1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClean foam headphone ear pads according to the care instructions for the exact headphone model: manufacturers differ on whether to use a dry cloth, a damp cloth, or—in limited cases—hand-wash a detached pad. Use as little moisture as the instructions allow, keep liquid away from the headphone’s openings and electronics, and let any washable pad dry completely before putting it back. If a pad is worn or remains soiled, check for a compatible replacement rather than trying stronger cleaners.
Why the headphone model matters
“Foam ear pad” does not describe one uniform material or construction. A pad may have a fabric, leather, or synthetic covering, and it may attach with clips, a ring, or another model-specific fitting. The cleaning method for one design may damage another. Start with the current manual or care page for your exact model before using water, soap, wipes, or disinfectant.

Manufacturers’ directions illustrate the difference. beyerdynamic recommends a soft damp cloth and water only for the headphones covered by its guidance, and says not to use a vacuum. Sennheiser’s general care guidance, updated April 6, 2026, instead says to use a clean dry cloth, avoid solvents, and not soak headphones. These are not interchangeable universal recipes.
How to clean ear pads safely
- Identify the model and check its instructions. Confirm whether the pad is removable and whether the maker permits moisture or washing. Do not infer permission from another brand’s advice.
- Prepare the headphones as directed. Turn them off or disconnect them if the manual says to. Keep liquid away from openings, drivers, microphones, and electronics.
- Use only the specified cloth and moisture level. If the instructions call for dry wiping, use a clean, soft, dry cloth. If they permit a damp cloth, moisten the cloth—not the headphone—and wipe gently. Avoid soaking the assembled headset.
- Remove a pad only when instructed. Follow the model’s removal and reattachment procedure; clips, rings, orientation, and left/right fit vary.
- Dry and refit only as the instructions allow. If the maker explicitly permits washing a detached pad, follow its specified method and wait until the pad is fully dry before reinstalling it.
When is washing allowed?
Washing is an exception that must be authorized for the specific product. JBL’s instructions for the Under Armour Project Rock over-ear training headphones say the pads can be removed and hand-washed, not machine-washed, and must dry fully before reattachment. That permission applies to the named model.

Sennheiser says some pads can be washed after removal, but directs users to the product manual for the applicable method. Its HMx 27 manual warns that liquids can damage the product and calls for cleaning with a soft dry cloth. For the M3, the instructions distinguish materials: use a soft dry cloth on non-leather parts; for leather, a clean soft cloth dampened with water is allowed, while leather polish, detergents, and harsh soaps are discouraged. Check the applicable Sennheiser product documentation rather than applying one model’s directions to another.
What cleaners and tools should you avoid?
- Solvents and unapproved cleaners: Sennheiser warns against solvents, and model instructions may also warn that liquids or cleansing agents can harm surfaces or electronics. Do not use alcohol, disinfectant, soap, or household cleaner unless the exact model’s official instructions permit it.
- Directly applied liquid: Put any permitted moisture on the cloth, not on the ear cup. Do not let liquid run into the housing.
- Vacuuming: beyerdynamic says not to use a vacuum on the ear pads covered by its care guidance.
- Machine washing: JBL specifically says not to machine-wash the Project Rock pads. Do not assume a removable pad is machine-washable.
Sony gives a different, model-specific procedure for the WH-1000XM6: wipe sweat or moisture with 99% water-based wipes, avoid solvents such as thinner, benzene, or alcohol, and remove pads only when necessary using its procedure. That instruction is not a general recommendation for other foam pads.

When to replace ear pads
Replacement is sensible when a pad is worn, damaged, or persistently soiled after cleaning permitted by its maker. Cushion construction and replacement intervals differ, so use a part compatible with the exact headphone model and follow its fitting instructions. Some replacement sets include foam disks as well as the outer cushions; beyerdynamic describes this for specified models in its replacement instructions.

Sennheiser’s HMx 27 manual advises yearly pad replacement for that headset. A 2023 3M technical data sheet for the PELTOR WS LiteCom Pro III recommends replacing covered foam liners and ear cushions at least twice a year when that equipment is regularly used. Those recommendations apply to their named equipment, not to all headphones. For compatible PELTOR gear, the sheet also names HY100A hygiene pads.
