For a video already uploaded, YouTube Studio offers blur tools—not a documented way to replace the background. A full replacement requires editing the footage separately and uploading the finished video.
Change the background while recording a new Short
- Open the YouTube app and start creating a Short.
- On the recording screen, tap Green screen.
- Select a photo or video from your device gallery.
- Record with that background, finish any other edits, and publish when ready.
YouTube’s documented workflow lets you use existing gallery media, so you do not need a physical green screen for this method. The control’s exact placement and availability can vary by device and app version. YouTube’s Shorts help page describes the gallery-background workflow.

Use an AI-generated background in a Short
YouTube also documents AI-generated backgrounds for Shorts: create a background and use it as a Green screen background while recording. These controls are optional, and availability can differ by feature, region, and language. Check the current YouTube app to see whether the option is available to you. What you can change after a video is uploaded
In YouTube Studio, you can obscure parts of an existing video with Face blur or Custom blur. To find these tools, sign in to Studio, open Content, select the video, then choose Editor > Blur. Choose Face blur or Custom blur.

Custom blur lets you position and resize the blur, choose its shape, set when it appears, and either track an object or keep the blur in one position. These tools conceal an area; they do not place a different scene behind the subject. YouTube’s Studio navigation guide lists editor functions such as trimming, end screens, audio tracks, and blur, but not background replacement. Preview before saving
Review the result carefully before confirming a Studio edit. YouTube’s current guidance says a saved edit cannot be reverted to the original pre-edited state through the editor. Some unedited videos with over 100,000 views may also be ineligible for changes other than face blur, except for channels in the YouTube Partner Program. Check the current eligibility information and preview the change before saving. YouTube’s preview and review guidance explains the review process.

Replace the background in footage you already recorded
For a true scene replacement, edit the video in a separate editor before uploading it. If your footage has no clean separation between the subject and the background, use an editor with subject masking or background removal, or record again against a suitable backdrop. If the footage was shot against a green screen, a chroma-key tool can remove the green and composite a separate background behind the subject. Shotcut’s guide to chroma key describes this compositing approach.

Understand the upload trade-off
You cannot replace an uploaded YouTube video with a new file while keeping its existing URL. If you edit the video externally and upload the result, YouTube creates a new upload with a new URL. Plan for that change before removing or directing viewers away from the original. See YouTube’s guidance on replacing or deleting a video.
