If Wi-Fi is faster than Ethernet on your computer, the wired connection may be limited by a cable, router port, Ethernet adapter, or computer setting. A speed test can also make the difference look bigger if the two connections were tested under different conditions. Check the test setup first, then isolate the cable, port, network equipment, and PC in that order.
Make the speed comparison fair
Test Wi-Fi and Ethernet on the same computer, using the same speed-test service and server where possible. Pause large downloads and cloud backups, and repeat each test more than once. These are practical controls, not a prescribed Microsoft testing protocol. Microsoft notes that computer resources and external conditions—including a busy website—can affect measured or perceived internet speed: Why is my Internet connection so slow?

Wi-Fi placement, obstructions, and nearby devices can affect wireless performance, so a result taken at a different location or time may not be a clean comparison. A single test also cannot identify which part of the Ethernet path is limiting the connection.
Check the Ethernet cable and router port
- Reseat the cable. Unplug and firmly reconnect it at both the computer and router.
- Check the router socket. Connect the computer to a LAN Ethernet port, not the Internet or WAN port used to connect the router to the modem.
- Try another LAN port. If the router has more than one, repeat the test on a different one. A changed result is useful evidence, but one port swap alone does not prove the router is faulty.
- Swap the cable. Use a known-good Ethernet cable if one is available. Microsoft Support advises: “If one Ethernet cable doesn’t work and you have another one nearby, try the other Ethernet cable to see if that works.” Fix Ethernet connection problems in Windows.
If a cable swap improves the result repeatedly, the original cable or its termination is a plausible cause. If it does not, continue testing rather than assuming a new cable will help.

Find out whether the problem follows the PC or the network
Connect another computer to the same router with Ethernet, if possible. If both wired devices have trouble, look next at the cable, router, modem, or ISP. If the second computer works normally, focus on the original computer and its Ethernet adapter or software. Repeated results on a second device are more informative than a single speed test.
Restarting the modem and router can establish a new ISP connection. This temporarily disconnects everyone using the Wi-Fi network. Microsoft includes a modem/router restart and testing with another PC among its Windows Ethernet troubleshooting steps: Microsoft’s Ethernet troubleshooting guidance.

Check the computer and Ethernet adapter
On Windows, begin with the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Review Ethernet status in Settings, and check the computer or adapter maker’s instructions for driver updates and how to view the reported link speed. Treat that link rate as a clue about the connection between the computer and router, not a diagnosis of internet speed by itself.

Microsoft’s troubleshooting article covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. It states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. If you use another operating system, follow its network troubleshooting instructions and your adapter maker’s guidance.

A USB-to-Ethernet adapter is relevant if your computer has no Ethernet port or you are checking whether an existing adapter is the weak link. Match the adapter to the computer’s USB or USB-C interface and to the speed supported by the computer and router. An adapter is not a guaranteed speed fix.

If multiple wired devices remain slow after you have checked the cable and ports and restarted the modem and router, consult your ISP’s outage information or contact its support team. If Ethernet trouble affects only one computer, keep investigating that computer’s adapter and network configuration first. If only one app or website seems slow, the issue may be outside your home wired connection; busy sites and other external conditions can affect performance.
