A local AI writing assistant is more than a model running on your computer. The model generates text; the surrounding software has to bring in the right context, preserve useful state, connect to an editor, manage tool calls and failures, and make clear where data travels. That integration work is often the harder engineering problem—but the available documentation supports this as a practical observation, not a measured rule about every project.
What makes a writing assistant different from a model demo?
A model demo can accept a prompt and return text. A useful writing assistant must fit into a drafting loop: select text or a document, provide relevant context, request a change, show the result, and let the writer decide whether to apply it. It also needs to handle interrupted generations, oversized tool results, and the persistence of conversation or memory.

Those responsibilities are not all model capabilities. They belong to the runtime and application around the model, and their design affects whether the assistant feels useful, predictable, and appropriately bounded.

Context and state
The application must decide what the model sees: the current selection, surrounding paragraphs, style guidance, prior messages, or retrieved material. Sending everything can waste context and obscure the immediate task; sending too little can produce edits that ignore the document.

State also needs a home. Atomic Agent documents an approach that stores history, memory, browser snapshots, and tasks in SQLite, then sends a compact slice of context to the model. It also compresses verbose tool output. This is an example from one project, not a universal prescription. Its architecture page identifies the implementation as Developer Preview v0.6.5, so treat those details as version-specific: Atomic Agent architecture documentation.
Tools and the execution loop
When an assistant can search, retrieve information, or perform actions, the model is only one participant in a loop. The model proposes a tool call; the runtime executes it, returns a result, and may ask the model to continue. The runtime must decide which tools are available, validate inputs, handle errors, and keep results within useful context limits.

LocalAI describes agents that use actions, retrieval, skills, and streaming, with agents running in-process. Its documentation presents this as functionality of the LocalAI runtime, not as a requirement for every writing assistant: LocalAI agents documentation. Before connecting tools, decide whether they can only read, or can also modify files or contact external services.

A writing workflow needs a deliberate path between editor and assistant. Dictation, a request to revise selected text, and a request to work across a whole document are different interactions: each needs a clear input boundary and a sensible way to return or apply the result.

Vellum’s architecture document illustrates this distinction by separating dictation from selected-text editing and routing production LLM calls through a provider abstraction. That is one project’s design, not a general standard: Vellum architecture document.
Streaming, errors, and recovery
Streaming can show a response as it is generated, but the application still has to represent a stopped or failed generation and prevent partial text from being mistaken for a completed edit. A safe editing flow keeps the original available and makes applying a revision an explicit step rather than silently replacing a writer’s work.

What do different local-assistant architectures illustrate?
These examples solve different product problems. They are useful for identifying design choices, not for ranking development effort, performance, or writing quality; the cited documentation does not provide controlled comparisons on those measures.

Does self-hosted mean every request stays local?
No. “Self-hosted” describes where parts of the application run; it does not, by itself, establish where inference happens or where every piece of content goes. TinyMCE says its on-premises system keeps document content, conversation history, attachments, and user data within the host network and does not store them at Tiny. Its documentation also qualifies that statement: data sent to a configured LLM provider is subject to that provider’s data-handling policies. See the TinyMCE on-premises documentation.

Map the actual data flow before choosing an architecture. Identify what leaves the editor, what the application stores, whether inference is local or provider-hosted, and what tools can send data elsewhere. A local runtime may give an operator control over where it is deployed, but privacy depends on the complete path and configuration.
How should you choose an architecture?
Start with the writing interaction and the boundaries it needs, then select components that meet those requirements. The documentation supports several patterns, but it does not establish a universal winner or an objective measure of ease.
- Inference location: Establish whether the model runs on the same machine, on infrastructure you operate, or through a configured provider.
- Editor workflow: Define how the assistant receives selected text or document context and how a writer reviews, inserts, or rejects the result.
- State: Decide what conversation history, memory, and task information must persist, and where it is stored.
- Tool permissions: List which tools can read, change, or transmit data; give them only the access the workflow needs.
- Operations: Account for the runtime and any required application services, databases, caches, or file storage. TinyMCE’s documented on-premises arrangement, for example, includes a browser editor, token endpoint, AI service, database, Redis, and file storage. TinyMCE on-premises documentation
- Provider dependence: Identify which behavior depends on a particular model or provider and whether the application can route requests through an abstraction.
What can the documentation establish about hardware?
LocalAI describes a target range from CPU laptops to distributed GPU clusters, but the cited material gives no minimum specifications or controlled comparison of models and hardware. That range is not enough to recommend a particular GPU or predict performance for a specific writing workload. Check requirements for the exact runtime, model, and workload you plan to use rather than treating “local AI” as one fixed hardware profile: LocalAI documentation.
Why the model still matters—but cannot solve the whole problem
Model choice affects the text the system can generate, but it does not decide which document context is supplied, whether a revision is safely applied, how state persists, or which network boundary a request crosses. Those are application and deployment decisions. The cited project documentation describes concrete ways to address them; it does not quantify which is hardest or show that one architecture is easiest to build.
