You can run AI locally without spending mobile data on every prompt, but the initial app and model downloads still need a connection. Install the runtime and download one compatible model over Wi-Fi or another trusted unmetered connection; once the required files are on your device, supported local features can work offline.
What “local AI” means for your data plan
With local inference, the model runs on your phone or computer instead of sending each prompt to a cloud service. After setup, supported local tasks do not need a mobile-data connection. The setup itself is not data-free: downloading the app or runtime, finding models, downloading model files, and installing updates can require internet access.

For example, LM Studio’s offline documentation says local model chats and document processing can work offline when the necessary files are present. It also notes that model discovery and downloads require connectivity. Google AI Edge Gallery describes its inference as on-device in its project documentation.

Offline operation applies to the local model features you have installed. Optional online features, updates, model discovery, and tools that call external services may still need internet. Test the feature you intend to use with both Wi-Fi and mobile data turned off.

For a phone-only start, Google AI Edge Gallery is the most direct option among these sources. For a computer, LM Studio offers local chat and document features. Choose by operating-system support, the model format accepted by the app, available RAM and storage, and the task you want to run—not by a promise of cloud-equivalent speed or accuracy.
Check storage and device capability before downloading
Model files vary substantially in size. Google AI Edge’s LiteRT-LM overview lists Gemma-4-E2B at 2.58 GB and EmbeddingGemma text variants at 165 MB, 388 MB, and 485 MB. These are listed model sizes, not a guarantee of total installed storage; other variants or quantizations may differ. See the LiteRT-LM overview for the model information.

Leave extra free space beyond the model’s listed size for the app or runtime, downloads, and normal device operation. Also check RAM: a model that fits on disk may still be unsuitable for a device with limited memory.

As examples for the Android Studio local-model workflow, Google’s guide lists Gemma E4B with 12 GB total RAM and 4 GB storage, and Gemma 26B MoE with 24 GB RAM and 17 GB storage. These are model- and workflow-specific figures, not universal minimums for local AI. Smaller models can be easier to fit within both data and storage limits, but model size alone does not establish how well or quickly a particular device will handle your task. Google cautions that local models in its Android Studio workflow can be slower and less accurate than cloud Gemini. Actual results depend on the model, device, and software.
Set up local AI while you have Wi-Fi
- Check your device. Confirm its operating system, available storage, and RAM. Google AI Edge Gallery’s project README lists Android 12+ and iOS 17+; verify current compatibility in the repository before installing.
- Install the app or runtime over Wi-Fi. Use the official project or app source for your chosen option. If using a computer, download the runtime before going offline.
- Select one suitable model. Check its file size and confirm that its format is supported by your chosen app. Start with one model that fits your storage and intended task instead of downloading alternatives over cellular.
- Complete the model download and confirm it is available locally. Wait until the app shows the model as ready. If you transfer a model file from another device, confirm that the runtime supports that file format; LM Studio documents sideloading, and AI Edge Gallery supports custom models.
- Test with all connections off. Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi and mobile data, open the local model, and run a simple prompt. If it fails, check that the model finished downloading, is selected, and is supported by the app before reconnecting to troubleshoot.
A USB-C flash drive can be an optional way to carry a compatible model file downloaded on another device. It only helps if your phone, drive connection, file format, and chosen runtime all support that transfer; compatibility is not guaranteed for every combination.

What to expect when you go offline
Once the needed model and runtime files are installed, a local prompt can be processed without a cloud round trip, helping avoid repeated cellular use for supported tasks. The amount of data saved depends on what you would otherwise do online; there is no established universal figure for typical savings or for the data required to set up local AI.

Google AI Edge Gallery’s README states: “All model inferences happen directly on your device hardware. No internet is required, ensuring total privacy for your prompts, images, and sensitive data.” That describes the project’s on-device inference; it does not mean downloading the app or models requires no internet, or that every feature in every local-AI app is offline.
If the offline test does not work, reconnect to Wi-Fi and check for an incomplete model download, a model/runtime format mismatch, insufficient free space, or a device that cannot support the selected model. Avoid using mobile data for repeated model downloads until you have checked the file size and compatibility.
