How sensitive data reaches an LLM context

What the Cleaner proposes
The design applies sanitization at two points in the data flow. One examines input before dispatch to a model provider; the other controls the data returned from tools to the model. The aim is to give the model only the information needed for its task, rather than treating access to a full backend record as a reason to include every field in context.

Mask selected data before sending a request
The article’s ingress example configures maskPII and names emails, phone numbers, IBAN/BIC details, and EU NIR/SPI as masking examples. It also configures detectPromptInjection and maxTokenBudget. These are settings shown in the author’s example, not evidence that all sensitive data or prompt injections will be detected. Teams would need to establish which data types their implementation recognizes and how it behaves on missed or incorrectly flagged content.
Return a minimal result to the model
At the tool boundary, the article proposes returning a minimum data-transfer object (DTO) to the model. Its invoice example retains an invoice ID, status, and total amount while excluding a tax identifier. A separate client path can provide the full record to the user interface when the application needs to display it. Separating these paths helps avoid sending display-only fields to the model merely because the application retrieved them.

Enforce authorization in application code
The example also uses dataAccessGuard to compare a requested tenant ID with the authenticated context before a tool runs. This illustrates an important division of responsibility: application code should enforce authorization deterministically. A model’s instructions or judgment are not a substitute for checking that the authenticated user is permitted to access the requested tenant’s data.
How to assess the approach in an application
Treat sanitization as one part of data-flow design, not as proof that an agent cannot leak information. Before adopting a layer like the one described, map what enters model requests and tool results, define what each task actually needs, and test the enforcement points.

- Trace the flow: identify which fields are retrieved, which reach the model provider, which remain available to later tools, and which are sent to the client.
- Choose explicit field allowlists: shape each model-facing tool result around the task. Do not depend on a model to ignore fields that the application has already supplied.
- Test masking behavior: verify the data types and formats the detector handles, along with false positives and missed values in representative inputs.
- Check authorization separately: test cross-tenant and unauthorized requests at the application boundary, including cases where a tool receives a manipulated tenant identifier.
- Review the complete lifecycle: consider tool chaining, logs, retries, provider requests, and user-facing responses. The described ingress and tool-result controls do not establish comprehensive output review or protection of every other path.
- Measure the implementation you deploy: record latency and detection outcomes under your workload instead of assuming figures from an article apply to your system.
What is and is not established
The linked avantGate repository’s implementation, detector coverage, release status, and security properties are not independently verified in the available evidence. The article provides no independent penetration test, comparative performance study, or measured false-positive or false-negative rate. Its examples demonstrate a proposed pattern; they do not establish that every PII type or prompt injection will be caught, that secrets cannot be reconstructed, or that the whole agent lifecycle is protected.
BUI claims that a multi-container scanning cluster adds 250 ms per turn and that the in-process approach avoids an extra network hop. The 250 ms figure is the author’s claim in the 2026 article; no measurement method or independent benchmark is given, so it should not be treated as a general performance result.

Keep similarly named tools distinct
In the title-matched article, “The Cleaner” is the author’s name for an in-process sanitization layer illustrated through the avantGate project. It is not the separate ContextClean browser-based utility for shortening debugging logs. That utility itself warns that automated detection can miss secrets and recommends manual review before sharing. StackOne Defender is also a separate project: its repository describes tool-result prompt-injection defense that returns a sanitization result and an allow/block decision, and calls cleaning best-effort. Neither product provides evidence that the proposed avantGate implementation has the same behavior or guarantees.
