What’s actually slowing this PC down?

When a game loses publisher support, you may keep its offline campaign—or lose access to the entire game. The difference is not simply whether it is called a live-service or single-player game. It depends on what runs on your device, what requires a publisher or platform server, how the game authenticates, and where it stores your saves.
What happens when a game’s support ends?
There is no universal outcome. A publisher can shut down only selected online features, preserve an offline version, or take a game offline in a way that makes it inaccessible. The game’s server dependencies and any announced end-of-life plan matter more than its label or genre.

Ubisoft’s The Crew and The Crew 2 illustrate two different outcomes: the first became inaccessible after its servers shut down; the second has an offline mode that retains core play but excludes online features.

The Crew: the shutdown ended access
On December 14, 2023, Ubisoft announced that The Crew would be delisted and remain playable until March 31, 2024. Ubisoft said that after the server shutdown, the game would no longer be accessible on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, or Ubisoft+. The company cited server-infrastructure and licensing constraints. This was not merely the loss of matchmaking: access to the game itself ended. Ubisoft’s announcement

The Crew 2: offline play remains, with limits
In patch notes dated October 20, 2025, Ubisoft described a selectable Offline Mode for The Crew 2. Core exploration, events, vehicles, and customization remain available offline. Summits, Live Battle, leaderboards, ghosts, user-generated content, the Far & Beyond Shop, and community features do not. Offline progression is saved locally. Ubisoft’s patch notes

Ubisoft also warns that creating a fresh save from the most recent online progression after reconnecting replaces progress made offline. The offline mode therefore preserves substantial play, but not every system—and switching between online and offline saves requires care.

What to check before buying or relying on a game
Check these details for the specific game, platform, and edition. A “single-player” label, physical disc, or offline setting alone does not establish that a game will launch or remain playable without publisher support.

- Launch and authentication: Does the game start without an internet connection? Does it need a publisher account, online license check, or server authentication even for solo play?
- Server role: Do servers provide only optional services such as leaderboards, or do they handle saving, validation, world simulation, or access to the game itself?
- Offline content: Which campaigns, maps, events, characters, and customization options are available without a connection? What disappears?
- Save ownership: Is progress stored locally, in the cloud, on an account, or across separate online and offline saves? Could reconnecting or syncing overwrite progress?
- Installation and updates: Can the game be installed from the disc or preserved files, or does it need a download, update, or online activation? A disc is not by itself proof that an offline installation will work.
- End-of-life plan: Has the publisher specifically announced an offline conversion, self-hosting, or another preservation path? Treat an intention or community project as distinct from a guaranteed, supported way to play.
- Edition, region, and terms: Requirements can differ by platform, country, edition, account status, and license terms. Verify the version you actually own or plan to buy.
Why a platform’s Offline Mode may not be enough
Steam describes Offline Mode as useful when internet access is limited or unavailable, but cautions that some games cannot start in that mode. The platform setting cannot remove a game’s own authentication, launch, or server requirements. Check the game’s requirements and test its offline launch path while support and access are still available. Steam Support: Offline Mode
A service shutdown is not always a game shutdown
Ubisoft’s October 2023 notice about decommissioning older games says that, in the listed cases, some online functions may be retired while purchased games remain playable. That is evidence that a shutdown can be limited to particular services; it is not a promise about every Ubisoft title, platform, or publisher. Ubisoft: decommissioning online services for older games

In practice, distinguish the end of multiplayer or community functions from the end of access to the game. Look for a title-specific notice that says what is being disabled and whether an offline mode will remain.
What the EU policy discussion does—and does not—establish
In its June 16, 2026 response to the Stop Destroying Videogames European Citizens’ Initiative, the European Commission said that a proposed EU-wide legal act requiring publishers to keep games playable after commercial exploitation, as requested by the initiative, would not be proportionate. The Commission described existing EU consumer-law safeguards concerning transparency, conformity, and remedies, and said it intended to explore a possible self-regulatory code with industry stakeholders. It characterized the issue by saying that discontinuing publisher support can make a game “partially or entirely unusable.” European Commission response to the initiative

This is the Commission’s position in an EU policy document, not a universal account of consumer law or a ruling on an individual purchase. It does not mean every game loses access after support ends.
How to judge what you will keep
For any particular title, the useful question is not simply “Is it online?” Ask which parts depend on servers, what remains playable offline, how saves behave, and whether the publisher has specified what happens at shutdown. If those details have not been established for your edition, do not assume that a purchase—physical or digital—guarantees permanent access.
