It lets local management software communicate with Intel’s Management Engine through the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) driver. Its presence can be legitimate, but the filename alone cannot confirm that a particular copy on your PC is genuine.
What does LMS.exe do?
Intel describes LMS as a local Windows service for platforms with Intel AMT 9.0 or later. It routes requests from local management applications to the Intel AMT host through the MEI driver. It can also receive AMT alerts and write them to the Windows Application event log. Intel AMT releases 2.5 through 8.1 used the User Notification Service (UNS) for the earlier service role. Platform and package details can vary by PC manufacturer and generation. Intel’s AMT getting-started guide and its AMT 11 developer guidance describe the service context.

Why is LMS.exe on my PC?
A PC may have LMS because it supports Intel AMT and its manufacturer installed the associated MEI driver package. Intel says OEM websites package the LMS installer with MEI drivers; Windows Automatic Update installs the MEI driver but does not install LMS or Intel Management and Security Status. Intel also documents LMS as a component required alongside other drivers and services for some OS-based AMT discovery and configuration functions. That does not mean every Windows PC needs LMS.
Whether it is useful on your machine depends on AMT support and configuration, whether local management functions are used, and whether an organization manages the PC. Intel’s guidance for a specific AMT version is not a guarantee that every OEM uses the same package or file location.

Is LMS.exe safe?
The name alone is not a safety check. Malware can use a familiar filename, and an unexpected path is a reason to investigate—not proof of infection. Check the executable path, its digital signature and publisher, the service configuration, and the driver package listed for your exact PC model.
Find the executable configured for the service
- In Task Manager, right-click the LMS process and choose Open file location, if that option is available. This identifies the file behind the running process.
- Alternatively, open Command Prompt and run
sc qc LMS. In the output, inspectBINARY_PATH_NAMEto see the executable configured for the service. Intel cites this command in its mitigation guide. The command reveals the configured path; it does not authenticate the file. - In File Explorer, right-click the executable, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if present. Check the signer and whether Windows reports the signature as valid.
- Compare the path, signer, and installed MEI or chipset package with support information for the PC’s exact model. If they do not line up, ask the manufacturer or a trusted security tool to investigate rather than downloading a replacement EXE from a file library.
Intel’s consulted material does not establish one universal LMS.exe location for every Windows and OEM configuration. Do not treat a path as authentic or malicious based only on whether it matches a location found online.
Optional process inspection
Microsoft’s downloadable Process Explorer can show active processes and search for handles or loaded DLLs. It is an optional diagnostic utility; using it does not by itself establish that a file is safe.

Can I disable or delete LMS.exe?
Do not delete the executable as a first step. Intel discusses disabling or removing the LMS service in a security-mitigation context, but removing the service does not itself delete LMS.exe; management software may reinstall or re-enable it. Disabling it can also affect AMT-related discovery, configuration, alerts, or management functions.
Rank #3
Intel’s mitigation-guide search excerpts mention checking for listeners on ports 16992, 16993, 16994, 16995, 623, and 664 for standard LMS variants. Treat that as a diagnostic aid, not a malware verdict or a complete port list: the excerpt notes that custom-developed LMS software may use other ports. A listening port alone does not prove that a process is malicious.
Choose the least risky next step
- Work or school PC: Ask your IT administrator before stopping or removing the service; the organization may rely on AMT management.
- Personal PC with AMT in use: Check the PC manufacturer’s guidance before changing the service or its driver package.
- No known AMT use and no obvious problem: Verify the service and package first. A familiar filename is not a reason on its own to remove a service.
- Path or signer does not match the expected OEM installation: Investigate with reputable security software or the PC manufacturer. Avoid manually deleting the executable, which can leave the service configuration or driver package inconsistent.
How do I reinstall or repair LMS.exe?
Get the driver package from the PC manufacturer’s support page for your exact model, commonly under chipset or Intel CSME drivers. Intel says LMS is packaged with MEI drivers on OEM websites and recommends the manufacturer’s route. Use model-specific support guidance rather than a generic package: AMT functions can depend on compatible driver, firmware, and BIOS versions. Windows Automatic Update may supply the MEI driver, but Intel says it does not install LMS.
Intel’s AMT guide explains the OEM driver route. Do not obtain a standalone copy of LMS.exe from a file-hosting site.
