Entrepreneurs can use live video to teach, demonstrate a product, answer customer questions, and build relationships. Start with the platform your audience already uses, the simplest setup that suits the event, and a clear plan for what viewers will learn. A livestream can support marketing, but it does not guarantee leads or sales; track your own results.
Choose the platform and format for the event
First decide where your audience is and what the event needs: an informal phone update, a desk-based Q&A, a produced demonstration, or a scheduled professional event. YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows; LinkedIn Live is for eligible Pages and creators, requires a third-party broadcaster, and currently requires advance event scheduling. Check the current rules before announcing a date: YouTube’s live streaming options and LinkedIn’s Live Events guidance.

| Format | Good fit | Trade-offs to consider |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube mobile | Quick updates, informal field video, or a simple demonstration | Simple phone workflow, but mobile eligibility requirements apply. Vertical and horizontal streams differ in discovery and available features; vertical streams can surface in the Shorts feed. |
| YouTube webcam | Desk-based talks, Q&As, and simple presentations | Fast computer workflow; test the stream and your audio before the event. |
| YouTube encoder | Interviews, overlays, screen sharing, and more produced demonstrations | More production control, with more setup and technical checks. |
| LinkedIn Live Event | Professional-audience launches, presentations, fireside chats, and Q&As | Eligibility applies; a third-party broadcaster is required, and events must be scheduled. Registration can help with follow-up but adds a step for attendees. |
Confirm you can go live before promoting
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its current guidance says creators must be at least 16 to live stream. LinkedIn allows only qualified Pages and creators to broadcast. Its Help guidance says spontaneous Live broadcasting ended June 22, 2026: schedule an event in advance, though scheduling shortly before going live is possible. Requirements and product features can change, so verify them in your account before setting expectations with viewers.

LinkedIn’s current Getting Started page recommends creating an event two to four weeks ahead and sending at least 10 invitations. Those are platform recommendations, not universal thresholds for attendance or success. LinkedIn’s 2022 Live Events Playbook claimed 7x more reactions and 24x more comments compared with regular video; those are LinkedIn-published engagement comparisons, not independent evidence or a promise of leads or sales. See the LinkedIn Live Events Playbook and check eligibility in the event-creation flow rather than relying on older static criteria.

What equipment do you need to start?
For a straightforward talk or Q&A, begin with a phone or computer webcam, the microphone you already have, stable internet, and enough light to make your face or product easy to see. YouTube’s advice is direct: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” An external USB microphone for live streaming is an optional desk-stream upgrade if clearer speech solves a real problem; it is not a prerequisite.
- Phone: useful for quick updates and demonstrations where mobility matters. Stabilize it and check framing before starting.
- Webcam or built-in camera: sufficient for many desk-based presentations. Position the camera near eye level and keep the background intentional.
- Microphone: prioritize clear, consistent speech. Test levels and listen for room echo or background noise.
- Lighting: face a window or use a lamp in front of you rather than placing a bright window behind you.
- Encoder setup: use it when you need scenes, overlays, guests, or more involved screen sharing—not simply because it looks more professional.
YouTube recommends testing a live stream rather than discovering framing, sound, or connection problems in front of an audience. Its live streaming tips cover the basic workflow and testing.

Plan the event so viewers know why to stay
Choose one useful promise
Build the event around one audience problem or question. Make the promised takeaway concrete, such as showing how to choose a product size, explaining a common setup mistake, or answering the five questions customers ask before booking. A focused promise is easier to promote and deliver than a broad “ask me anything” with no scope.
Recommended Free Tools
Write a short run of show
- Opening: state who the session is for and what viewers will leave knowing.
- Core teaching: explain the issue in a few clear points, with examples from your work where appropriate.
- Demonstration or guest segment: show the process or product if it helps answer the central question.
- Audience questions: reserve a visible portion of the session for questions rather than hoping time remains at the end.
- Close: name one relevant next step, resource, or way to continue the conversation.
Promote where your audience already follows you
Share the event through the channels your customers or professional audience already use. For LinkedIn, its current guidance recommends setting up the event two to four weeks ahead and inviting people; treat this as LinkedIn-specific advice, not a timetable every business must follow. Make the event description useful: include the audience problem, what will be covered, and whether there will be a Q&A.

Rehearse and check the setup
Run an unlisted or otherwise low-stakes rehearsal. Check the event page as well as the broadcast itself: a working camera does not ensure that the audience can find or access the event.
- Check framing, lighting, microphone position, and listening levels.
- Test internet stability and power; avoid relying on a nearly depleted phone or laptop battery.
- Open any slides, screen shares, product pages, and promised links in advance.
- Confirm the event description, visibility, registration settings if used, and the audience-facing link.
- Ask someone else to join the rehearsal from a phone or watch page and report what they can hear and see.
Extra lead time for YouTube encoder streams
For an encoder workflow, YouTube advises setting up at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the planned start. Check the Live Control Room preview, verify access on mobile and watch pages, and monitor audio and video quality before going live. Those steps matter more when a stream depends on scenes, overlays, guests, or screen sharing.

Host the livestream with deliberate interaction
Start with the audience benefit, then tell viewers how to participate—for example, invite them to leave a question in chat and say when you will answer it. Keep the opening concise. LinkedIn’s content guidance advises against making viewers wait more than one or two minutes on a “starting soon” screen.
- Ask specific questions that viewers can answer, rather than relying on a general “Any questions?”
- Acknowledge useful comments and repeat a question briefly before answering so later arrivals can follow.
- Use a moderator if you are presenting, interviewing, or demonstrating and cannot monitor chat reliably.
- Keep product mentions relevant to the lesson and proportionate. LinkedIn’s Live guidance discourages promotional streams and recommends keeping sponsor graphics small.
- For LinkedIn, the platform recommends streams longer than 15 minutes and ending after one to two hours. Treat these as LinkedIn recommendations, not proven minimums or guarantees of engagement.
Follow up and reuse the useful parts
After the event, retain or publish the replay where the platform and your settings allow. Send any resource you promised, and follow up with registrants or attendees where that is appropriate. LinkedIn’s Live Events guide recommends reusing downloaded recordings when the broadcaster permits it.

Common livestream problems and fixes
- Viewers cannot access the stream: confirm the event is public or that the intended audience has access, and check the audience-facing link from another device. Recheck account eligibility and platform restrictions before the event.
- Audio is hard to hear or distorted: move the microphone closer, reduce background noise, and repeat the rehearsal while monitoring from another device.
- The picture is dim or distracting: move the light in front of you, simplify the background, and check the preview rather than judging from the camera position alone.
- Screen share, slides, or links fail: open them before the event and rehearse switching between them. Keep the relevant URLs ready to share in chat.
- Encoder stream is not ready at start time: allow the recommended YouTube setup lead time, start the encoder at least 15 minutes early, and confirm the Live Control Room preview and viewing access.
- Chat distracts from the presentation: recruit a moderator or schedule a distinct Q&A segment so interaction does not derail the main teaching point.
Protect your content and audience trust
Use material you own or have permission to show, including music, clips, slides, and product imagery. Check platform policies and any rights that apply before broadcasting; a live event can still create copyright issues. On LinkedIn, keep the content professional and genuinely live, and review its current Live guidelines before promoting an event. Avoid implying that a stream will produce a particular sales result: assess whether it helped your audience and business by comparing your own events and follow-up actions.
