You can keep watching local TV news through an antenna, a cable or satellite package, a live-TV streaming service, or a station’s own website or app. Which one works depends on your address. Antenna reception depends on your location and surroundings. Pay-TV and streaming lineups depend on your market and provider. Start by checking what is actually available where you live, then compare cost and convenience.
The options at a glance
| Option | Typical cost shape | What to verify | Main constraint |
|---|---|---|---|
| Over-the-air antenna | Equipment purchase; no pay-TV subscription needed for reception | FCC signal estimate and the stations you want | Location, buildings, terrain, antenna placement |
| Cable or satellite | Recurring pay-TV package | Whether the provider carries your local stations in your market | Package cost and provider lineup |
| Live-TV streaming | Recurring subscription plus internet access | Local affiliate lineup for your area | Internet dependence, market-specific availability |
| Station website or app | Often direct online access; terms vary by station | Whether there is a live stream, a schedule, and current local content | Station-specific availability |
| Free ad-supported (FAST) news channel | Usually ad-supported | Whether the channel is local or national | Generic news is not necessarily local affiliate coverage |
Current service prices vary by offer and location, so this article doesn’t rank the options by price. Check live offers for your address before deciding.

Broadcast over the air
An antenna can pick up the local broadcast stations available to you with no cable, satellite or streaming subscription. The catch is reception, which varies from home to home.

The FCC’s Digital TV Reception Maps show predicted signals at a specific location. Its calculations assume an outdoor antenna 30 feet above ground, and the FCC warns that indoor reception may vary significantly. Building construction, neighboring buildings and trees, weather, reception hardware and hilly terrain all affect real signal strength.

The FCC also describes its public contour maps as general indications. Being inside a contour does not guarantee reception at every point. Treat the map as an estimate, not a promise about your channel list.
Who it suits
An antenna fits viewers who mainly want local stations and want to avoid a recurring TV bill. It is a poor fit if the map shows weak or marginal signals for the stations you care about. No single antenna model is suitable everywhere. If reception is weak, try different placement and use the FCC’s reception guidance as a starting point.
Cable and satellite
Cable and satellite are pay-TV routes that may include local affiliates. Don’t assume every system carries the same stations. For local-news viewers, the real questions are whether your specific local stations are carried and whether the wider package is worth its recurring cost.

Pew Research Center’s survey (August 2025, published November 20, 2025) found that 57% of U.S. adults who get news from television said it mostly comes from cable, satellite or broadcast TV, and 34% said mostly from streaming services. Those are self-reported access categories. They don’t rank providers or show current local availability.
Live-TV streaming
Live-TV streaming services can carry local network affiliates over the internet, but lineups vary by area. Hulu is one example. Its channel guide describes local ABC, NBC and CBS channels through Hulu + Live TV and tells customers to check their area. Its live news page says local news is available in many cities. That makes Hulu an example of the category, not a recommendation, and not a sign that every viewer gets every network.
Before subscribing to any service, enter your ZIP code or address to see the local lineup. Also check whether local news is live, on demand or both, and whether your internet connection can handle it reliably.

Station websites and apps
Local stations publish news on their own websites and apps, and through email and social media. Pew’s chart on how U.S. adults access local TV news groups these under “NET Online.” Whether a station offers a live stream, and on which apps, differs by station. Check the station’s own site for its stream and schedule.

Station app viewing is growing. Nielsen reported that an average of 61,000 people aged 2 and older tuned to local stations through OTT apps in August 2025, up 69% from August 2024. That is an audience measure. It doesn’t mean every market has an app or that any particular service carries a given station.
Free ad-supported streaming channels
FAST platforms may offer news programming, but there’s no established basis for assuming a given platform carries your local affiliate or its full newscasts. Many are national or generic. Treat them as a supplement and confirm what’s local before relying on one.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Enter your address in the FCC reception map and note which stations are predicted to reach you.
- If the stations you want look reachable, an antenna is the lowest-recurring-cost test. Place it carefully, since indoor results vary.
- If reception is poor, or you want other channels as well, check local lineups for cable, satellite and streaming services by address.
- Compare the real local channels, total recurring cost, internet dependence, live versus on-demand access and reliability. These matter more than channel counts.
- Add the stations’ own sites and apps as a free backup for newscasts and alerts.
