Neither Linux nor Windows Server is universally more secure or reliable. The better choice is the supported release that runs your required applications, fits your administrators’ skills, receives patches within your maintenance windows, and has a tested recovery plan. “Linux” is a family of distributions, while Windows Server support differs by release and servicing channel, so compare specific versions rather than abstract operating systems.
What this comparison can—and cannot—prove
Security and reliability are properties of a complete service: the operating system, applications, configuration, identity controls, hardware, monitoring, redundancy, operators and change process. The available evidence does not establish a neutral, controlled uptime study showing that Linux servers or Windows servers win in general. It also does not support a universal ranking based on vulnerability counts or vendor marketing.

A defensible decision therefore starts with six questions:
- Which exact distribution and release, or Windows Server release and channel, will be deployed?
- Are all required applications and hardware supported on that platform?
- How long does that release receive security updates, and what is included?
- Can the team test, approve, monitor and recover updates reliably?
- How much downtime can patching and occasional reboots consume?
- What licensing, subscription support and staff time apply to this workload?
Identify the exact platform before comparing it
Linux is a family of distributions
Linux has no single support policy. Ubuntu Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, Debian and other distributions differ in release cadence, repositories, security teams, support contracts and upgrade paths. The concrete Linux maintenance facts below are scoped to Ubuntu Server documentation and should not be generalized to every distribution.

Ubuntu separates packages into repository components, including Main, Restricted, Universe and Multiverse. Security coverage depends on the component, the release and whether an Ubuntu Pro plan is attached. A server can therefore be “running Ubuntu” while two packages on it have different support boundaries.
Windows Server has release and channel lifecycles
Microsoft describes two broad servicing channels. Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) releases are typically issued every two to three years and are described as receiving five years of mainstream support followed by five years of extended support. The Annual Channel targets faster-moving container and microservice scenarios and has a shorter lifecycle. Those are channel-level descriptions; verify the exact product lifecycle page for a deployment.
As of October 16, 2026, Microsoft lists Windows Server 2025 as the current LTSC release. Version 23H2 is listed as the latest Annual Channel release, but Microsoft states that monthly security and quality updates for Windows Server version 23H2 ended on May 12, 2026. A machine still on that release should be treated as out of support for those updates, not as a current installation.
Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 notice says Windows Server 2022 mainstream support ends October 13, 2026, followed by extended support with monthly security updates through October 14, 2031. Because those dates are time-sensitive, check Microsoft’s current lifecycle record before committing to a new build or renewal.
| Platform example | Published support position | Operational meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu LTS, packages in Main | Five years of standard security support | Confirm that each required package is in the covered component and release. |
| Ubuntu with Ubuntu Pro | Main coverage can extend to ten years; eligible Universe coverage depends on the Pro plan | Subscription scope and release eligibility must be checked, not assumed. |
| Windows Server LTSC | Microsoft’s channel overview describes five years mainstream plus five years extended support | Use the exact release lifecycle for end dates and update eligibility. |
| Windows Server 2025 | Current LTSC release listed by Microsoft as of the stated date | Confirm edition, licensing and support dates before deployment. |
| Windows Server 2022 | Mainstream support ends October 13, 2026; extended support is described through October 14, 2031 | On October 16, 2026, plan as an extended-support deployment and verify current policy. |
| Windows Server 23H2 Annual Channel | Monthly security and quality updates ended May 12, 2026 | Do not leave production systems on this release expecting further monthly fixes. |
Security: compare maintenance systems, not stereotypes
Supported software is the first security control
An operating system that no longer receives security fixes creates a known, avoidable exposure. For Windows, support depends on the release and channel. For Ubuntu, it depends on the LTS release, repository component and any Pro entitlement. Inventory every server’s exact version and support end date, including third-party agents and application runtimes.
Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy says it applies to many commercial and some consumer products sold through retail or volume licensing, and generally provides a defined timeline with at least five years of Mainstream Support plus an additional Extended Support period for some products. That policy is not a blanket promise for every Microsoft product, so the product-specific lifecycle remains authoritative.
Ubuntu’s package scope changes the answer
Ubuntu’s fixed-release security process generally backports fixes into the existing package version instead of introducing new functionality. That can reduce compatibility surprises during a security update, but it does not mean every package in every repository receives the same duration of coverage. Check whether a dependency is in Main, Restricted, Universe or Multiverse and whether your selected Ubuntu Pro plan covers it.

