Livestream shopping is likely to become a lasting part of eCommerce, but it is not poised to replace ordinary online stores. Its strongest use is helping shoppers discover and understand products through live demonstrations, questions, and creator-led presentations, then making purchase straightforward. Adoption and results vary by market and category, and a durable program takes more than occasional broadcasts.
How livestream shopping works
A seller or creator presents products in a live video. Viewers can watch demonstrations, ask questions in real time, and—if the platform and local checkout support it—browse or buy featured items without leaving the stream. McKinsey defines the format as a shopping experience that enables real-time product purchasing and interaction with a host during a live video event (McKinsey).

The shopping path depends on the service. TikTok Shop, for example, lets viewers browse and purchase products from a TikTok LIVE; Shopify documents that merchants can fulfill those orders through Shopify admin (Shopify’s TikTok Shop setup guide). Elsewhere, a stream may send viewers to a separate product page, adding a step between interest and checkout.
Is livestream shopping the future of eCommerce?
It is part of eCommerce’s future, not the whole future. Live video can make online shopping more interactive and useful for products that benefit from a demonstration or expert explanation. It can also give shoppers a direct route to ask questions before buying. But current evidence does not establish that livestreams will displace product pages, search, marketplaces, or other familiar ways of shopping online.

The scale of the format differs sharply across markets. In a survey fielded by McKinsey in August–September 2022, 57% of surveyed Chinese live-commerce users said they had used the format for more than three years. The corresponding shares were 5–7% among live-commerce users in the United States, Europe, and Latin America. “Europe” in that survey covered France, Germany, Poland, and the UK. These figures describe how long surveyed users had used live commerce—not the percentage of each region’s population that shops this way or the share of retail sales it represents (McKinsey).
There is also substantial activity on TikTok Shop in the United States, but the figures need their platform context. TikTok reported that brands and creators hosted more than 8 million hours of LIVE shopping sessions in the US during 2024. It also cited GlobalData research saying 76% of consumers who had engaged with TikTok Shop bought something from a livestream in the prior year. That percentage is about engaged TikTok Shop users, not all consumers or all livestream viewers, and it is not an independently measured conversion rate. TikTok separately reported US TikTok Shop sales growth of 120% compared with the same period a year earlier; that increase was not attributed solely to livestream sales (TikTok).
Where live shopping can help—and where it may not
Useful for discovery and demonstration
A live presentation can show how a product looks, works, or fits into a routine. Viewers can ask about features as they see them, while hosts can explain details that are difficult to convey in a short product description. This can suit tutorials, expert or creator Q&A, product launches, and deal-led events.

Live commerce is not equally suited to every item. NielsenIQ’s 2026 commerce report describes Western performance as category-specific and notes strong investment and performance in beauty and fashion on TikTok. That supports testing where demonstration and presentation matter; it does not mean every retailer or product category should adopt live selling (NielsenIQ).
Trust and checkout shape conversion
Interest during a stream does not guarantee a purchase. McKinsey notes that in some countries checkout is unavailable within social-shopping channels, which can lengthen the path to purchase (McKinsey). NielsenIQ identifies lower platform trust and less developed commerce infrastructure as barriers in Western markets (NielsenIQ). Shoppers still need confidence in the seller, product information, payment, returns, and support.
It takes ongoing content work
A livestream is a production and customer-service task: someone must plan the presentation, host it, answer questions, moderate comments, and handle what follows. NielsenIQ argues for integrating behind-the-scenes content, owner or founder participation, and a broader commerce-content funnel rather than depending on isolated live events (NielsenIQ). A business that cannot sustain useful programming may find a one-off event difficult to build on.

There is no universal best platform. Choose based on the audience you can reach and the purchase path you can reliably support. Platform features and eligibility vary by geography and can change, so confirm current terms and availability before committing.

For merchants using Shopify, its documentation describes TikTok Shop options including LIVE shopping, shoppable in-feed videos, and a product showcase on the merchant’s profile. Shopify also describes YouTube Shopping product tagging and names live-shopping app integrations including LiveMeUp and TalkShopLive (Shopify sales channels; Shopify’s virtual-shopping guide). These are examples of available paths, not a guarantee that every feature or integration is available to every seller in every region.
What equipment do you need to start?
You can begin with a modern phone rather than a dedicated camera setup. Shopify identifies a phone as a possible camera and lists audio, lighting, and streaming software as practical setup considerations. TikTok Shop’s US seller education guide lists USB or lavalier microphones, cameras, and tripods as equipment options (Shopify’s virtual-shopping guide; TikTok Shop seller guide).
- Use a stable phone mount or tripod so the product stays in frame.
- Choose a well-lit space; add lighting if the room or product appears unclear on camera.
- Use a microphone if the room is noisy or the presenter’s voice is difficult to hear.
- Consider streaming software only if the platform or production needs call for it.
These are aids, not prerequisites for every seller. Clear presentation and useful answers matter more than buying equipment before you know whether your audience will watch.
Quick Recap
How to decide whether to test live selling
- Start with a shopper need. Pick products people benefit from seeing demonstrated, comparing, or discussing with an informed host.
- Choose the audience and purchase route. Select a platform where your customers already spend time, then check whether checkout and order fulfillment work for your region and systems.
- Plan a useful program. Build the stream around demonstrations, questions, a launch, or a promotion rather than simply displaying products.
- Review the full operating cost. Include preparation, hosting, moderation, production, fulfillment, and follow-up—not just the time spent on camera.
- Judge results against your alternatives. Track whether the event drives meaningful sales and repeat behavior relative to that total effort. Do not treat platform-wide activity or a single event’s views as proof of a sustainable business result.
