Before your first day, review each social account separately: check what a visitor can see, who can see older and future posts, how tags appear, and how people can find or contact you. Use each platform’s built-in privacy controls, then inspect your profile as someone outside your network would. These steps can limit visibility, but they cannot erase copies others have made or prevent all platform data analysis.
1. Check what a stranger can see on your profile
Start with your public-facing profile: bio, photo, work and education details, connections or followers, and any other visible information. CareerOneStop, a U.S. Department of Labor career resource, recommends limiting what the public can view and considering whether you would be comfortable with an employer seeing your information, comments, posts, photos, connections and videos (CareerOneStop: Social media).

- Open the profile-view or “view as” feature if the service offers one, or check the profile while logged out or from an account that is not connected to you.
- Look for details you no longer want broadly visible and change their audience or remove them if appropriate.
- Check more than the profile page: public comments, photos, videos, group activity and connection lists may each have separate visibility controls.
2. Review old posts and set the audience for new ones
Privacy settings are not always retroactive. Check the audience on older posts as well as the default audience for anything you publish going forward. On Facebook, Meta’s audience selector lets you choose who can see a status, photo or other post; the available choices and labels may change over time (Meta Safety Center: Protect Your Information).

- Open the platform’s privacy or audience settings and find controls for posts or profile visibility.
- Review older posts individually, or use a bulk audience-limiting tool if the platform provides one and its effect matches what you want.
- Set the default audience for future posts deliberately rather than assuming it is limited to friends or followers.
- Revisit posts that mention your workplace, colleagues, clients or job search; changing the audience does not necessarily remove copies or shares already made.
3. Check tags and profile or timeline approval
Tagged content is a separate route by which material can appear alongside your profile. Facebook’s tag review and timeline review controls can let you decide whether tagged material appears on your profile. They do not control the original post: Meta notes that the person who posted on their own profile controls that post, and tagged people and their friends may also be able to see it (Meta Safety Center: Protect Your Information).

- Turn on review of tags or tagged posts before they appear on your profile, where the service offers that option.
- Check existing tags and remove yourself from items you do not want associated with your profile.
- If a post belongs to someone else, ask that person to change its audience or remove it; profile approval settings cannot override the other person’s controls.
4. Review who can find or contact your accounts
Look for settings that let people find you by email address or phone number, send connection or follow requests, or contact you directly. Also review any public profile fields that expose contact details. Meta’s Privacy Checkup is a starting point for selected Facebook privacy and security settings, but it does not replace checking other services individually (Meta Safety Center: Protect Your Information).
There is no single control that changes privacy across all social networks. Repeat the review on every account you use, including older accounts that may still have public posts or profile information. Menu names and paths vary by service and can change, so use the platform’s current settings interface.

5. Understand what privacy settings cannot do
Restricting an audience reduces who can see content through that account’s selected settings; it does not guarantee that information stays private. Other users may copy, screenshot or share material, and platforms or third parties may analyze information such as metadata. Meta’s MyDigitalWorld resource explains that audience settings do not prevent all data analysis (MyDigitalWorld: Privacy and You).

For that reason, treat audience controls as one layer of risk reduction, not a way to make past activity disappear or to guarantee that an employer cannot encounter it.

6. Know the employment context—and its limits
In the United States, the FTC and EEOC say employers may seek social-media information when considering a person’s background. They also explain that using background information in employment decisions must comply with federal laws protecting applicants and employees from discrimination (FTC and EEOC: Background Checks: What Employers Need to Know). Privacy settings do not determine what an employer is legally allowed to view or use. Outside the United States, check the applicable local rules.
Work and personal accounts can also have different expectations. LinkedIn’s privacy policy says an employer may review use of enterprise services it provides. The policy says job searches and personal messages are not shown to an employer unless the member chooses to share them through LinkedIn (LinkedIn Privacy Policy). This distinction applies to the policy’s treatment of LinkedIn services, not to every workplace tool or account.

A quick pre-start checklist
- View each profile as an outsider and check visible details, activity and connections.
- Review the audience of older posts and choose a deliberate default for new posts.
- Enable tag or timeline review where available; inspect existing tags.
- Check discovery, contact and public-profile information settings.
- Remember that other users can retain or share content and settings do not stop all data analysis.
- For legal questions about screening, distinguish U.S. federal guidance from rules in your jurisdiction.
