Homebrew’s most useful power-user commands help you see what is installed, preview changes, record dependencies and manage services with the right permissions. These ten workflows use Homebrew’s rolling command reference; check the current syntax and package availability before relying on a command in a script.
1. Inspect your installed packages before making changes
Start with an inventory before cleaning up, upgrading or moving to another Mac. Homebrew’s command reference documents listings for installed formulae and casks, as well as installed-package information.

brew list
brew list --cask
brew info --installed
The first command lists installed formulae; the second lists installed casks. Use brew info --installed for information about installed packages, including size reporting where available. Check the current Homebrew command reference for supported options and output details.

brew upgrade --dry-run
A dry run previews what Homebrew would upgrade at that moment. It is not a promise that the same packages will still be eligible when you run an actual upgrade later; package state and available versions can change.
3. Record your setup in a Brewfile
A Brewfile turns a collection of Homebrew dependencies into a manifest you can keep with your dotfiles or project setup. From the directory where you want the file, run:
brew bundle dump
The resulting Brewfile can record formulae, casks, taps and other dependencies supported by Homebrew Bundle. Review the file before sharing it: it describes software sources and packages as well as command-line tools. See the official Homebrew Bundle and Brewfile guide for manifest behavior and options.

4. Rebuild a recorded setup on another Mac
With a Brewfile in the current directory, install its declared dependencies using:
brew bundle install
This installs the dependencies listed in the manifest, helping recreate a recorded Homebrew setup. It does not guarantee that every package will be available forever or that applications and services outside the manifest will be configured identically.
5. Check dependencies before a script or handoff
Use Bundle’s check command to verify whether the dependencies declared in the Brewfile are present:

A successful exit status makes it useful as a prerequisite check in scripts. To see which dependencies are missing, request verbose output:

6. Preview cleanup instead of guessing
Homebrew can remove old formula versions and stale cached downloads. Preview the proposed removals first:

brew cleanup --dry-run
The dry run lists what cleanup would remove without removing it. Homebrew documents 120 days as the default age threshold for cached files; that setting is configurable, so the default is not a universal retention rule. For background on old-version removal and periodic cleanup, consult the Homebrew FAQ.
7. Start services with the right scope
brew services manages supported services through macOS launchctl. Starting a service registers it to launch at login in user scope, or at boot in system scope when invoked with sudo.
brew services start <formula>
sudo brew services start <formula>
Replace <formula> with the service-providing formula you intend to run. The first command uses the logged-in user’s scope; the second requests system scope and elevated privileges. Choose deliberately: system registration affects boot-level service management, not just your login session. Homebrew notes that some casks and system services may require elevated privileges, even though ordinary formula installation generally does not after initial setup. See the command reference for service subcommands and options.

8. Choose a formula or cask based on the software
Homebrew uses different package types for different kinds of software. Formulae are generally for open-source command-line software and libraries; casks cover native macOS applications and supported binary-only software. A cask is not simply a more convenient spelling for every formula. Check the package’s type and details before installing, especially when you need a GUI app rather than a command-line tool. Homebrew explains the distinction in Adding Software to Homebrew.
9. Treat third-party taps as a trust decision
A tap is an additional source of Homebrew package definitions. Packages from non-official taps therefore involve trusting another maintainer and source, not merely choosing a different install command. Homebrew requires explicit trust by default for non-official taps; do not grant that trust automatically. Inspect the source and its maintainers before adding it.
If you use Brewfile cleanup to reset the global tap trust store to the declarations in a Brewfile, understand that this changes which taps are trusted beyond one package installation. The official tap maintenance guide discusses tap trust; the command reference documents Bundle commands and options.

10. Recheck Homebrew after a macOS upgrade
A macOS upgrade can replace or invalidate Command Line Tools and libraries that formulae depend on. If builds or installs begin failing after an OS change, work through Homebrew’s Common Issues guidance rather than assuming that every package needs reinstalling. Homebrew’s documentation is rolling, so verify troubleshooting commands and options against the current command reference.
Know which Homebrew prefix your Mac uses
Homebrew’s installer uses /opt/homebrew by default on Apple Silicon Macs and /usr/local on Intel Macs. This matters when checking shell configuration, diagnosing which brew executable is being used, or comparing instructions written for different Mac architectures. Homebrew says its installer explains what it will do and asks for confirmation before starting; some casks and system services can still need elevated privileges. See the official Installation documentation.
