To choose a phone that is likely to last, compare the exact model’s remaining software-support period, practical repair options, and current local purchase and repair costs. Brand reputation or a repairability score alone cannot tell you what ownership will cost or whether a phone suits your needs.
Compare the exact models you might buy
Use the same ownership period and your own market when comparing phones. Check official support terms, available repair routes, and dated local prices rather than relying on a brand-wide promise or a single score.

How much software support will remain when you buy?
Look up the exact model on its maker’s official support page. Check when the support clock starts, when it ends, and which updates are included. Google’s current policy, accessed in 2026, says Pixel 8 and later phones receive seven years of OS and security updates from first availability on the Google Store in the United States. Google lists five years for Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 family devices. Those terms do not apply to every phone from Google or to other brands. Support time is not necessarily the same as time remaining at the point of sale. If you are considering an older discounted model, compare its first-availability date or published end date with today and with the period you plan to keep the phone. A headline promise of several years can leave a shorter window for a later buyer.

What does repairability mean in practice?
Repairability is more than whether a phone can be opened. Before choosing, check whether the parts you may need are sold, whether repair instructions are available, and whether authorized or independent service is accessible in your area. Consider how involved the repair is, not just whether it is theoretically possible.
iFixit says its smartphone scores are based on teardown assessments and that its scoring rubric changes. It also notes that parts and instructions differ by manufacturer. Treat scores as a comparison aid, preferably between devices assessed under a contemporary rubric, rather than as a verdict on value. A score does not establish repair prices, local parts availability, warranty outcomes, or whether the phone is right for you. When is a repairability-first phone worth considering?
Fairphone’s Gen. 6 is one example for buyers who place particular weight on repairability. Fairphone states that the phone will receive software support through 2033 and advertises a five-year warranty; terms and availability may vary by market. The company says iFixit awarded the model its repairability score in 2025. These manufacturer statements make it a relevant option to investigate, not proof that it is the best choice for every buyer or the lowest-cost phone to own.

Fairphone’s product page also describes an “average industry costs” comparison based on repair prices published on EU websites by three manufacturers between 28 and 31 July 2025. That is Fairphone’s stated methodology, not an independent, current price benchmark for every market. Check Fairphone’s Gen. 6 product page for its claims, then verify price, availability, compatibility, and service options where you live.

There is no verified, region-matched current price comparison here that establishes which of these phones costs least overall. To make your own useful comparison, record the phone price and likely repair quotes in your market, with the date and currency. Then compare those costs over the number of years you actually expect to use the phone, taking its remaining update support into account.

A single “cost per year” figure can hide important assumptions. If you calculate one, state the model and configuration, market, date, ownership period, and repair assumptions. Do not treat a repairability score or a manufacturer’s comparison as a substitute for local prices and service availability.

- Get local prices. Note the current purchase price and dated repair quotes in your market and currency.
- Match the phone to your plan. Check regional and carrier compatibility and compare the supported time with how long you expect to keep it.
