A local AI can help decide which email deserves your attention, but Nimrod Aldea’s experiment with Mira did not make Gmail safe to ignore. After about five days, he was still checking Gmail to see whether the assistant had missed anything. Mira changed what he looked at first; it did not remove the need to review his inbox.
What Mira is—and what it is not
Mira is a custom local AI email client Aldea built to identify messages that need action. It is not a replacement email provider: Gmail remains the underlying account, handling the mail, spam filtering and sorting described in his account. Mira reads messages from Gmail’s existing piles and tries to surface what matters.

The distinction is between organizing messages and deciding what deserves attention. A school announcement might be worth knowing about without requiring a response; a payment notice may be useful context; a question from a boss about a meeting may call for action. Mira’s intended output is a concise bottom line about a message, rather than a fuller recap of everything it says. Aldea contrasts that approach with Gemini’s more complete email summaries; that is his characterization, not an independent product comparison.

He describes the goal as a “life center”: a tool that helps identify what requires action, instead of merely creating more categories for email.

Why he still opens Gmail
The central obstacle was trust. Aldea said the project was a weekend build and that he had used the workflow for about five days when he wrote about it. He kept checking Gmail to find out whether Mira had missed anything. That makes the experiment a useful account of early adoption, not evidence that an AI filter can reliably replace inbox review.
The account reports no measured accuracy, missed-message rate, time savings, hardware requirements or extended follow-up. Aldea names the local model as “Gemma4: e4b,” but provides no benchmark or other basis for generalizing its performance. A positive early impression cannot establish that important mail will always be surfaced.

Drafting is different from sending
Mira can produce a draft, but Aldea retains control over sending it. As he put it, “The Send button is still mine, and will probably stay that way for a long time.” This separates two kinds of automation: suggesting or preparing a response, and taking the consequential step of sending it.
That human checkpoint does not prove the triage is complete—an email that is never surfaced may never reach the drafting stage. It does, however, show where Aldea chose to keep direct control in the workflow he described.

What Gmail’s API makes possible
Google describes the Gmail API as a RESTful API for accessing Gmail mailboxes and sending mail. Its documented use cases include reading messages for extraction, indexing or backup; sending mail programmatically; and organizing, filtering or sorting messages. Google also documents labels, drafts, threads and mailbox-change notifications.
Those capabilities provide context for the kinds of workflows a Gmail integration can support. They do not establish which API calls, permissions or architecture Mira uses. The author’s account does not provide that implementation detail. Google’s overview was last updated September 18, 2026 UTC.

What this experiment can—and cannot—tell you
Mira’s reported value is attention triage: reducing the need to read every message in full by putting a short action signal first. The unresolved question is whether that signal is dependable enough for a person to stop checking the underlying inbox. After roughly five days, Aldea had not reached that point himself.
