Listen to Your Coding Agent Instead of Reading It: Voice and Screen-Reader Options

Options for hearing and speaking to a coding agent: VS Code's experimental Voice Mode, dictation, Claude Code's screen-reader mode and a third-party TTS extension, with the limits of each.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can have a coding agent’s replies read aloud and answer by voice today, but the setup depends on which tool you use. Visual Studio Code has an experimental Voice Mode that speaks agent responses and accepts spoken follow-ups, though it is limited by GitHub Copilot plan and organization policy. Claude Code’s terminal offers a screen-reader mode that presents output as plain, labelled, sequential text. Dictation, a third-party text-to-speech extension and editor accessibility features fill other gaps. None of these options has published evidence that listening reduces eye strain, so treat any eye-related benefit as something to judge for yourself.

Decide what you actually want to hear

“Talking to the agent” covers three different needs, and the tools that serve them are not interchangeable. Start by deciding which one you have.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • One-way read-aloud: you want the agent’s replies spoken while you keep your eyes off the screen.
  • Two-way voice: you want to speak prompts and follow-ups, and hear the answers.
  • Accessible text navigation: you want the output structured so a screen reader can move through it cleanly, with no speech synthesis from the agent itself.
Option Direction Agent replies spoken? How you give input Key requirement or limit
VS Code Voice Mode Two-way Yes, through the built-in voice setting Spoken requests, with optional hands-free follow-up Experimental; eligible individual GitHub Copilot plan; not available with Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise
VS Code dictation Input only No Speech converted to text, inserted but not submitted Platform-dependent; not available on Intel Macs, 32-bit Arm, or musl Linux such as Alpine
VS Code Accessible View and screen readers Navigation Only through your screen reader Keyboard Tested screen readers listed by VS Code: NVDA and JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS, Orca on Linux
Claude Code screen-reader mode Navigation Not stated; the page describes text output for screen readers, not speech synthesis Keyboard Requires Claude Code 2.1.181 or later
Markdown TTS extension (Visual Studio Marketplace) One-way read-aloud Yes, including Claude Code and Copilot replies, according to the listing Keyboard Third-party publisher claims; check privacy details and compatibility

VS Code Voice Mode

Voice Mode is the closest match to a spoken conversation with a coding agent. Microsoft’s documentation describes the difference from ordinary dictation this way: “Unlike dictation, which only converts speech to text, Voice Mode also reads the agent’s responses aloud and listens for follow-up requests.” The feature is experimental and may change or be removed.

Eligibility and rollout

Per the current VS Code documentation at the time of writing, Voice Mode is rolling out gradually. It requires an eligible individual GitHub Copilot plan and is not available with Copilot Business or Copilot Enterprise. An organization’s policy can turn off preview features, so a locked-down work account may not see it at all. Because rollout and plan rules change, confirm eligibility on your own account before setting up a workflow around it.

Setup steps

  1. Open VS Code settings and enable agents.voice.enabled.
  2. Open Chat or the Agents window, where Voice Mode can be started.
  3. Start Voice Mode with ⇧⌘Space on macOS, or Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows and Linux.
  4. Grant microphone permission when the operating system asks. The documentation says microphone access is needed.
  5. Adjust the voice and the output settings: agents.voice.speakResponses controls spoken replies, and agents.voice.showTranscript controls whether a transcript is displayed.

Controls worth knowing

The documentation identifies controls for selecting a voice, turning spoken replies on or off, showing a transcript, muting, and hands-free follow-up. Keeping the transcript visible is the practical choice if you need to check exact code, file paths or commands, because audio alone is easy to misremember.

What Voice Mode is not

If all you need is to hear an existing reply, you do not need the two-way loop. The documented speech settings cover the read-aloud case, but a dedicated read-aloud tool or the screen-reader route may fit better when you only want output spoken. Be clear about which of these you mean when you choose a setup.

