Set retention by what each event is for, not by the fact that it travels over a realtime stream. Keep transient collaboration state briefly, give vehicle updates a bounded operational history, and store dispatch changes or proof of delivery separately when audit, contract, or legal needs require it. For reconnects, send a current snapshot and allow only a limited replay; authorize both subscriptions and replay requests on the server.
Which delivery-map events should be retained?
Different events lose value at different rates and carry different risks. The periods below are design starting points, not legal categories or universal retention rules. Choose actual durations to match operational needs, customer commitments, contracts, and applicable law.

Separating these classes also limits what a broad realtime subscription can reveal. A viewer who needs a vehicle’s current position does not necessarily need access to identity-linked delivery evidence or a complete dispatch audit history.

Treat replay as a bounded recovery mechanism, not as the only way a client can reconstruct the map. A reconnecting client usually needs the current state and only enough recent events to bridge from that state to the live stream. Older history can use a separate query path with its own authorization, priority, and resource limits.

- Authenticate and authorize. Check the principal, map or tenant, requested event classes, and permitted replay age on the server.
- Return a current snapshot. Include the map state the client needs to resume, such as the last known vehicle locations.
- Resume from an accepted cursor. Replay only if the cursor is valid and within the retained window.
- Recover from an expired or reset cursor. Send a fresh snapshot instead of attempting unbounded replay.
- Apply events idempotently. A client should tolerate duplicate delivery without applying the same change twice.
Keep a stable event identifier for deduplication and a separate stream position or revision for replay. A replay identifier is not necessarily a sequence number: Salesforce documents that its Replay IDs are opaque, may not be contiguous, and must not be calculated from another ID. Salesforce also notes that Replay IDs may not be unique during certain maintenance activity and recommends event IDs to identify platform events uniquely. These are Salesforce-specific behaviors, but they illustrate why clients should not increment an opaque cursor to invent a later position.
Salesforce says its Pub/Sub API stores platform events and change-data-capture events for 72 hours. Events may sometimes remain longer, but Salesforce does not guarantee storage beyond that period. That is a Salesforce platform limit, not a general recommendation for delivery-map retention.

How do you budget a replay window?
Estimate retained storage using event rate, encoded event size, retention duration, indexes, replication, and compression. Also measure replay bytes, reconnect frequency, and how long clients take to return to live state under your own workload.

A bounded replay and current snapshot limit how much old transient state must be resent, but no particular window guarantees that replay will avoid overload. Validate replay limits against expected reconnect bursts and live delivery load. If older history serves investigation or analysis, route it through a separately authorized, lower-priority query path so it does not compete without limit with live map updates.
What should a replay token authorize?
A replay grant should be narrow enough to express who can receive which events, for which map, and for how long. As an application design, it can carry or reference:

- The authenticated subject.
- The map or tenant.
- The permitted event classes.
- An expiry time.
- A maximum replay age.
These fields are a design recommendation, not a standardized claim set. The server must validate the authenticated principal and token audience, then enforce map, tenant, event-class, and requested-time constraints before returning events. RFC 8725 requires audience validation in the described multi-recipient JWT setting. Do not treat a browser-provided map ID or scope list as authorization.

DPoP can strengthen token use, but it does not replace application checks for map, tenant, event class, or replay age. RFC 9449 states: “The resource server MUST NOT grant access to the resource unless all checks are successful.”

Authorize at subscription time and again for replay requests. Avoid putting bearer credentials in client-visible URLs when the transport permits a safer authenticated header. A Wanderer Team example of SSE map events warns against exposing map API tokens in client-side code, while its native EventSource example uses a query parameter—an implementation constraint that requires care, not a reason to treat a visible URL token as safe.

No. A transport moves data; it does not set the application’s retention schedule or decide who may replay it. Wanderer Team’s 2025-06-21 documentation describes SSE backfill and webhooks for its map-events implementation. The W3C WebRTC specification defines browser communication APIs, not a delivery-map retention policy. Choose retention, authorization, and recovery behavior at the application and storage layers regardless of transport.
What to evaluate before setting the policy
- How long each event remains operationally useful.
- Whether reconnecting clients need every intermediate update or only current state.
- Storage, replay-read, network egress, and reconnect load at expected event rates and fan-out.
- Sensitivity of location and identity data, including audience restrictions, token expiry, and revocation needs.
- Whether dispatch changes or proof records must support an audit, contract, or legal dispute.
- Whether older history can be served through a slower, separately authorized path.
Make expiration and deletion observable to operators. Keep durable audit records outside the transient cursor stream, and ensure the replay authorization routine rejects expired grants, mismatched tenants or maps, unpermitted event classes, and requests beyond the grant’s maximum replay age before fetching events.
