A liquid neural network is a recurrent model whose internal state evolves over continuous time as its inputs change. “Liquid” refers to its input-dependent internal dynamics—not to literal fluid, and not to a guarantee that the model will keep learning or behave robustly in every new situation.
What is a liquid neural network?
Liquid neural network is a broad label for a family of continuous-time recurrent models. Unlike a model defined only by updates at fixed discrete steps, a continuous-time model represents how its internal state changes over time in response to time-varying input. The MIT glossary describes the family in terms of flexible continuous-time equations and responses to new inputs.

Liquid time-constant (LTC) networks are a prominent, specific formulation within that family. The label is sometimes used broadly, so claims about a “liquid neural network” should be tied to the particular architecture and task being discussed.
What does “liquid” mean?
In an LTC network, effective time constants and internal dynamics can vary as the input changes. That input-responsive behavior gives rise to the term “liquid.” It describes how the model’s state evolves; it does not, by itself, establish continual learning, universal adaptability, or robustness to unfamiliar conditions.

How does an LTC network work?
An LTC network represents hidden-state evolution with differential equations. In the formulation described in a MIT CSAIL seminar abstract, linear first-order dynamical systems are modulated by nonlinear, interlinked gates. This lets the network’s effective time constants change with the input.
Because the model describes continuous-time dynamics, its outputs are calculated using numerical differential-equation solvers. This is different from describing the model solely as a sequence of fixed discrete layers, though it does not mean every implementation handles observations or computation in the same way.

How are CfC networks related to LTC networks?
Closed-form continuous-time (CfC) networks are a related approach, not another name for LTC. MIT CSAIL describes CfC as replacing the neuron’s differential equation with a closed-form approximation. The goal is to retain properties of liquid networks without numerical integration. The reported work examined human-activity recognition from motion sensors, simulated walker dynamics, and event-based image processing; those examples are task-specific, not proof of performance on every time-series problem. See the MIT CSAIL account of the CfC work.

What have liquid networks demonstrated?
Published examples show research systems applied to particular control and perception tasks. They should be read as evidence about those experiments—not as general performance benchmarks or safety guarantees.

- Vehicle control: MIT CSAIL reported a Neural Circuit Policy using liquid-network cells to control a self-driving vehicle with 19 control neurons. That figure describes this experimental system, not a standard size for liquid networks. Read MIT CSAIL’s account of the vehicle-control example.
- Drone navigation: MIT CSAIL reported experiments in unfamiliar environments and under changes including noise, rotation, and occlusion. The report presents research results and preliminary indications; it does not establish deployment readiness or safety under all conditions. Read MIT CSAIL’s drone-navigation report.
In a 2021 MIT News interview, lead author Ramin Hasani described the approach as “a way forward” for potential applications including robot control, natural-language processing, video processing, and time-series data. That is a statement about potential, not evidence that every listed application has been achieved. Read the MIT News interview.

The word “liquid” alone does not tell you whether a model is suitable for a particular application. Look for the specific architecture—such as LTC or CfC—and evidence tied to the task and evaluation conditions.
