A widget is a small dashboard you choose to keep in a particular place. A Live Activity is a temporary progress card that stays visible while an event or task is underway. Both can show glanceable information and offer limited interactions, but they differ in who places them, how long they last, where iPhone presents them, and how their data is updated.
The short answer
Think of a widget as a dashboard and a Live Activity as a tracking card. You add a widget to Today View, the Home Screen, or the Lock Screen when you want recurring information from an app to remain available. An app starts a Live Activity for something that is currently happening, such as a delivery, sports event, route, or workout; iPhone then presents it on the Lock Screen and, on supported models, in the Dynamic Island.

That is a difference in purpose and lifecycle, not merely a difference in size or appearance. A Live Activity is not just a widget squeezed into the Dynamic Island. Widgets use WidgetKit’s timeline model, while Live Activities have their own ActivityKit lifecycle and update mechanism.
Widget and Live Activity compared
| Question | Widget | Live Activity |
|---|---|---|
| What is it for? | Recurring, glanceable app information and selected quick actions. | Following the progress of an ongoing event, task, or activity. |
| Who puts it there? | You add it to a supported widget area. | The app starts it; the system chooses the appropriate presentation. |
| Where can it appear? | Today View, Home Screen, or Lock Screen. | Lock Screen and, on iPhones that support it, the Dynamic Island. |
| How is it refreshed? | Through WidgetKit timeline-based updates. | Through ActivityKit updates, with optional ActivityKit push notifications. |
| How long does it last? | It can remain in the location you selected as an ongoing dashboard. | It is associated with an active event or task and ends when that activity is over. |
| Typical examples | Weather, headlines, reminders, and battery levels. | Delivery progress, live sports, directions, and workout status. |
The locations and examples in this table come from Apple’s widget and Live Activity documentation: Apple’s iPhone widget guide, Apple’s Lock Screen guide, and Apple’s ActivityKit presentation guidance.

What an iPhone widget is
Apple describes widgets as an easy way to view current information from an app at a glance, including “today’s headlines, weather, reminders, battery levels, and more.” A widget is an app-provided surface that you elect to place where you want it. It can be useful every day, even when no particular event is in progress.
You choose the location
On iPhone, widgets can be placed in three main areas:
- Today View: a dedicated area for scanning widgets without rearranging your Home Screen.
- Home Screen: a widget can sit alongside your app icons for information you want visible during normal use.
- Lock Screen: compatible widgets can put information in view before you unlock the phone.
The important point is that placement is user-controlled. You select a widget and a supported size or location through iPhone’s widget interface, then leave it there until you edit or remove it. Apple’s step-by-step controls are documented in Add, edit, and remove widgets on iPhone.

A widget can continue to act as a small dashboard for an indefinite period. A weather widget remains useful tomorrow; a reminders widget remains useful after one reminder is completed. Its content changes according to the app’s timeline updates rather than because a single tracked event has started.
Widgets can be interactive
It is inaccurate to call widgets static. A widget may expose a quick action, such as checking off a reminder, in addition to showing information. Tapping a widget can also open its app. The exact actions depend on what the app supports, and an interactive widget is still a user-placed panel rather than an automatically surfaced event tracker.
What a Live Activity is
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines define the feature this way: “A Live Activity lets people track the progress of an activity, event, or task at a glance.” The wording emphasizes progress. A Live Activity is appropriate when something has started, has a meaningful current state, and will eventually finish or stop.
Examples of an active event
- A food delivery moving from preparation to pickup to arrival.
- A live sports match showing the current score or phase of play.
- Turn-by-turn directions while you are following a route.
- A workout displaying an in-progress session and relevant controls.
These are examples of situations Live Activities are designed to represent, not a guarantee that every app in those categories offers one.

The app starts it; iPhone presents it
You do not add a Live Activity to a Home Screen grid. The app starts a Live Activity when its event begins, and iOS determines the appropriate presentation. The Lock Screen is a supported presentation. On an iPhone with a Dynamic Island, the system may also show the activity there. Apple’s developer documentation explains that presentation is system-managed, so a Live Activity should not be treated as a permanently reserved spot controlled by the user.
It has a defined lifespan
Live Activities are intended for frequent updates over a period of a few hours, while an activity is underway. They can remain visible as the state changes, then end when the delivery arrives, the match finishes, the route is complete, or the workout stops. That temporary lifecycle is the central contrast with a widget that can remain as part of your chosen layout.
Live Activities can be interactive too
A Live Activity can provide quick interactions related to the event, such as workout controls. Tapping it can open the associated app for more detail. Therefore, “widgets are static and Live Activities are interactive” is the wrong test. Both may display information and both may offer actions; the distinguishing question is whether the surface represents a continuing dashboard or an event in progress.
Why the food-delivery example clarifies the difference
Imagine that a delivery app supports both features. Its widget might show general account or order information that is useful whenever you check the app. You place that widget on the Home Screen or Lock Screen and it stays there until you remove it.
When you place a particular order, the app could start a Live Activity for that order. The Live Activity might move through stages such as preparation, pickup, and arrival, giving you a current progress view on the Lock Screen and, where supported, in the Dynamic Island. When the order is complete, the activity’s reason for existing is over. The widget and Live Activity can coexist because they solve different problems: one is a reusable dashboard, the other is a temporary tracker.
This example describes the design distinction only. App support is decided by each developer; do not assume that every delivery service supplies both a widget and a Live Activity.
How their update systems differ
Widgets use timelines
WidgetKit widgets receive content through timeline-based updates. The app supplies entries for the widget to display, and the system manages when those entries are shown. This approach suits information that changes periodically or can be planned in advance, such as a forecast, a headline set, a reminder state, or a battery reading.

