The interface, model server, downloaded model files, connection settings, and saved application data are separate parts; one can disappear or stop working while the others remain intact. First identify which workbench and server you use, how they were installed, what is missing, and what changed just before the problem.
Pin down what disappeared before changing anything
Write down the exact symptom and the setup it belongs to. This prevents a fix for one component from damaging another.

- Workbench or interface: Is the app or web page unavailable, or can you open it?
- Model list: Is the list empty, or is one particular model absent?
- Loaded model: Does the model still appear but fail to load or respond?
- Chats and settings: Are conversations, users, or preferences missing?
- Connection: Does the interface report that a local server cannot be reached?
Before following any commands, establish the workbench name, operating system, installation method (such as Docker, Python, or a desktop app), model server, and the change immediately before the issue—an update, restart, reinstall, configuration edit, or moved data directory. Steps for one installation method may not apply to another.
Protect saved data before attempting a reset
Use the workbench’s backup procedure for your specific installation before removing application data, changing volumes, or reinstalling. A reset can affect persistent data even when model files are stored separately.
#1 Best Overall
- High-Performance AI Processor:The MS-02 Ultra features an Intel Core Ultra 9 285HX (24C/24T, up to 5.5 GHz, 13 TOPS NPU), delivering fast and efficient performance for AI inference, algorithm development, and media workloads. A PCIe x16 expansion slot supports desktop-class GPU upgrades for advanced model training and accelerated computing tasks. It's ideal for creators, engineers, and teams handling intensive parallel workloads.
- 4 × M.2 PCIe 4.0 + 4 × DDR5 SODIMM slots:Four DDR5 SODIMM slots support up to 256 GB of memory, while ECC helps maintain data integrity in mission-critical environments. Four PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots support up to 24 TB of storage, supporting RAID 0/1/5/10, combining high-speed performance with data protection. It allows for the creation of independent scratch disks, media libraries, and project drives, providing high-throughput for production workflows.
- PCIe & USB 4.0 v2: Up to three PCIe slots can be equipped, including a dual-slot x16 GPU. The main slot supports PCIe 5.0, meeting the needs of high-bandwidth creative and computing workloads. USB 4.0 v2 (80Gbps) supports high-bandwidth external storage and displays.
- Ultra-fast Networking: Wi-Fi 7 further enhances wireless performance with next-generation speeds and low-latency stability. Intelligent bandwidth switching optimizes throughput in different network environments, ensuring optimal performance for enterprise or local networks. Dual 25GbE ports (providing up to approximately 3.125 GB/s bandwidth, about 25 times faster than traditional 1GbE), enabling seamless large-scale file transfers and parallel computing. 10GbE and 2.5GbE ports, with support for Intel vPro technology, ensure enterprise-grade remote management and deployment flexibility.
- Server-grade thermal architecture: Utilizing a dedicated CPU/GPU airflow design, equipped with a 6-pipe dual-fan cooler, it maintains stable performance even under sustained loads, delivering up to 140W Turbo power while maintaining a 100W TDP, and operating with noise levels as low as 36 dB. An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.
Open WebUI installed with Docker
In Open WebUI’s documented Docker setup, a persistent volume is mounted at /app/backend/data. That volume contains chats, users, and settings. Removing the container and removing that volume are different actions: the Open WebUI uninstall instructions describe volume removal as optional and warn that removing it deletes all data. Follow the project’s backup and restore guidance before changing the volume: Open WebUI Quick Start.
Before recreating a Docker deployment, check which image or release you are using and whether its WEBUI_SECRET_KEY is persistent. Open WebUI warns that an unstable secret key can log users out when a container is recreated. Its documentation also cautions against sharing a data volume between development and production builds because migrations can prevent rollback. These details concern the documented Open WebUI setup; they are not a universal recipe for other workbenches or installation methods.
Check the server and connection before looking for deleted models
An empty model list does not by itself prove that model files were deleted. The interface may be unable to reach its server, or the configured endpoint may be wrong. Check that the expected server is running, then verify the endpoint configured in the workbench. Only after connectivity is established should you investigate whether the model itself is missing.

LM Studio connected to Open WebUI
Open WebUI documents http://localhost:1234/v1 as LM Studio’s local endpoint in its OpenAI-compatible provider guide. Treat it as an example for that connection, not a universal address: Open WebUI’s OpenAI-compatible provider guide. The guide also describes model-management actions being proxied to the connected server, so a broken connection can affect what the interface shows or can manage.
For Docker installations, do not assume that localhost inside the workbench container means the host computer. Use the host-connection guidance for your actual container setup in the Open WebUI Quick Start; copying a desktop endpoint blindly may not connect the container to the server.

Ollama connected to a workbench
Ollama’s FAQ says its default local bind address is 127.0.0.1 on port 11434, and that OLLAMA_HOST changes the bind address. Check the configured address against how Ollama is running and how the workbench reaches it; do not apply these values to a different server or assume they are correct for every network or container arrangement. See the Ollama FAQ.
Choose recovery by the component it changes
Start with the least disruptive action that addresses the identified failure. Before using an option that changes persistent data, confirm that the backup exists and that the procedure matches your installation method.

|---|---|---|---|
| Verify server status and endpoint | Connection or server configuration | Does not require removing persistent data | The interface opens but cannot reach a local server or shows no models. |
| Restart the relevant server or interface | Running process or service | No data removal is inherent to a restart; check the specific app and deployment | A service appears stopped or unresponsive. Restart the component implicated by the symptom rather than resetting the whole setup. |
| Recreate or reinstall an interface | Workbench application or deployment | Depends on whether its data directory, volume, or configuration is retained | The interface itself is broken and its persistent data has been backed up or otherwise protected. |
| Remove a persistent data volume or directory | Application data | Potentially destructive; in the documented Open WebUI Docker setup, deleting the volume deletes chats, users, and settings | Only when data loss is understood and intended, and the procedure matches the installation. |
There is no single reset sequence supported for every local AI workbench. Open WebUI documents Docker, Python, Kubernetes, and Podman deployment options, so do not transfer Docker volume instructions to another installation. For production deployments, its quick start recommends pinning a specific release rather than using a floating tag.
Understand what can work offline
“Local” does not mean every feature works without an internet connection. LM Studio documents that chats with downloaded models, document chat, and local-server inference can work offline. Searching for models, downloading models or runtimes, and checking for updates require connectivity. See LM Studio’s offline-operation documentation.
Ollama states in its FAQ, “We don’t see your prompts or data when you run locally.” That statement is limited to running locally; it is not a blanket privacy claim about cloud-hosted models or third-party connections. Ollama also documents disabling cloud features with disable_ollama_cloud or OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1; the service must be restarted after changing the configuration. Its FAQ says this also removes access to cloud models and web search: Ollama FAQ.
