Cloud AI remains useful for harder work, larger-model capabilities, and connected features. The practical answer is not to replace one with the other: choose per task, and check whether the full workflow—not just the model—inference—stays offline.
What local AI is good for
A local model runs inference on your device rather than sending the prompt to a hosted model. That can make it a good fit when you need to work without a connection, want to keep a prompt on the machine, or need to follow a policy that restricts cloud AI. It can also be useful for routine tasks such as summarizing notes, rewriting a passage, or trying an idea against a model you control.

Those benefits depend on the specific model, application, and hardware. A local model is not automatically accurate, fast, private, or fully disconnected. Microsoft’s guidance treats local and cloud models as options to combine: an application may start locally and fall back to a cloud endpoint when the model is unavailable, the device is unsupported, the user declines a download, or a task needs a larger model. Microsoft’s local-versus-cloud guidance describes the trade-offs.

Tasks that are good candidates
- Work you need to do without an internet connection, after downloading the model and any required components.
- Prompts involving sensitive material, if the application’s data handling and connected tools meet your requirements.
- Routine writing or transformations that you have checked and found the chosen model handles adequately.
- Experimenting with open models or using AI under a policy that requires local processing.
When cloud AI remains the better fit
Cloud services can provide access to larger models and managed computing resources without requiring your device to run them. They may also offer integrations, collaboration, and features that depend on a service connection. That can make cloud a practical choice for complex work, or for tasks where the local model’s quality, context handling, or available tools are not sufficient.

There is no universal quality ranking that applies to every local and cloud model. Compare the actual models and features available to you. Android Developers, for example, says local models in the documented Android Studio setup typically have lower performance than its cloud Gemini options, including less accurate responses, higher latency, and limited feature support; some Android Studio AI features and use cases do not work with a local model. That is specific to Android Studio, not a benchmark of every local model. Android Studio’s local-model guidance explains its limitations and setup.
Tasks that may call for cloud access
- Work that consistently needs stronger reasoning or a larger model than your device can run well.
- Workflows that depend on a cloud service’s integrations, managed features, or collaboration across locations.
- Tasks where the local model’s answers are not good enough after checking representative examples.
Local inference does not guarantee an offline workflow
Downloading a model requires a connection, and some applications may refresh model catalogs or use networked tools. An AI agent can reason locally while still reaching the internet to perform an action. Microsoft’s Windows AI FAQ says that, in Foundry Local, inference input and output remain on the machine after the model is downloaded and cached; the initial download needs internet, and catalog metadata may refresh optionally. Those details apply to that product, not every local AI application. Microsoft’s FAQ describes the boundary.

Apple’s WWDC26 demonstration of MLX makes the distinction tangible: the model ran locally while the demonstrated agent sent Git commands over the network. As Apple MLX engineer Angelos put it, “All of this is happening locally, the model runs on my hardware and only the git commands reach the network.” That describes his demonstrated workflow, not a guarantee about other apps. Apple’s session shows why it is important to inspect tool permissions and network activity as well as model location.

Cloud services are not automatically unsafe either: review their security controls and data terms against your privacy and compliance needs.

Hardware requirements depend on the model
Running inference locally uses your computer’s memory, processor, graphics hardware, and storage. Those resources can limit which model you can use and how responsive it feels; you may also need to install and maintain the runtime and model yourself.

These are platform-specific figures for those Android Studio model options, not minimum specifications for local AI generally. Existing hardware may already be sufficient for a smaller or differently optimized model; do not assume you need a new computer based on one example. The Android Studio setup instructions name LM Studio and Ollama as local providers, and advise checking context length and choosing models trained for tool use when using agent mode. See the Android Developers guidance for its current setup details.
Compare the workflow, not just the model label
Before choosing a local or cloud setup, run a few representative tasks through the actual options available to you. A model that is suitable for short summaries may not be suitable for long documents or tool-driven work. Compare these factors:
- Answer quality: Does it reliably handle your real tasks, and can you verify the output?
- Privacy and network exposure: Where do prompts and outputs go, and can tools or integrations contact external services?
- Offline reliability: What works after setup with the network disabled, and what still needs a connection?
- Speed: How does it respond on your device and connection for the tasks you care about?
- Context and integrations: Can it handle the material and connected features your workflow needs?
- Hardware and setup: Is there enough RAM and storage, and how much installation and configuration is required?
- Maintenance: Are you prepared to manage model and runtime updates, or would managed service updates be preferable?
- Cost: Compare the hardware you already own, electricity, any subscriptions, and usage-based cloud charges for your actual workload.
Microsoft notes that local use can avoid additional model-use charges beyond the hardware investment, while cloud charges can accumulate with usage. That is a general cost distinction, not a total-cost calculation: your existing hardware, electricity, workload, subscription, and API use change the result. Local use also makes you responsible for maintenance and updates; cloud providers manage service updates and can scale compute. Microsoft’s comparison lays out these considerations.
Quick Recap
A sensible way to use both
- Pick a few recurring tasks. Include an ordinary prompt, a longer or harder task, and any task where privacy or offline access matters.
- Try them with the model you can run locally. Judge usefulness, correctness, response time, and whether your device handles it comfortably.
- Check the whole application. Review downloads, sync, telemetry, integrations, and any agent tools that may use the network.
- Use cloud selectively. Turn to a cloud service when a task exceeds the local model’s capabilities or requires connected features, after checking its data handling.
- Keep the choice reversible. Reassess when your model, hardware, application features, or workload changes.
