TypeSafe Jev proposes replacing a generative LLM prompt-router with a structured decision call that classifies an agent task and selects a model tier. Mika’s DEV Community article reports a 95ms median routing latency, but it does not provide enough benchmark detail to establish that result—or the claimed savings—as generally achievable.
What TypeSafe Jev is meant to change
A conventional LLM router receives a task, generates a textual classification or routing answer, and leaves the application to interpret that answer. That adds a model call before the selected model does the substantive work, and the application must handle the possibility that the generated text does not match the expected format.

The TypeSafe Jev proposal replaces that generated response with a structured decision call. The example supplies a state string and structured questions: whether the task needs code work, and which of three tiers—light, medium, or heavy—should handle it. The application then reads classification, tier-selection, and confidence fields from the response.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The architectural distinction is not that the later model stops reasoning. It is that the first decision is framed as classification and dispatch rather than open-ended text generation. That can simplify response handling, but it does not by itself establish that the classification is correct, calibrated, available, or faster end to end.

What the article reports—and what the figures establish
Mika’s DEV Community post, displayed as published on September 28 with no year shown in the retrieved page, reports the following figures. The post does not state a benchmark method, sample size, workload, comparison baseline, or independent replication, so these should be read as the author’s reported results rather than expected production outcomes.
| Reported measure | Figure and qualification |
|---|---|
| Existing prompt-router overhead | 2 to 4 seconds, as reported by Mika; the post does not specify the workload or how this was measured. |
| TypeSafe Jev routing latency | 95ms at p50 and 210ms at p95, as reported by Mika; the post does not provide test conditions or a reproducible benchmark. |
| Decision cost | $0.04 per 1,000 decisions, as reported by Mika; the post does not detail the pricing basis or what costs are included. |
| Schema errors | 0.0%, as reported by Mika; no sample size or error definition is given. |
| API bill reduction | 80%+, as reported by Mika; the comparison baseline and workload are not stated. |
The title’s “90ms” is therefore best understood as a rounded headline figure, not a separately documented measurement. A p50 describes the median in the reported test, while p95 is a higher-latency point; neither alone tells a team how a complete agent workflow will perform. A fair comparison would measure both approaches on the same workload and include the routing call, retries, downstream model calls, and failure handling.

What the example requires
The post’s sample is written for Python 3.9 or later and requires an OpenRouter API key. It uses Python’s standard-library urllib to send a request to https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/systemone, with the model identifier ~typesafe/jev-latest. The example reads classification, selected-tier, and confidence values from the response.

How to decide whether this routing pattern fits
Measure the full decision path
Compare the structured call with the existing router under the same representative tasks. Measure end-to-end latency distributions, not just a single median, and include network time, retries, timeouts, and downstream dispatch. If the route call is only a small share of total task time, reducing router latency may have little effect on user-visible completion time.
Evaluate quality as well as format
A response that always fits a schema can still send work to the wrong tier. Test routing accuracy against a labeled set of your own tasks, inspect confidence calibration, and decide what the application should do when confidence is low or the decision conflicts with a hard constraint. Schema reliability and classification quality are separate measures.

Count total cost and operational risk
Calculate cost per successful task, including the routing decision, input size, retries, and any work triggered by a mistaken route. Also verify service availability, define timeout and fallback behavior, and decide how tier criteria will be maintained as tasks and models change. A low quoted cost per decision is useful only if its accounting matches your workload.
