GitDiagram: How to Map a GitHub Repo’s Architecture

Paste a GitHub repository URL into GitDiagram to create an interactive architecture overview. Learn how to inspect, export, verify, and choose a more precise tool when needed.

To turn a GitHub repository into a visual architecture diagram without cloning it, paste its URL or owner/repo into GitDiagram. You can also replace github.com with gitdiagram.com in a repository URL. The resulting diagram is a quick orientation map—not a complete dependency graph—so check important components and connections in the repository’s code.

How do you make a diagram from a GitHub repository?

  1. Choose the repository. Copy its GitHub URL, or note its owner/repo name. GitDiagram’s guide says repository file, branch, issue, and pull request URLs can also open a diagram for that repository.
  2. Open GitDiagram. Paste the URL or repository name into the service, or change github.com to gitdiagram.com in the URL.
  3. Wait for the diagram. If a diagram is already stored, it may open immediately. Otherwise, GitDiagram says a new one is usually generated in about a minute; that is the vendor’s estimate, not an independently measured time.
  4. Explore the map. Zoom to read it, then select linked components to open their related GitHub files or folders.
  5. Export or verify. Export a PNG for an image or copy the Mermaid source for editable documentation. Check any important architectural claim against the linked code, and regenerate the diagram if the repository has changed substantially since it was made.

These steps and interface details come from GitDiagram’s guide, updated September 29, 2026, and may change.

What does the generated diagram show?

According to GitDiagram, its generator reads the repository’s file tree and README, along with up to 12 source files. It creates an architecture explanation and a graph of up to 34 components, grouped into areas and connected with labeled links. The service says it checks each graph path against the repository before producing a Mermaid flowchart. Those are descriptions of the product’s process, not an independent assessment of how complete or accurate a particular diagram is.

The map is intended to make a large codebase easier to approach: it can point you toward major areas and relevant files. But a graph with a 34-component limit and a limited source-file sample should not be treated as an inventory of every module, import, or runtime connection.

How accurate is a GitHub repository diagram?

GitDiagram explicitly cautions that its diagram may simplify or omit parts of a repository and represents the repository state from when it was generated. Use it as a starting hypothesis, then inspect code where the exact relationship matters.

  • For a component’s purpose: open its linked file or folder and compare the explanation with the implementation.
  • For a connection or request path: trace the relevant calls in source code rather than assuming the visual link establishes every step.
  • For a complete import inventory: use an IDE or a language-specific dependency tool. GitDiagram’s guide names JetBrains IDEs, madge for JavaScript, and pydeps for Python, while warning that exhaustive import graphs can become difficult to read.
  • For a changed repository: create a fresh diagram before relying on it; an older map may no longer match the current code.

Do not use the overview by itself to establish exact callers, exhaustive dependencies, security findings, or a complete architecture inventory.

Which tool fits the question you want to answer?

What you need Suitable option Important distinction
A shareable overview of a repository without local setup GitDiagram It samples files and limits graph size, so verify details in code.
Multi-page project explanations and chat DeepWiki GitDiagram’s guide describes it as a generated wiki with diagrams and chat.
A diagram focused on a feature, request path, private code, or uncommitted changes A coding agent working in a local checkout It can inspect the checkout and tailor the view to a specific question.
More exact module or import relationships An IDE or language-specific dependency tool Exhaustive graphs may be less readable than a high-level architecture map.
Package versions, licenses, dependents, and known vulnerabilities GitHub dependency graph It summarizes package dependency data; it does not map the whole application architecture.
Repository activity, contributors, traffic, commits, or forks GitHub repository graphs These show activity and network information, not application architecture.

Can you diagram a private GitHub repository?

GitDiagram’s guide says private-repository access requires a fine-grained GitHub personal access token with read access to the relevant repository. The service says the token stays in a secure browser cookie, is sent only with your requests, and is not saved on its servers; it also says private diagrams are stored separately and accessible only with that token. These are vendor statements. Before granting access to sensitive code, read the service’s privacy policy and check your organization’s rules for third-party tools and tokens.

What does GitDiagram cost?

GitDiagram’s guide says opening stored diagrams is free and creating new diagrams is free within a daily limit. After the limit, it describes adding a personal OpenAI API key. Limits and service terms can change, so check the product’s current information before using it.

The guide also describes a separate video feature: free videos are limited per day, with a stated price of $3 per video after the daily limit. The project README says new videos are in early access while existing videos can be watched. Because availability, limits, and price may change, confirm them on the product before relying on those details. The video feature is separate from creating a repository diagram.

When should you use GitHub’s own graphs instead?

For repository activity and network information

GitHub repository graphs cover activity and network information such as contributors, traffic, commits, code frequency, and forks. Availability depends on plan and repository visibility. GitHub’s documentation says certain graphs are public-repository features on GitHub Free, while all repository graphs are available for public and private repositories on Pro, Team, and Enterprise Cloud. Contributor, commit, and code-frequency insights are limited to repositories with fewer than 10,000 commits. Check GitHub’s current graph documentation and plans page for current rules.

For package and supply-chain details

GitHub’s dependency graph identifies dependencies using supported manifests and lockfiles, plus submitted dependency data. It can show versions, licenses, manifest sources, vulnerability information, and supported transitive paths. Public repositories can show dependents; private repositories do not report that dependent list. This is the better fit for package inventory and supply-chain review, not a visual map of how the application’s major parts work together.

What if you need repeatable diagrams in development or CI?

CodeBoarding is another option to investigate for workflows that need local development or automation. Its repository documents a CLI, browser platform, VS Code and Open VSX extensions, and a GitHub Action. It lists Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, Java, Go, PHP, Rust, and C# among supported languages. Its documentation says public maps require a committed .codeboarding/analysis.json at the selected branch or commit.

CodeBoarding says telemetry is on by default and records command, success or failure, duration, token cost, repository size and languages, and account. It says it does not collect source code, file names, repository names, paths, prompts, model outputs, or API keys. Review its current documentation and configuration before using it, particularly for private or organizational repositories.
