Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by opening YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and reading the exact, timestamped message beside the stream-health indicator. “Encoder error” can mean the encoder cannot authenticate or start, or that YouTube is receiving a stream but rejecting one of its settings. Follow the wording YouTube shows rather than changing every setting at once.
First, identify when the error happens
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, select the stream, and inspect the message beside its health indicator. YouTube’s messages include timestamps and can remain visible until the underlying issue is corrected. The wording is more useful than the broad label “encoder error”; for example, YouTube may identify incorrect video settings or a connection problem. The dashboard’s red and yellow indicators denote different severity levels, but prioritize the specific message, which may vary with localization or interface changes. YouTube’s live-stream error messages explain the categories.

- The encoder will not start or YouTube does not receive the stream: check the stream key and how Livepush is connected to the channel.
- The stream is reaching YouTube, but health is poor: change the setting named in the warning, such as codec, bitrate, audio, video, or keyframes.
- The local preview looks and sounds correct, but YouTube reports a connection issue: investigate the outbound connection and, if applicable, RTMPS configuration.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API also reports statuses such as active, created, error, inactive, and ready, along with health states such as good, ok, bad, and noData. These are diagnostic states, not explanations on their own; use the associated issue description to decide what to change. See the Live Streaming API reference.
If Livepush cannot start the stream
Refresh and verify the YouTube stream key
YouTube’s first recommended fix for a third-party encoder that will not start is to get a current stream key in Live Control Room, copy it into the encoder, and try again. Make sure the key belongs to the active stream event. If you authenticate to YouTube from inside third-party software instead of entering a key, YouTube directs you to that software’s support team. Follow YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps.

Check which Livepush connection method you used
Livepush setup can use a linked Google/YouTube account or a manually entered YouTube RTMP key. The checks differ:
- Linked account: confirm the channel is still linked, select the intended channel and live event, then save the destination. If the channel became unlinked, reconnect it and save again.
- Manual key: verify that the key was copied accurately and belongs to the active event. With this setup, events must be configured individually; an old event’s key may not work for the current one.
Livepush describes these approaches in its linked-channel setup guide and manual RTMP-key setup guide.
If YouTube receives the stream but flags its settings
Use the specific warning as the checklist. Change the named setting in the encoder or Livepush configuration, then check stream health again. YouTube’s ingest guidance and API error categories cover the following common issues.

Format, codec, or container
YouTube’s standard ingest configuration expects H.264 video and AAC audio. It can flag unsupported audio or video codecs, an unsuitable container, or mismatched profiles. Confirm the output format and codec in the encoder rather than assuming a file that plays locally is valid for live ingest. The error guide and API issue list describe these configuration problems.
Bitrate and resolution
For a fixed-resolution stream, YouTube says the bitrate should match the value for the resolution selected in its encoder settings. Check the current recommended value for that resolution in Live Control Room or YouTube’s encoder settings; do not apply a bitrate copied from a different resolution. If your available outbound bandwidth cannot sustain the selected resolution, lower the resolution and set the corresponding bitrate. YouTube’s error guide recommends an audio bitrate of 128 Kbps; use its current encoder-settings table for the video bitrate rather than guessing.
Audio streams and channels
The ingest should contain exactly one audio stream. YouTube identifies missing audio, multiple audio streams, and more than two audio channels as possible errors; its guidance supports one or two channels. Check that the encoder is not outputting an unintended second audio track or multichannel configuration.

Video stream, scan type, frame rate, and resolution
Use one video stream, match the resolution selected in Ingestion Settings, and send progressive rather than interlaced video. YouTube may flag missing or multiple video streams, interlaced output, excessive frame rate, or a resolution mismatch. If the warning names a particular property, correct that property instead of lowering quality indiscriminately.
Keyframes and GOP
YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of two seconds; at 30 fps, that is one keyframe every 60 frames. A keyframe interval that is too long or short, an open GOP, or an unsuitable GOP length can cause a warning. Match the keyframe interval to the stream’s frame rate and the value YouTube requests. Do not confuse “60 frames” with a universal setting: it corresponds to two seconds only at 30 fps.
Primary and backup streams
If you have configured failover streams, their settings need to match. YouTube identifies codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe frequency, audio sample rate, and channel configuration as settings to align between primary and backup feeds.

If the preview is fine, check the connection
Inspect the encoder preview, CPU load or logs, and a local recording if available. These can help distinguish an encoder that is producing poor output from a stream that looks correct before it leaves your setup. If audio and video look healthy locally but YouTube reports a connection issue, test outbound internet connectivity; YouTube advises contacting your internet provider if the test points to a connection problem. The documentation does not establish one speed threshold that applies to every stream.
RTMPS, SSL errors, and timeouts
For an RTMPS SSL error, check both the protocol and server address against the current Live Control Room event. Use rtmps, not rtmp, when the event specifies RTMPS. For some SSL errors, YouTube says port 443 may help. If the error is a timeout, verify the server URL and that the encoder supports RTMPS. Use the URL and key for the active event, not values saved from an earlier stream. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.

| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder fails before the stream starts | Stream key or account integration | Copy a current key from Live Control Room, update the encoder, and verify the Livepush connection method. |
| YouTube names a codec, format, or profile | Encoder output configuration | Check H.264 video, AAC audio, container, and profile against the warning and YouTube’s ingest guidance. |
| Warning identifies bitrate or resolution | Selected resolution and its matching bitrate | Use the current YouTube value for that resolution, or reduce resolution if the connection cannot carry it. |
| Warning mentions missing or multiple audio/video | Track count or audio channels | Configure one audio stream and one video stream; use one or two audio channels. |
| Warning mentions keyframes or GOP | Keyframe interval, frame rate, or GOP mode | Use YouTube’s two-second keyframe recommendation, match frame count to frame rate, and avoid open GOP. |
| Preview is healthy but YouTube reports connection failure | Outbound connection, RTMPS protocol, server URL, or encoder support | Test the connection, verify the event’s RTMPS address and key, and confirm encoder RTMPS support. |
Copyright and channel checks are separate from encoder errors
A stream-health warning about encoding is not the same as a copyright or channel-policy issue. If your stream contains music, video, or other material you did not create, check that you have the necessary rights; correcting bitrate or codec does not resolve a rights claim. YouTube’s copyright safety checklist can help review prerecorded material before streaming. Keep the exact warning in view so a policy notice is not mistaken for an encoder configuration problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you repeatedly loop prerecorded videos and want to avoid managing a local encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the loop running, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start your free day.
