It lets you compose using an image derived from the camera’s sensor rather than looking through an optical viewfinder.
What does live preview mean on a camera?
When live preview is active, the camera feeds an electronic image of the scene to its LCD screen or electronic viewfinder (EVF). Nikon describes mirrorless cameras as directing light to the image sensor, which then supplies a live image to the EVF or rear screen. The displayed view updates as the scene changes, so you can frame a shot before pressing the shutter. Nikon explains the sensor-to-display path for mirrorless cameras.

How is live preview different from an optical viewfinder?
An optical viewfinder lets you see the scene optically through the camera. Live preview instead presents an electronic image on a screen or EVF. The distinction is about how you view and compose the scene; it does not mean every camera handles its preview, autofocus, or other behavior identically.

Does the preview show the exact photo you will get?
Not necessarily. Live preview is useful for judging framing, and some cameras and settings also show the effect of exposure adjustments. Whether the display simulates those adjustments depends on the camera and its active settings.

For example, OM Digital Solutions documents that on the Olympus E-3, exposure-compensation changes appear in Live View when Live View Boost is off. With Live View Boost on, the display brightens automatically, so those changes are not shown in the preview. This model-specific example is a reason not to assume that the screen always reproduces the final exposure, color, depth of field, or image quality exactly. See the Olympus E-3 Live View guidance.
Can live preview appear on a phone?
Yes. The term can also refer to a remote view of a connected camera in a mobile app. GoPro uses “Live Preview” for the connected camera’s view shown on a phone in Quik. This can help you frame a shot when the camera is mounted somewhere you cannot easily see its own display. When is live preview useful?
- Composing a photo: Frame the scene on the camera’s screen or EVF before capture.
- Checking an adjustment: Use the display to assess changes when your camera and current settings represent them in the preview.
- Framing a hard-to-see camera: If the camera supports remote preview, view its feed in the connected app instead.
