

  • It does not establish that the model’s output is safe, correct, or free of malicious instructions.
  • It does not prove that credentials are unavailable; credential access depends on product design and configuration.
  • It does not replace code review, appropriate approval rules, or organizational controls.
  • It does not make local and cloud implementations directly comparable without checking their enforcement mechanisms and limits.
