Remove Monitor Speakers: Turn Off Audio or Remove the Hardware?

“Remove monitor speakers” can mean two different things: stop your computer from sending sound to the monitor, or physically take the speakers out. If you only want silence, change the computer’s audio output and check the monitor’s mute and volume settings. You usually do not need to open anything. Physical removal is a model-specific repair, not a universal monitor procedure.

Choose the right approach

What you want What to do Reversibility and effort
Stop sound coming from the monitor Select a different playback device in your computer’s sound settings; check the monitor’s mute and volume controls. Quick and easy to reverse. Menu names vary by Windows version and monitor model.
Remove the built-in speakers physically Find the official service procedure for the exact make and model before opening the device. Requires model-specific disassembly and may involve substantial teardown.

How to stop audio from coming through the monitor

Choose another output in Windows

  1. Open the taskbar sound control and select the playback output you want, such as headphones or another speaker. If needed, open Settings > System > Sound and choose the output device there. Microsoft documents selecting an audio output device in Windows: Fix sound or audio problems in Windows.
  2. Play audio and confirm it comes from the selected device. Windows labels and available controls can differ by version.
  3. If the monitor still makes sound, use its on-screen display controls to check mute and volume. LG Support recommends checking these controls as part of monitor sound troubleshooting: LG Monitor: How to Fix No Sound Issues.

Changing the selected output is the first step when you want silence; do not open the monitor or rely on disabling a device in Device Manager as a universal fix.

Check the connection if audio is missing or routed unexpectedly

The cable can determine whether sound is available to the monitor. MSI says HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB-C with DisplayPort Alternate Mode can carry audio; VGA and DVI do not. With VGA or DVI, monitor speakers need a separate audio connection if the monitor supports one. See MSI’s monitor audio troubleshooting guidance.

Also distinguish audio input from audio output. An audio-in port accepts sound from a connected source; a headphone or line-out jack sends sound out. Connecting a cable to an input does not make it an output.

What physical speaker removal involves

There is no safe, general set of steps for removing speakers from an unspecified monitor. Case fasteners, cable routing, speaker connections, and disassembly order vary by product. Identify the exact make and model, then locate its official service manual or service guide. Follow only the procedure written for that device.

Why the exact model matters

Manufacturer service procedures illustrate how different device designs can be. Dell’s OptiPlex 7780 All-In-One speaker procedure requires removing the stand, back cover, system-board shield, bottom cover, and rear I/O bracket before accessing the speakers. The procedure then specifies disconnecting the speaker cable, removing nine screws, releasing the cable from its routing guides, and lifting out the speakers with their cable. Those instructions apply to that all-in-one, not to standalone monitors.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 9 component disassembly and reassembly guide is another example of model-specific service work: it calls for powering off and disconnecting the power supply, lists disassembly prerequisites, and specifies a 3IP Torx-plus driver for the speaker procedure. A Surface Pro is not a monitor, and its steps are not transferable. HP’s computer service documentation likewise gives shutdown, power-disconnection, and model-specific speaker-removal instructions for the computer models it covers: HP Computer Maintenance and Service Guide.

Before opening a device

  • Confirm the full model name and product type; a similar-looking model may have a different internal layout.
  • Read the manufacturer’s complete service procedure, including its prerequisites and named tools. Do not assume a general electronics toolkit contains the correct bit.
  • Consider the risk of damage and check the manufacturer’s terms for warranty and service options for your exact product. Opening a device can affect your service options; the outcome depends on the applicable terms and circumstances.
  • If there is no manufacturer procedure for your model, or you are unsure about a step, leave the device closed and consult a qualified repairer.

If your goal is simply to change where sound plays, use the computer’s output selector and the monitor controls instead of attempting a hardware repair.

Other ways to change your audio setup

If you want audio away from the monitor, select separate speakers or headphones as the computer’s output device. This changes the playback destination without requiring speaker removal. If you want the monitor itself to remain silent, use its mute control if available or keep a different output selected.
