Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a beginner who wants a familiar desktop chat experience, LM Studio and Jan are the clearest starting points. LM Studio documents a step-by-step install, model-download, load, and chat flow; Jan’s quickstart says it downloads a default model on first launch. Choose between them based on your computer and the workflow you prefer. Open WebUI and Ollama can also be useful, but they serve different roles and may involve more setup than installing a standalone chat app.
What “local AI chat” means
A local chat app is the interface you use; the AI model is a separate download. You choose model files, download them, and load a model so it can use your computer’s memory and processing power. The app does not make every model equally fast or suitable: model size and other settings affect what your machine can run comfortably.

“Local” describes where inference runs, not the model’s quality or license. LM Studio notes that models described as open-source or open-weight vary in how open they are and in their licenses. Check the license for the specific model you intend to use.

Which app should a beginner choose?
| Option | What it is | Good fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|
| LM Studio | A desktop app. Its getting-started guide covers installing the app, finding and downloading a model, loading it, and chatting. | A guided desktop workflow for discovering and trying models. Check its current system requirements before choosing a model. |
| Jan | A desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. Its quickstart says a default model downloads on first launch. It documents both local models and optional cloud providers. | A desktop chat app that gets you to an initial model quickly, with the option to use a cloud provider separately. |
| Open WebUI | A web interface hosted on your own infrastructure. It is a different setup category from a standalone desktop app. | A browser-based interface and a willingness to configure a self-hosted setup. |
| Ollama | A local model runner, rather than the same kind of all-in-one desktop chat app. Open WebUI documents native integration with it. | A local model runner, API, or backend to pair with a separate interface. |
The Open WebUI alternatives guide points users seeking a standalone desktop app toward LM Studio or Jan, and describes Ollama as a local model runner. These distinctions are more useful for choosing a first app than treating all four as interchangeable chat clients.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
What the first setup involves
- Install the app. Choose a desktop app such as LM Studio or Jan and follow its current official installation instructions for your operating system.
- Select and download a model. The app and model are separate. The model files may take time and storage to download; Jan’s quickstart says it downloads a default model the first time the app launches.
- Load the model. Loading allocates computer memory for the model weights and other parameters. In LM Studio, the documented sequence proceeds from downloading a model to loading it and opening the Chat tab.
- Start a conversation and adjust expectations to the model and machine. If loading is slow or the model does not fit, try a smaller model or more modest context settings where the app allows it.
Check hardware before downloading a model
Hardware guidance is app-specific, not a universal minimum for running local AI. LM Studio’s undated requirements documentation, accessed in 2026, recommends 16GB or more of RAM for supported Apple Silicon Macs and Windows PCs. It also says an 8GB Mac may work with smaller models and modest context sizes. These are LM Studio recommendations, not guarantees for every model or app.
Jan likewise says local models use the computer’s RAM and processing power, and advises choosing a model that fits the system. Before settling on a model, check the current requirements for both the app and the model; a computer that can launch the app may still be a poor fit for a particular model or context size.

Local models and cloud models are different modes
Jan’s quickstart describes local models as running on the computer and working offline without an API key. It also documents cloud models, which run on provider servers and require a key. Those are distinct operating modes: if keeping a conversation local matters to you, verify which model or provider is selected and check the app’s settings. The local-model description is not a blanket promise that every app feature or configuration works offline.

A simple decision path
- Want the most straightforward desktop path? Start by comparing LM Studio’s documented setup steps with Jan’s first-launch flow, then check their current OS and hardware guidance.
- Want to use a browser interface hosted on your own infrastructure? Consider Open WebUI, recognizing that this is a self-hosted setup rather than a single desktop chat app.
- Want a runner or API, or a backend for another interface? Consider Ollama rather than expecting it to be the same product category as LM Studio or Jan.
