Local AI can keep your resume and prompts on your computer only if the entire workflow stays on-device. A cloud AI service sends your content to a provider, whose training, retention and privacy practices depend on the exact product, account and settings. The available documentation does not establish that local or cloud AI writes better job applications overall. Choose based on your privacy needs, the service terms you can accept, and whether your computer can comfortably run the local model you want.
Local AI vs. cloud AI for job applications
| Consideration | Local AI | Cloud AI |
|---|---|---|
| Where prompts are processed | On your computer, if the model, interface, files and connected features all stay local. | On the provider’s infrastructure; prompts are sent to the service. |
| Privacy controls | Can reduce transmission to a model provider, but device security and software behavior still matter. | Depend on the specific product, account type, settings and provider policy. |
| Writing quality | No established overall advantage for job applications; results depend on the model and instructions. | No established overall advantage for job applications; assess the actual service and its output. |
| Setup and resources | Requires compatible software, local memory and storage, and some setup and maintenance. | No local model installation or model VRAM requirement; requires a device and internet access. |
| Likely fit | People who prioritize local data handling and have compatible hardware. | People who prioritize convenience and accept the selected service’s data terms. |
Is local AI more private for my resume?
It can be, but “local” is a description of the data path, not a blanket privacy guarantee. If the model and application process your resume and prompt on your computer, and no connected feature sends them elsewhere, the content can stay on that device. But a cloud fallback, file-sync feature, plugin, connector or other networked tool can create another data path. Check how the particular software works rather than relying on the label “local.”

Local processing also does not protect a resume from someone with access to an unsecured computer, an exposed account or an unsafe copy of the file. Keep the device and its storage protected, and avoid leaving unnecessary copies of sensitive documents.

- OpenAI: OpenAI says inputs and outputs on its business offerings and API are not used to train models by default. Its platform documentation distinguishes training use from abuse monitoring and application-state retention, which can vary by endpoint. Those statements do not automatically describe every consumer product or account.
- Anthropic: Anthropic’s API documentation describes zero-data-retention arrangements for eligible API use, with feature-specific exceptions. Its current documentation gives designated Covered Models a 30-day retention exception. Do not assume API terms apply to consumer-app use.
- Google Cloud Vertex AI: Google Cloud documents a restriction on using customer data for training absent prior permission or instruction. Its zero-data-retention guidance also notes that prompts may be logged for abuse monitoring under relevant terms. A training restriction is not the same as a promise of no logging or retention.
Before sharing personal information, review the current policy and settings for the specific product you will use. Policies can change; the distinctions above reflect the providers’ official documentation accessed October 4, 2026.
Reduce what you share
- Remove your street address, phone number, email address and other identifiers that the task does not require.
- Remove references’ personal details and use a generic employer label where it will still let the tool help.
- Do not upload identity documents.
- Check account-level controls for model improvement and chat history, and review whether files, connectors, browser tools or sync add another route for your content.
Does local AI send my files to the cloud?
Not necessarily. A model running locally can process files on your computer without sending them to a model provider, but that depends on the complete setup—not just the model. Check the app’s documentation and settings for cloud fallback, sync, telemetry, connected tools and file handling. If you cannot establish where a feature sends your content, do not use it with a sensitive resume until you can.
Is local AI as good as cloud AI for a cover letter?
There is no established universal winner for resume tailoring or cover letters. The documentation available here describes privacy practices and local runtime requirements, not controlled comparisons of application-writing quality, interview outcomes or applicant-tracking-system results. Model choice and instructions matter, so judge the tools you are actually considering instead of assuming that local or cloud is better.
Compare outputs without risking your real details
- Prepare an anonymized resume and one job description. Remove contact details and use the same input for each tool.
- Give each tool the same task and constraints, such as tailoring a summary or drafting a cover letter without adding facts.
- Check that dates, titles, qualifications and measurable results match your source material exactly.
- Look for relevant links between your real experience and the role, not skills or responsibilities the job description mentions but your history does not support.
- Judge whether the voice sounds natural and like something you could explain in an interview.
- Ask the tool to flag unsupported claims and identify which source detail supports each proposed bullet, then verify every detail yourself.
Do not let a model invent accomplishments, credentials, employers, metrics or responsibilities to make an application sound more persuasive. You are responsible for the claims in the final version; edit and fact-check the draft before submitting it.

How much RAM or VRAM do I need to run an AI model locally?
There is no universal minimum: memory needs depend on the model, the context length and your runtime. As one concrete example, Ollama’s 2026 quickstart lists a 7.2 GB download for its Gemma 4 E2B example and recommends 8 GB of available VRAM or unified memory on a Mac for that model. These are figures for that example, not a general laptop requirement.
Ollama says system RAM can be used when less VRAM is available, but responses may be slower. Larger context windows require more memory. A resume and job description are not unusually long inputs, but the chosen model’s context setting still affects memory use.
Will local AI work on my laptop?
It depends on your operating system, hardware, drivers, runtime and chosen model. Ollama’s macOS documentation lists macOS Sonoma (14) or newer; its Windows documentation lists Windows 10 22H2 or newer. GPU acceleration depends on supported hardware and software: Ollama documents support involving NVIDIA compute capability and drivers, AMD ROCm, Apple Metal and Vulkan options. Check the current runtime compatibility documentation for your exact computer before installing or buying hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Local models also need disk space. Ollama says model files on macOS may occupy tens to hundreds of GB, depending on what you download. An external SSD is an optional way to store models if internal storage is tight; it does not make the model write better. Cloud AI avoids local model downloads and model VRAM needs, but still requires a device and internet connection to use the service.
Quick Recap
Which should you choose?
- Consider local AI if keeping application materials on your own computer is a priority, you can verify that the whole workflow remains local, and your hardware and storage meet the selected model’s requirements.
- Consider cloud AI if convenience matters more, you are comfortable with the specific provider’s terms and settings, and you can limit the personal information you share.
- Either way use anonymized material for experiments, compare the actual outputs, and check every application claim against your real experience.
