Live streaming moves through four distinct stages: a camera or other source produces audio and video; an encoder compresses and packages it; the encoded feed travels to a platform’s ingest server; and the platform prepares and delivers versions viewers can watch. Bitrate is one setting within that process—not a guarantee of quality. The right value depends on codec, resolution, frame rate, platform guidance, and how reliably your connection can upload the feed.
How a live stream gets from its source to a viewer
A live stream is not one unbroken signal sent unchanged from a camera to every viewer. It passes through several stages, and the creator’s outgoing feed is not necessarily the same format or bitrate a viewer receives.
- Source: A camera, screen capture, or audio/video mixer creates the material.
- Encoding: An encoder compresses and packages that material using selected codecs and settings, including resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
- Ingest: The encoder sends the outgoing feed to a platform’s ingest endpoint using a supported protocol.
- Transcoding: The platform may create alternate versions at different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates.
- Delivery: The platform distributes a suitable version to each viewer over its delivery infrastructure.
These stages are related but not interchangeable. YouTube says it automatically creates multiple output formats for viewers. Whether viewers can choose among those versions depends on the platform and its playback behavior. The OBS Project’s 2021 explanation uses “transcoding” for turning one source feed into feeds with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates.
Encoding, bitrate, transcoding, and delivery are different things
| Term | What it means | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding | Compressing and packaging source audio and video using a codec and selected output settings. | Usually happens before the feed reaches the platform. |
| Bitrate | The rate at which encoded data is produced, commonly expressed in bits per second. | Affects the upload capacity the feed needs and can affect the quality of the encoded picture and sound. |
| Transcoding | Creating alternate versions of a feed, such as different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates. | Often happens on the platform side so viewers with different devices or connections can be served appropriately. |
| Delivery | Distributing a suitable output from the platform to viewers. | The viewer-facing stage, which may use different infrastructure and protocols from the creator’s ingest connection. |
For example, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API overview, last updated September 30, 2026, describes one possible workflow: accept SRT or RTMP input, transcode it to HLS or DASH, save output to Cloud Storage, and serve it through Media CDN. That is an example architecture, not a requirement for every streaming platform.

What bitrate should you use for a live stream?
Use the target platform’s recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate, then confirm that your upload connection can sustain the outgoing feed. A bitrate number by itself cannot promise a particular picture quality: codec efficiency, motion in the scene, output resolution and frame rate, and connection stability all matter. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these recommended video bitrates:
| Output | AV1 or H.265 | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for every platform or streaming setup. YouTube also lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Audio settings are separate from the video bitrate figures in the table.

Make the setting work with your connection
The connection must carry the outgoing stream consistently, not merely reach a high speed in a brief test. If your available upload capacity fluctuates around the stream’s data rate, the encoder may struggle to send frames steadily. Choose a platform-supported setting that your connection can sustain and test under conditions similar to the actual broadcast. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health.
Fast movement and detailed scenes are harder to compress cleanly than a mostly static shot. If the picture looks poor despite a stable connection, check that the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate are appropriate together rather than increasing bitrate in isolation.

Which encoder settings matter on YouTube?
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds; it says not to exceed four seconds. A keyframe is a complete reference frame from which later frames can be reconstructed. The interval affects how the encoded stream is organized and must follow the receiving platform’s guidance.
- Codec: YouTube’s recommendations differ for AV1, H.265, and H.264, so use the row and codec that match your encoder output.
- Resolution and frame rate: Choose the output you intend to deliver; YouTube’s bitrate guidance changes with these settings.
- Bitrate mode: YouTube lists CBR for the encoder settings covered by its guidance.
- Keyframes: Use a two-second interval as YouTube recommends and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio.
- Stream health: Test a representative scene and audio setup, then watch the platform’s stream-health indicators during the broadcast.
Do not treat these YouTube settings as a universal preset: other platforms and ingest workflows can specify different requirements.

What are RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH?
These names refer to protocols or delivery formats used at different points in streaming workflows. Support and trade-offs vary by platform. YouTube’s protocol comparison, last updated September 14, 2026, lists RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingest.
| Option | Practical distinction | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | A commonly used streaming protocol that YouTube supports for third-party ingest. | Check whether the encoder and platform support it and whether its latency characteristics meet your needs. |
| RTMPS | RTMP sent over an encrypted connection. | YouTube recommends streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to the popular RTMP protocol. |
| HLS | A segment-based streaming format. YouTube lists it as an ingest option and supports additional codecs useful in some high-resolution workflows. | Segment-based operation typically adds latency compared with RTMP. For YouTube HLS ingest, the API guide specifies media segments of 1–4 seconds; shorter segments may reduce latency but can increase rebuffering and lower encoding efficiency. The guide excerpt does not show a publication date. |
| DASH | A segment-based streaming format that YouTube lists for ingest and Google Cloud describes as an output option. | Assess platform support, codec needs, and latency goals for the specific workflow. |
RTMPS protects the connection in transit; it does not change the meaning of bitrate or guarantee a better-looking stream. When choosing among protocols, consider the platform’s support, the encoder’s capabilities, encryption needs, codec support, upload demand, and acceptable end-to-end latency.

Why can a live stream buffer?
Buffering happens during viewer playback when the player cannot receive or decode media quickly enough to continue smoothly. That is not automatically the same problem as a creator’s upload or ingest failure. Transcoding and delivery introduce additional stages between the outgoing feed and a viewer’s device.
- The outgoing feed is unstable: The encoder’s connection may not sustain its configured bitrate. Check the encoder and platform’s stream-health information and test the connection under broadcast-like conditions.
- The viewer’s connection is constrained: A viewer may not have enough capacity for the version being played. Platforms that create alternate renditions can adapt delivery to different devices and connections, but the available behavior varies by service.
- The chosen format adds latency: Segment-based HLS or DASH workflows typically add latency compared with RTMP. Latency is delay, not the same thing as buffering, though both relate to delivery behavior.
- A setting does not match the receiving platform: Check codec, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and protocol against the platform’s current guidance.
To narrow down a problem, compare what the encoder reports with what the platform reports for ingest, then check whether the issue affects the broadcast feed or only particular viewers. Avoid changing several settings at once; test one adjustment with the same representative scene.
YouTube delivery is separate from permission to stream the material
Encoding and delivery settings do not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in a broadcast. Before streaming, make sure you are entitled to use the content and follow YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules. A technically healthy feed can still raise a separate rights or policy issue.
Keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running continuously
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, a cloud service can handle the ongoing playback rather than requiring a home computer to remain on. StreamNeo is one option for this specific YouTube use case: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
StreamNeo keeps uploaded material as made, up to 4K at 60 fps, with no re-encode and one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
