Yes, an AI agent can run on a 6GB Ubuntu server, but that does not mean every part of the agent stack will fit comfortably or perform well. Six gigabytes is above Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS amd64’s suggested minimum of 3GB, but that baseline covers the operating system—not a local language model, tools, and other services together. Ollama lists smaller model downloads such as Llama 3.2 1B at 1.3GB and 3B at 2.0GB; those are file sizes, not guarantees of runtime memory use. The diary below is therefore a practical framework for recording what changes from day to day, not a claim that a particular server was tested.
What “6GB is enough” actually means
Ubuntu Server’s requirements page for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64 gives 1.5GB as the minimum for an ISO installation and 1GB for a cloud image, then lists “Suggested minimum RAM: 3 GB or more.” Ubuntu describes that as an installation baseline; it does not establish how much headroom an AI agent needs. Storage is also workload-dependent, although Ubuntu suggests 25GB or more for a useful installation. Ubuntu Server system requirements

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For an agent, the useful question is not simply whether the system boots. It is whether the operating system, model runtime, agent framework, tools, and other active services leave enough available memory for the intended task without excessive swapping or failure. That answer depends on the machine and workload, so a diary should record observations rather than treat 6GB as a universal pass/fail threshold.

Which small model can I run locally?
Ollama’s quickstart lists these model download sizes. They describe downloads, not total memory consumption after a model is loaded or used:
| Model in Ollama’s quickstart | Listed download size |
|---|---|
| Llama 3.2 1B | 1.3GB |
| Gemma 2 2B | 1.6GB |
| Llama 3.2 3B | 2.0GB |
| Phi 3 Mini | 2.3GB |
| Llama 3.1 8B | 4.7GB |
These are candidates to evaluate on the actual server, not a promise that each will run smoothly alongside an agent and its services. In the same quickstart, Ollama recommends at least 8GB of RAM for 7B models, 16GB for 13B models, and 32GB for 33B models. That makes a 6GB machine a constrained choice for local inference, particularly for larger models or a busy stack. Model listings and runtime recommendations can change; check the documentation for the installed release. Ollama quickstart

How much RAM does Ollama need?
There is no single RAM figure that applies to every model, context size, and request load. Ollama’s FAQ says memory needs scale with the number of parallel requests multiplied by the context length. It documents a default context window of 4096 tokens and describes OLLAMA_KEEP_ALIVE as the setting that controls how long models stay loaded in memory. These are mutable project-documentation details, so verify them against the Ollama version in use. Ollama FAQ
In a diary, record the configured context length and parallel request count beside memory observations. If either changes between entries, a memory difference cannot safely be attributed to the agent’s behavior alone. Also note whether a model remained loaded: a warm model and a model loaded on demand do not describe the same runtime state.

A daily diary that separates observation from explanation
Use one consistent record per test day. Keeping the task and configuration stable makes comparisons more useful; when something changes, identify that change rather than presenting the entries as a controlled benchmark.
Record the machine and software
- Date and actual Ubuntu release.
- Server make and model, CPU, available RAM, and storage.
- Agent framework and version; model, runtime, and versions.
- Whether inference is local or remote, and the model quantization if known.
- Context length, parallel request count, and whether the model was kept loaded.
- Services and tools active during the task.
Record the run, not just the result
- Task attempted and the result observed.
- Memory and swap observations, along with when they were taken.
- Response time only if measured, and the measurement method.
- Failures, configuration changes, and differences from the prior entry.
Label estimates as estimates. Keep measured observations separate from explanations or hypotheses—for example, a rise in memory use after increasing context is an observation; attributing all of that rise to context requires evidence that other relevant conditions stayed comparable.

What changes when context or parallel requests grow?
A longer context gives a request more room for input and conversation history, but it also changes the memory demands described in Ollama’s FAQ. More parallel requests likewise increase the demand. On a 6GB server, increasing both at once makes it harder to identify which setting caused pressure and leaves less room for the operating system and other services.

When a remote model changes the picture
If local inference is unstable or too slow for the task, a hosted model is an architectural alternative: inference then happens remotely rather than consuming the server’s local model runtime resources. That changes the privacy and data-handling story as well as the resource profile. A diary using a remote API should identify it clearly; local-model memory observations cannot be presented as evidence about remote inference.
No specific provider, price, or service is established here. The choice depends on the task, connectivity, privacy requirements, and the provider’s terms.
What a 6GB diary can—and cannot—show
A well-kept diary can show whether a particular combination of Ubuntu release, hardware, runtime, model, context, concurrency, and active services handled a particular task. It cannot, without repeatable comparable runs, establish that one model is generally faster or better, or that every 6GB server will behave the same way. Record exact versions and conditions before drawing those conclusions.
