What does an inference runtime do?
An inference runtime loads a trained model and generates responses to prompts. It determines how the model uses your CPU, GPU and memory, and may also provide an API for applications to send requests. Some tools prioritize an approachable local workflow; others expose controls for serving many requests or distributing work across accelerators.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese categories overlap. A tool aimed at serving can still be run on a single machine, and a local-first workflow can expose an API. The useful distinction is the amount of setup and serving control you need.

How do the four tools differ?
| Runtime | Documented focus | Best starting point when… | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| llama.cpp | C/C++ inference; CPU and multiple accelerator backends; quantization from 1.5-bit through 8-bit; hybrid CPU/GPU inference; CLI and an OpenAI-compatible server. | You want hardware options, quantized GGUF workflows, offload controls or a command-line/server setup. | Backend availability does not mean identical performance or feature parity on every device. |
| Ollama | Downloading and running models, a model library, app and coding-agent integrations, and an API with compatible clients. Its documentation also describes cloud models. | You want a direct model-running workflow and a convenient way to connect applications. | Check whether the model and workflow you choose are local or cloud-hosted. |
| vLLM | High-throughput serving, continuous batching, KV memory management with PagedAttention, quantization options, several forms of parallelism, and compatible APIs. | You need to serve concurrent requests or explore batching, parallel execution and production-style APIs. | Its current GPU installation guide requires Linux and Python 3.10–3.13; Windows is not natively supported. Apple Silicon is documented through vLLM-Metal, a community-maintained plugin. |
| SGLang | Serving language and multimodal models, with features including RadixAttention and prefix caching, plus support for a single GPU through distributed clusters and compatible APIs. | You want serving and caching features that fit your application and deployment scale. | Its low-latency and high-throughput language is project positioning, not a guarantee for your workload. |
Which runtime should you try first?
Choose Ollama for a simple run-and-connect workflow
Start here if your goal is to obtain a model, run it on a computer and connect it to a desktop application or coding agent without building much serving infrastructure. Ollama documents both local and cloud model workflows, so verify which mode applies to the model you select.
Choose llama.cpp for hardware flexibility and quantized-model control
Try llama.cpp if you want to work with GGUF models, adjust how computation is split between CPU and GPU, or use one of its documented hardware paths. Its project documentation lists CPU, Apple Silicon, NVIDIA CUDA, AMD HIP, Vulkan, SYCL and other backends, as well as a CLI and server option. Support for a backend is not a promise that every model or feature works the same way on it.

Evaluate vLLM for concurrent or distributed serving
vLLM is a stronger candidate when multiple requests, batching, KV-cache management or parallel execution are central to the job. First confirm that your operating system, Python version and accelerator path match its installation documentation. On Apple Silicon, the documented route uses a community-maintained plugin rather than native support in vLLM.

Evaluate SGLang when its serving features match the application
SGLang documents prefix caching, RadixAttention, structured serving workflows and deployments ranging from one GPU to distributed clusters. Those features may matter for repeated prefixes or larger deployments, but the actual benefit depends on your model and traffic pattern. Benchmark it with the intended application rather than selecting it from project performance claims alone.

What hardware and operating-system checks matter?
Check compatibility before choosing a runtime or buying hardware. The projects document different accelerator and operating-system paths: llama.cpp lists a range of backends, while vLLM’s GPU installation guidance is Linux-focused and sets specific Python requirements. SGLang also lists broad hardware support, but the relevant combination is the exact device, model and software stack you plan to use.
- Confirm that the runtime supports your operating system and accelerator architecture.
- Check the software prerequisites and supported backend for the exact device; a general hardware list does not establish that every feature is available on every backend.
- Identify the model format and quantization you intend to run, then confirm the runtime can use them.
- Estimate memory for both model weights and runtime needs such as the KV cache. Context length and concurrent requests affect memory use.
- Check system RAM, storage, power, cooling and physical fit alongside accelerator memory.
Parameter count alone cannot establish a reliable memory requirement. Quantization can reduce weight memory, while longer context and more concurrent work can increase KV-cache demand. There is no universal VRAM minimum in these projects’ documentation that applies across models, quantizations, context sizes and runtimes.

How should you compare speed?
The project documentation describes features and intended use, not a controlled, cross-runtime speed test. Treat claims such as “high throughput” as positioning until you measure the workload you care about. A fair comparison holds the key conditions constant:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use the same model revision, precision or quantization, prompt, output length and context size.
- Run on the same hardware with comparable power settings and software configuration.
- Compare both single-request behavior and the concurrency level you expect in practice.
- Record time to first token, generation throughput, aggregate throughput under concurrency, peak memory, startup and model-load time, and failures.
- Report runtime versions and the test date; results can change with software updates and configuration.
Without those controls, a speed figure can reflect a different model, context, device or request pattern rather than an inherent runtime advantage.

What does API compatibility mean for an application?
llama.cpp, vLLM and SGLang document OpenAI-compatible APIs; Ollama documents its own API and compatible client paths. Compatibility can make an existing application easier to connect, but it does not prove that every endpoint, parameter or model behavior is identical. Verify that the runtime supports the specific API features your application uses, then test the actual model and request flow.
When should you consider another tool?
The useful shortlist depends on your model format and deployment platform. This comparison focuses on llama.cpp, Ollama, vLLM and SGLang; it is not a complete survey of alternatives such as LM Studio, MLX, TensorRT-LLM or Hugging Face Transformers. Consider another runtime when your required device, model format or workflow is not well served by these four, and verify its current documentation before committing.
What should you check before buying a GPU?
Choose the target model and workload first, then confirm that the runtime supports the GPU and its software stack. A “GPU for local LLM inference” is a product category, not a universal recommendation: the right choice depends on model memory, accelerator compatibility, total system fit and measured performance for your use case.
- Target model, model format and quantization.
- Context length and expected number of concurrent users or requests.
- VRAM for weights and KV cache, plus system RAM and storage.
- Accelerator architecture, operating system and runtime support.
- Power requirements, cooling, physical dimensions and total system compatibility.
- Current price and workload-specific test results.
Do not assume a RAM or storage upgrade will solve a GPU-memory or compatibility bottleneck. Check the exact model and runtime requirements before purchase.
