For a clearer laptop webcam picture, clean and uncover the lens, put soft light in front of your face, and check the camera settings in both your operating system and video-call app. Compare the picture in a camera preview with the one in your call: if only the call looks poor, the app or network may be the issue. Consider an external USB webcam only if these steps do not meet your needs.
Fix the most common picture problems first
- Clean and uncover the lens. Gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth. Check for a privacy shutter, sticker, dust, or anything else blocking the camera. A dirty or obstructed lens can make the image look poor; Apple recommends a soft, lint-free cloth, and Microsoft lists a dirty or blocked lens among possible causes of camera problems. Apple’s Mac camera guidance and Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guide explain these checks.
- Put light in front of you. Face a window or lamp so light falls on your face. Avoid sitting with a bright window or lamp behind you, which can leave your face dark. Apple recommends front lighting and avoiding strong backlighting; Logitech also identifies better lighting as a way to improve webcam image quality. See Apple’s guidance and Logitech’s webcam image-quality tips.
- Check the camera preview and controls. Confirm that the intended camera is selected, then inspect any available image-quality controls in your system and call app. The names and options vary by device.
- Compare another app before changing hardware. If the picture looks clear in the operating system’s camera preview but poor in a meeting, check the meeting app’s camera selection and settings. Call quality can also be affected by the network.
These checks address different causes: a lens obstruction, poor lighting, a selected-camera or settings issue, and call conditions are not the same problem. Changing camera settings will not remove a physical obstruction, and buying a new camera is unlikely to solve poor lighting or an unstable call.

Adjust camera settings in Windows 11
Inspect the camera in Settings
Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Cameras, select the connected camera, and look at its preview and available controls. Depending on the camera and Windows version, options may include brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, Windows Studio Effects, or Video HDR. You may not see every control, and some video apps apply their own adjustments. Microsoft describes the capability-dependent options in its Windows 11 camera settings guide.
Use the Camera app to isolate the problem
Open the Windows Camera app, select the camera you intend to use, and check its preview and available video-quality or flicker-reduction settings. If the image looks good there but not in a call, check that the call app is using the same camera and inspect its video settings. The Microsoft Camera app guide explains camera selection and the app’s settings.

If the preview itself is blurry or low quality after cleaning the lens and improving the light, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide lists low resolution and a dirty or damaged lens among possible causes. If the problem appears only during calls, compare another app and consider network conditions before concluding that the camera hardware is at fault. See Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting steps.
Improve the camera picture on a Mac
Clean the camera with a soft, lint-free cloth, face a light source, and avoid strong backlighting. Then check the camera selection and video controls in the app you use for calls; app-specific settings can affect the picture. Apple also recommends improving Wi-Fi if the video call itself is poor. Its Mac camera guidance covers these steps.

Use Edge Light if your Mac supports it
Edge Light uses the Mac display to illuminate your face in low light. Apple says it is available with macOS 26.2 or later on Mac computers with Apple silicon, so it is not a general option for every Mac. If the feature is unavailable on your computer, improve the lighting in the room instead.

Tell a camera issue from a call-quality issue
Use a preview in a second app as a simple diagnostic. If the image is poor in both the system camera preview and the video-call app, check the lens, lighting, selected camera, and available system controls. If the preview is clear but the call looks poor, check the call app’s selected camera and video settings, then consider the connection. Microsoft lists network issues during calls as a possible cause of poor video, and Apple recommends improving Wi-Fi when a Mac video call is poor.

Add a light only if your room needs one
If you cannot get suitable front lighting from a window or existing lamp, a desk lamp or webcam light may help. Position it to light your face without shining directly into your eyes. A dedicated ring light is not required if your existing light already gives you a clear, evenly lit picture.

Consider an external webcam only after basic checks
An external USB webcam is an option if the built-in camera remains inadequate for your needs after you have checked lighting, the lens, and software settings. Before choosing one, verify supported resolution, whether autofocus is available, and compatibility with your operating system and video apps. Judge image quality under lighting similar to your own: a resolution label alone does not establish how a camera will look in your room. Logitech’s video-call tips mention external webcams, but they are vendor guidance, not an independent model comparison. The cited guidance does not establish that every external camera will improve every laptop’s picture or identify a best model.
