Liquid AI’s approach to personal AI separates the context from the agent. Its Liquid Context layer, announced on September 23, 2026, builds and maintains an understanding of a user’s routines, preferences and needs on the device, and the agents a user chooses read that context to reason, suggest next steps and act only with permission. The layer is optimized for Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and their Hexagon NPU. That work is an announced platform collaboration and an opportunity for device makers, not a consumer product launch, and the announcement does not establish that every Snapdragon device supports it.
Liquid Context is a layer beneath the agent, not an agent
The clearest way to read Liquid AI’s design is as a division of labor. Liquid Context supplies understanding. Agents use that understanding to reason, propose actions and carry them out, but only when the user allows it. In the company’s framing, Liquid Context is not a general-purpose assistant that you talk to directly. It is the memory and context infrastructure that other agents draw on.

CEO and co-founder Ramin Hasani put the goal this way in the September 23, 2026 announcement: “Personal AI starts with understanding how you live and what you need, when you need it,” and “Liquid Context builds that understanding on your device so the agents you choose can offer more relevant help and anticipate your needs.”
How the announced design works
Liquid AI describes a sequence of five stages. The announcement gives the broad shape of each one, but not the exact implementation details.

- Permission comes first. The layer learns from device signals only with user permission. The announcement does not publish a full inventory of which signals are read.
- The layer builds an understanding. From those signals it develops a picture of routines, preferences and needs.
- The context is maintained locally. Liquid AI says permitted context is built and kept on the device, and that background context updates do not require a cloud model to process every update.
- Selected agents receive relevant context. Relevant context can be made available to the agents the user picks, including third-party agents and Liquid Agent.
- The agent works on the context. An agent may run on the device, in the cloud, or across both. It reasons, proposes next steps and takes actions only with permission.
Liquid AI’s illustrative scenarios show what this could look like in practice: rescheduling meetings when a child is sick, drafting a recap after a conference, and carrying workout context from a watch into a car. These are examples of possible experiences. They are not evidence of shipping integrations or measured results.
Liquid Context and Liquid Agent are related but different
Liquid AI’s announcement uses both names, and they are easy to confuse. Liquid Agent is an embedded agent. Liquid Context is the layer that supplies it, and any other agent, with context.

Does personal context leave the device?
The announcement supports a qualified answer, not an absolute one. Liquid AI says permitted context is built and maintained locally and that a cloud model does not have to process every background update. It also says relevant context can be shared with selected agents, including cloud agents, according to the user’s permissions. Those two statements together mean that personal context can reach an external agent when the user has allowed it. Nothing in the announcement says that no personal context ever leaves the device.

The announcement also does not include a data-flow diagram, a retention schedule, deletion controls or an independent privacy audit. Until those are published, the practical check is to review, for each agent you enable, what it is permitted to see and whether it runs in the cloud.
What is and is not established about Snapdragon and device makers
- Established: Liquid AI announced on September 23, 2026 that Liquid Context is optimized for Snapdragon processors, specifically Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU.
- Established: Device makers (OEMs) are the stated route to built-in experiences. They may evaluate Liquid Agent and adapt it.
- Not established: a specific retail device, a compatibility list, a launch date for any product, or that every Snapdragon device supports Liquid Context.
Reading the announcement as a consumer rollout would overstate what it says. For now, the collaboration is a platform and partnership story.
The fixed-compute constraint and planned improvements
In an October 8, 2026 interview with SiliconANGLE, Liquid AI COO Jeffrey Li described the core engineering problem: “The problem with devices is that you have fixed compute. You have to fit within the zero-sum compute. That means a lot of the assumptions around how harnesses today are built no longer hold at the edge.” The statement is useful because it explains why on-device personal AI differs from cloud assistants. Memory, compute and power are shared with everything else the phone or laptop is doing.

Li also described a direction for the product: “We’re building observability loops and continuous improvement loops that will improve both the model and the harness over time through natural usage.” These are the executive’s comments on planned work. They are not independently demonstrated features, and the interview does not provide measured results for them.

What remains unverified
- No independent measurement of Liquid Context’s accuracy, battery impact or latency was identified in the reviewed material.
- No adoption figures for Liquid Context itself have been published. Company-wide download or model-usage counts are not evidence of how the context layer performs.
- No independent assessment of privacy performance has been published.
- No detailed list of device signals, retention period, deletion control or supported-device list has been published.
- No consumer rollout schedule has been announced.
How to evaluate personal-context AI
These questions apply to Liquid Context and to competing personal-context systems. They come from the announced architecture and its fixed-compute constraint. They are not test results, and they can be answered as more documentation appears.
- Where is context processed and stored? Check whether the layer is maintained on the device and whether any context is shared outside it.
- Which sources are read, and what controls exist? Look for signal-level permissions and the ability to turn them off.
- What context does each agent receive? A third-party agent and a built-in agent may see very different slices of the same context.
- Do actions require approval? Confirm whether an agent can send, book or change anything without an explicit yes.
- How does the system behave within device limits? Memory, compute and power are shared, so ask how background updates are scheduled.
- What evidence supports ongoing updates and corrections? Ask how a user can see, fix or delete what the system has learned.

- LEAP was announced in July 2025 as an early-stage developer platform.
- Liquid Apollo, also announced in July 2025, is an iOS app for trying models locally. That 2025 announcement’s Android timing is historical and should not be read as current availability.
- Liquid Nanos, described in September 2025, is a model family from 350 million to 2.6 billion parameters, with specialized models for extraction, translation, retrieval-augmented question answering, math and tool calling. Liquid AI characterized performance as based on its own evaluations.
- MacPaw partnership: announced in August 2026, it combines Liquid Foundation Models with MacPaw’s Elix inference and Mnemos memory technologies for MacPaw’s Eney assistant. The companies said results were expected later in 2026. A Setapp availability is a possible future direction, not an established distribution channel.
- Lenovo Qira is a separate example of personal-context AI. Lenovo describes it as cross-device, permission-based and hybrid, with local processing prioritized. The announcement does not link Qira to Liquid AI, and there is no partnership to assume.
Liquid AI’s website lists developer documentation, fine-tuning and deployment tooling, and enterprise partnerships. It also includes testimonials from executives at Mercedes-Benz, Shopify and AMD. These are company-presented endorsements and deployment signals, not independent evaluations.
The Bottom Line
Liquid Context is best understood as a locally maintained context layer that permitted agents can use, with the Snapdragon and Hexagon NPU work positioned as a platform collaboration for device makers. The architecture is clear on paper, but the evidence for its accuracy, efficiency, privacy and availability on specific devices is still company-stated, so the claims are worth checking as product documentation appears.