A timeline update does not mean the widget is tracking a single event second by second. It is the mechanism for refreshing the continuing surface you chose to keep visible.
Live Activities use ActivityKit
Live Activities use ActivityKit, which gives them a separate lifecycle and update path. While an activity is active, the app can send state changes through ActivityKit. Apps may also use ActivityKit push notifications for updates delivered through Apple’s push system. This is designed for an event whose state changes during its short-lived run.
Apple documents ActivityKit as distinct from widget timelines. Both features are part of the broader WidgetKit ecosystem, but the update responsibilities and lifecycle rules are not interchangeable. A developer cannot make a normal widget behave like a Live Activity simply by changing its layout.
Update frequency is not a promise of constant alerts
A Live Activity can keep information current without repeatedly interrupting you. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines advise avoiding overly frequent or nonessential alerts. The visual surface is meant to provide useful progress at a glance; it should not become a stream of unnecessary notifications.

Widget locations
Widgets appear only in locations that support widgets and that you select: Today View, the Home Screen, or the Lock Screen. If you do not add a widget, it does not appear merely because the app has one available.

Live Activities are presented on the Lock Screen and, on supported iPhone models, in the Dynamic Island. The system chooses the presentation based on the device and the activity. Do not promise a Dynamic Island view for every iPhone: support depends on the hardware, while the Lock Screen is another supported location.
The system-managed approach also means that two users may not see an activity in exactly the same visual arrangement if their iPhones differ. The app supplies the activity’s data and presentation regions; iOS decides how that activity fits the available system surface.

How to manage them as an iPhone user
Add or edit a widget
- Open the iPhone widget interface for the location you want to customize: Today View, the Home Screen, or the Lock Screen.
- Choose the app and widget presentation offered for that location.
- Place the widget, then edit or remove it later from the same widget controls if your needs change.
Available sizes, locations, and actions vary by app. Apple’s current instructions, including the controls for adding, editing, and removing widgets, are in this iPhone Support guide.
Manage a Live Activity
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the app that started the activity.
- Tap Live Activities, when that control is available.
Apple explicitly notes that not all apps have a Live Activities setting. If the option is absent, that does not indicate a problem with your iPhone; the app may not expose a user-facing control. Apple describes this route and the Lock Screen behavior in Access features from the iPhone Lock Screen.

Choosing the right mental model
Choose a widget when you want a standing dashboard
A widget fits when the information remains useful across many sessions and is not tied to one finite event. Weather, headlines, reminders, and battery levels are natural examples. You decide where the panel lives, and it can remain there as part of your personal layout.
Expect a Live Activity when you are following progress
A Live Activity fits when you need the current state of something already in motion. Delivery stages, a match in progress, route progress, or workout status all have a beginning, changing state, and end. The app starts the activity, and iOS keeps it available in the system surfaces appropriate to your device.
Use both when the app supports both
There is no rule that says an app must choose one feature. A widget can provide the durable entry point or general information, while a Live Activity handles the temporary event. Their coexistence is useful precisely because their jobs are different.
Common misconceptions
“A Live Activity is just a larger widget”
No. They share Apple’s widget-related framework family, but Live Activities have ActivityKit lifecycle and update handling. Their system-selected presentation and event-based lifespan are architectural differences, not just visual styling.

“Widgets never change”
Widgets can refresh on their timelines and can offer actions. Their defining trait is that you place them as continuing surfaces, not that their content is frozen.
Best Value
“Every app with a widget has a Live Activity”
Feature support is optional and app-specific. An app can offer a widget without offering Live Activities, a Live Activity without a widget, both, or neither.
“Every iPhone has a Dynamic Island view”
Apple limits Dynamic Island presentations to supported iPhone models. Live Activities can also appear on the Lock Screen, and iOS selects the presentation that the device and activity support.
“A Live Activity must constantly send notifications”
ActivityKit updates can keep the progress card current, but Apple’s guidance favors useful, restrained communication rather than excessive alerts. A visible status update and an interruptive notification are not the same thing.

For developers, the choice begins with the user need rather than the visual container. A widget should represent information people may want to revisit repeatedly and place deliberately. A Live Activity should represent a bounded activity with meaningful state transitions and a clear end.
- Model the lifecycle: a Live Activity needs a start, ongoing updates, and an end state; a widget needs timeline entries for its continuing dashboard.
- Design for system surfaces: Live Activities must work on the Lock Screen and adapt to Dynamic Island presentations on supported devices rather than assuming one fixed layout.
- Keep interactions relevant: actions should help someone respond to the current context, such as controlling a workout or opening the app for more detail.
- Respect attention: frequent state changes do not justify frequent nonessential alerts. Apple’s Live Activities guidance recommends restraint.
These principles explain why the two features cannot be substituted by resizing the same view. Their data model, timing, and presentation responsibilities are different even when they are built for the same app.
Bottom line
On iPhone, a widget is a user-placed, reusable dashboard for app information. A Live Activity is an app-started, system-presented progress view for an event or task that is happening now. Widgets live in Today View, on the Home Screen, or on the Lock Screen and update through WidgetKit timelines. Live Activities use ActivityKit, appear on the Lock Screen and on supported Dynamic Island devices, and end with the activity they represent. If you remember “dashboard versus progress card,” you have the practical difference.