Dictation is input, not spoken replies

VS Code’s built-in dictation converts speech to text in chat, the Agents window, editors and terminals. It does not, by itself, read the agent’s answers aloud. Start it from chat with the microphone control or ⌘I (Ctrl+I on Windows and Linux). Dictated text is inserted at the cursor and is not submitted automatically, so you still press Enter to send it.

  • 32mm speaker drivers offer an immersive listening experience with clear sound quality
  • One-touch mute/unmute with intuitive in-line control box; Using microphone, slide the button upward to unmute and enabled audio settings in your device. For USB connection, ensure the 3.5mm jack (4-pin) is fully inserted into the USB adapter. For direct 3.5mm connection, first remove the USB adapter from your device

Where the audio goes

Dictation has two processing paths, and the difference matters for privacy:

  • Desktop: on supported platforms, the default speech-recognition model is downloaded during setup and runs locally afterward. Remote workspaces use your local VS Code client for recognition.
  • VS Code for the Web: microphone audio is streamed to Microsoft’s AI voice service for cloud transcription. This path requires network access and GitHub sign-in.

Separately, if language-model transcript cleanup is enabled, the transcribed text is sent to a Copilot model for cleanup. Leave that setting off if you do not want recognized text sent for processing.

Supported desktop platforms

The documentation lists desktop model support for Windows x64 and Arm64, Apple-silicon macOS, and Linux x64 and Arm64 with glibc 2.34 or later. Desktop dictation is unavailable on Intel Macs, 32-bit Arm systems, and musl-based Linux distributions such as Alpine. For those machines, the documentation suggests the VS Code Speech extension, which also provides text-to-speech for chat responses. Confirm platform support against the current release notes before relying on it.

Screen readers and Accessible View in VS Code

If you already use a screen reader, VS Code’s established accessibility features may be a better fit than a voice agent. The documentation describes Accessible View for chat responses and terminal output, among other surfaces, along with a screen-reader-optimized mode and keyboard-accessible navigation. The tested screen readers it lists are NVDA and JAWS on Windows, VoiceOver on macOS, and Orca on Linux.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These features do not require Voice Mode, a Copilot plan that includes it, or a microphone. You can use them alongside dictation or the read-aloud options, and they keep the text itself navigable, which is useful when you need to copy an exact command.

Claude Code’s screen-reader mode

Anthropic documents a screen-reader mode for the Claude Code CLI. It converts the terminal interface to plain sequential text, with labels and cues, and removes visual embellishments. Messages and tool activity receive labels, and menus become numbered lists. The mode requires Claude Code 2.1.181 or later.

  • Persistently in a terminal: set CLAUDE_AX_SCREEN_READER=1 in the environment, for example in your shell profile
  • Persistently for Claude Code: add "axScreenReader": true to ~/.claude/settings.json

The cited page describes screen-reader-friendly output. It does not state that Claude Code itself speaks anything aloud, so you will need your screen reader, or a separate tool, to voice the text.

What is and is not established about eye strain

The official sources document features, settings and platform support. They do not include any study comparing listening with reading, measure eye strain, or report productivity or comprehension results for spoken coding-agent output. No specific figure on listening speed, eye fatigue or output comprehension is established for these tools, so any claim that listening saves your eyes should be judged on your own experience.

A practical test is to use one option for a week of real work, keep a note of when you feel eye fatigue and whether you miss details in spoken answers, and compare that with a normal text session. That gives you evidence for your own setup, which no published source currently provides.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Voice Mode will not start: check that your account is an eligible individual Copilot plan, that your organization has not disabled preview features, and that agents.voice.enabled is on.
  • No audio from the microphone: check the operating system’s microphone permission for VS Code, then select the correct input device.
  • Dictation missing on a Linux machine: confirm you are not on musl-based Linux such as Alpine, and that the system meets the glibc 2.34 requirement.
  • Dictated text does not send: this is expected. Dictation inserts text and waits for you to submit it.
  • Claude Code screen-reader mode has no effect: confirm your version is 2.1.181 or later, and check which of the three enable methods you used.

Before you change your setup, review the current VS Code, Claude Code and Marketplace pages, because feature status, plan rules, settings names and platform support are the details most likely to change.
