A small business can start livestreaming with a phone or computer, a reliable internet connection, and a clear plan. On YouTube, choose mobile for a quick update, webcam for a simple computer-based broadcast, or an encoder when you need overlays or external production equipment. Test the picture, sound, lighting, and connection before inviting customers to watch.
Choose a livestream format that fits the event
YouTube offers three main ways to go live. The right one depends on whether you need mobility, production control, or a particular viewing experience—not on buying the most equipment.

| Method | Best suited to | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile | Quick updates or broadcasts where you need to move around | Check framing and sound in the location where you will stream. |
| Webcam | A direct broadcast from a computer | A practical choice for a fixed setup without a separate encoder workflow. |
| Encoder | Overlays, connected production equipment, or a more controlled production | Prepare the encoder before the event, preview the stream, and monitor audio and video quality. |
YouTube also distinguishes vertical and horizontal livestreams, including differences in discovery and available features. Choose the orientation around how viewers will watch and which YouTube features you need. Do not assume that a format’s availability or discovery behavior applies to other platforms.

For YouTube Live, the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. These are YouTube-specific requirements; confirm the current rules in YouTube’s live-streaming help before the event, since platform requirements can change.

Prepare a basic setup without overspending
YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started: “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Begin with equipment you already have, then address specific problems revealed by a test rather than buying gear speculatively.
- Camera and framing: Use the phone, webcam, or camera available to you. Check that the subject and any product being demonstrated are visible.
- Audio: Make a test recording or private stream and listen back. A microphone is an optional upgrade if the built-in audio is not adequate; it is not a required purchase. YouTube lists microphones and preamps as possible equipment for an encoder setup.
- Lighting: Check how the presenter and products look on camera, then adjust the existing lights or position as needed.
- Connection: Test from the place you will broadcast. A reliable connection matters more than choosing expensive equipment.
For an encoder-based production, YouTube recommends preparing the encoder ahead of time, previewing the stream, and monitoring sound and video quality during the broadcast. Exact encoder settings depend on the equipment and workflow you choose; use the relevant encoder’s instructions rather than assuming one preset fits every setup.

Plan the broadcast and test it
- Decide what viewers should get from the event. Choose a focused purpose, such as demonstrating a product, answering customer questions, or sharing a business update.
- Choose mobile, webcam, or encoder. Match the method to the location and production needs described above.
- Schedule the livestream and share its URL. Give customers notice and tell them when to join.
- Collect questions in advance. Use them to plan the discussion and avoid relying on live chat alone.
- Run a private test stream. Check the internet connection, camera framing, audio capture, and lighting, as recommended in the YouTube live-streaming checklist.
- Assign chat and comment duties. Decide who will watch for questions and whether moderation settings are needed. If you are broadcasting alone, plan how you will balance presenting with reading comments.
- Preview and monitor the event. For an encoder setup, verify the preview and keep an eye on audio and video quality once live.
Handle sponsorships and product claims responsibly
If a livestream includes an endorsement or paid promotion, make the material connection clear in language viewers can understand. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises repeating a livestream disclosure periodically so people who join late or watch only part of the broadcast see it. Depending on the arrangement, plain terms such as “ad,” “advertisement,” or “sponsored” may be appropriate. Do not assume a platform’s built-in label alone is enough.

FTC guidance is U.S.-specific; businesses elsewhere should check the advertising and disclosure rules that apply in their jurisdictions. The FTC also says advertising claims must be truthful, not deceptive or unfair, and evidence-based. An endorsement should reflect the speaker’s honest experience or opinion: do not claim to have tried a product if you have not, invent results, or present an unsupported performance claim as fact. See the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers and Advertising and Marketing guidance.
Troubleshoot common livestream problems
- The channel cannot go live: Check that the channel is verified and whether it has had a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. Consult YouTube’s current eligibility information.
- Viewers cannot hear clearly: Test audio capture before the event and check the selected microphone or audio input. Consider an optional microphone upgrade only if testing shows a need.
- The picture is hard to see: Recheck framing and lighting in a private test, from the same location and orientation you plan to use.
- The stream is unstable: Test the internet connection where you will broadcast. For an encoder event, preview the stream and monitor audio and video rather than waiting for viewers to report a problem.
- Questions go unanswered: Assign someone to monitor comments or set expectations for when questions will be addressed; use moderation settings if appropriate.
- A sponsor disclosure is easy to miss: Repeat it periodically during the livestream so it reaches viewers who arrive later.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your business wants a prerecorded YouTube video to keep streaming continuously rather than a live presentation from a camera, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Uploaded quality streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. This is for prerecorded video on YouTube, not a camera-based live broadcast. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
