One model can serve different roles without training another model: an application can wrap the same checkpoint in distinct inference profiles that specify instructions, context, tools, budgets, and output format. That changes how the model is used, not what it learned. A small 2026 tool-selection pilot illustrates one narrow benefit of limiting exposed tool schemas, but it does not prove that multi-role routing improves accuracy, cost, or latency.
What it means to specialize inference without training
Specializing inference means configuring the application around a model call rather than creating role-specific weights. The shared checkpoint supplies learned capabilities; the profile tells the serving system what task to perform and what resources or constraints apply.

As Yuri Pocepaev puts it, “The architectural unit is an inference profile: the instructions, context, tools, budgets, and output contract surrounding a model call.” (DEV Community, September 29, 2026.)
A chat profile, a code profile, a reasoning profile, and an evidence-mediator profile are possible examples, not a required cast of separate agents. A router can select one profile for a request, or an orchestrator can arrange multiple calls into a workflow. In either case, the calls may use the same model weights.

Keep the application roles distinct
- User-facing entry point: the interface or service that receives the request.
- Worker responsibility: the task assigned to a particular call, such as analyzing code or summarizing retrieved evidence.
- Model endpoint or alias: the serving destination selected for that call.
Giving several calls different alias names does not, by itself, make their behavior meaningfully different. The request must actually receive the corresponding instructions, context, tools, limits, and output contract.
What an inference profile should specify
A profile is useful when its role can be enforced and evaluated, rather than merely named. Define the following for each profile:
- Responsibility and scope: what the call should do, and what it must leave to another step.
- Context and tools: which background information and tool schemas are visible for this task.
- Generation controls: the controls supported by the serving stack, such as temperature or output limits.
- Budgets: input, output, time, and iteration limits.
- Output contract: the required structure and how the caller should handle malformed or incomplete output.
- Admission and overload behavior: what happens when the service is at capacity or a request exceeds its budget.
Pass the effective profile into the actual model request. For diagnosis, record its version, tool set, context size, generation limits, and timeout. Avoid logging private request content unnecessarily. And treat prompt visibility as separate from authority: the execution layer must independently enforce which operations the model is permitted to invoke.

What the tool-schema pilot found—and what it did not
Pocepaev’s 2026 pilot tested tool selection on ten synthetic tasks: five in English and five in Russian. Each task was run once under each of four tool-catalogue conditions, for 40 requests total. The five-tool core catalogue covered repository capabilities. The other conditions added 15 repository-related alternatives, 15 tools from unrelated domains, or both groups for 50 tools total. The system instruction and task prompt stayed the same across conditions.
Requests used one endpoint and requested alias, temperature zero, automatic tool choice, a 256-token output limit, and a fixed seed. Task order and schema order were shuffled deterministically. The reported measurements were:

| Catalogue condition | Expected selections and arguments | Median input tokens | Total input tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 core tools | 10/10 | 619.5 | 6,208 |
| 20 tools, including repository alternatives | 10/10 | 1,691.5 | 16,928 |
| 20 tools, including cross-domain alternatives | 10/10 | 1,759.5 | 17,608 |
| 50 mixed tools | 10/10 | 3,827.5 | 38,288 |
All figures are Pocepaev’s reported results from that pilot; each condition had ten requests, one for each task. Comparing the five-tool and 50-tool conditions, the author calculated 83.79% fewer reported input tokens with five tools, while the 50-tool requests used about 6.17 times as many input tokens.
The token counts are the server-reported prompt_tokens for the complete request, including instructions, the user message, and tool definitions. They are not an isolated count of schema tokens, a GPU-time measurement, billed cost, or total cost for an agent workflow. Every response passed the author’s checks, so the pilot showed no accuracy improvement. The prose answers for tasks that did not call a tool were not independently scored.

How far to generalize the result
The defensible conclusion is narrow: for these ten short, explicit tasks, the extra schemas were unnecessary, and removing them reduced reported request input tokens without selection errors in this run. The result is not evidence that fewer tools generally improve accuracy, or that routing roles around one model is equivalent to training separate models.
The pilot used one run per task and condition, did not execute tools, and included no router, deferred discovery, grounded final-answer scoring, or concurrency stress test. The recorded endpoint and serving fingerprint were not backed by a captured immutable weight digest. Shared-backend traffic and transport affected wall time; time to first token and isolated prefill were not measured. With every response passing, the results also have a ceiling effect: this setup could not show whether a smaller catalogue would outperform a larger one.
Tool count is only one design variable. A narrow catalogue can omit a capability the task needs, while a small catalogue can still contain confusing near-neighbors. Schema length and clarity, semantic similarity, task ambiguity, and capability coverage matter too. The pilot therefore does not establish generalization, latency reduction, or improved accuracy.

Choose between fixed tool subsets and deferred discovery
Static role-specific subsets
Expose a known set of tools from the start when task boundaries and required capabilities are stable. This keeps the available choices explicit and avoids a separate discovery step. The trade-off is that a task requiring an omitted capability needs a deliberate fallback or handoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDeferred discovery
Start with a small discovery interface and load relevant tool definitions only when needed. This can keep the initial request smaller for a large catalogue, but the system adds a capability-search decision and may add latency. Anthropic describes this approach for its Claude platform and reports internal results; those are vendor-reported findings, not independent confirmation of performance for other systems or this architecture (Anthropic, “Advanced tool use”).
A controlled combination
A practical design can pair a small core tool set with constrained discovery or an authorized handoff. Make the transition explicit: define what the initial profile may discover, how a discovered capability is checked, and what happens when the needed capability is absent or unauthorized.
Evaluate the complete workflow, not just tool selection
Tool use is a sequence of decisions and operations. A model can name the right tool but supply invalid arguments; valid arguments can still fail during execution; and successful execution does not guarantee that the final answer uses the returned evidence correctly. Evaluate these stages separately:
- Selection or abstention: Was a tool appropriate, or should the model have answered without one or requested clarification?
- Arguments: Were they schema-valid and correct for the task?
- Execution: Did the authorized operation succeed against a controlled fixture?
- Final answer: Did the response solve the task using the evidence returned by the tool?
Keep evaluation fixtures controlled and enforce permissions outside the model. Related work suggests why the stages should not be collapsed: MetaTool treats deciding whether tools are needed separately from choosing among similar or multiple tools, and its abstract reports continuing tool-selection difficulty among evaluated models (MetaTool). AnyTool is an example of hierarchical API retrieval and self-reflection for large API catalogues (AnyTool). LLMCompiler studies planned parallel function execution; its reported result of up to 3.7× lower latency than ReAct applies to that work’s evaluated tasks, not as a forecast for shared-model profiles (LLMCompiler).
Record enough to reproduce and diagnose results
For each evaluation, track total tokens across all stages, tool-schema tokens, retries and iterations, time to first useful answer, queue time, total-latency distributions, finish reasons, and failures. Separate cold- and warm-cache behavior: shorter prompts do not guarantee better prefix-cache reuse. Save the schemas, fixtures, ordering seeds, effective profile versions, scoring rules, and raw responses so a result can be reproduced.