Ubuntu’s documented standard support is five years for Ubuntu LTS packages in Main. Ubuntu Pro can extend Main coverage to ten years, while full Pro coverage for eligible Universe packages depends on the plan and release. These are support-policy durations, not measurements of breach rates or uptime.
Windows security depends on lifecycle and configuration
Windows Server receives security and quality updates through Microsoft’s servicing process while the release remains eligible. The Annual Channel’s shorter lifecycle can be appropriate for rapidly changing container or microservice environments, but it creates more frequent upgrade decisions than LTSC. Domain configuration, update rings, application compatibility and reboot policy determine how quickly fixes reach a particular server.
Neither platform becomes secure merely by being selected. Least privilege, network segmentation, multifactor administration, secure boot where applicable, encrypted backups, vulnerability monitoring and tested recovery are platform-independent controls.
Updates, service restarts and reboots
What Ubuntu automates
Ubuntu Server documentation describes unattended-upgrades as enabled by default in its documented setup. It runs daily and applies security updates, although administrators can configure its behavior. Automatic does not mean invisible: operators must review logs, confirm that updates succeeded and define what happens when a package needs a service restart or kernel reboot.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUbuntu 24.04 documentation describes needrestart automatically restarting affected services by default. A patch can therefore alter a running service without a full machine reboot. Test this behavior with the actual workload, because a service restart can still interrupt connections or trigger failover.
What Livepatch can and cannot do
Canonical Livepatch can apply selected high- and critical-severity Linux kernel vulnerability fixes while the system is running, reducing the need for an immediate reboot. It is an Ubuntu-specific service with eligibility and plan requirements. It does not cover every kernel issue, and it does not replace ordinary kernel updates. Continue installing normal updates and schedule eventual reboots when the running kernel, drivers or other components require them.
How Windows maintenance differs operationally
Windows Server update histories and lifecycle pages identify which releases and update channels remain eligible. Administrators still need staged deployment, maintenance windows, application testing and a reboot policy. Some updates can require a restart, and cumulative servicing means a delayed patch can carry a larger change set when finally installed.

Do not compare “Linux updates daily” with “Windows updates monthly” as if cadence alone measured security. The relevant questions are whether the patch is applicable, how quickly it is tested and deployed, what services restart, and how quickly the team can recover if a change fails.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Reliability: the factors that actually decide uptime
No current neutral source establishes a general uptime advantage for either platform. Reliability is usually decided by the service architecture and operating discipline around the operating system.
Application and vendor compatibility
A perfectly patched server is not reliable if the application vendor supports only another platform, requires a specific filesystem or identity integration, or has untested drivers. Read the application’s support matrix, including database versions, backup agents, monitoring agents and hardware firmware.
Configuration and change control
Unsupported software, untested configuration changes, dependency drift and undocumented manual fixes can cause outages on either platform. Use repeatable configuration, peer review, versioned automation and a rollback plan. Keep development, staging and production close enough that a patch rehearsal is meaningful.
Monitoring and recovery
Monitoring must cover more than CPU and memory. Track application latency, failed requests, queue depth, certificate expiry, disk growth, backup completion and replication health. A reliable service has tested restoration procedures, current runbooks and a recovery-time objective that matches the business requirement.

Redundancy and maintenance windows
Clusters, load balancers, replicas and graceful drain procedures can allow updates with little or no user-visible interruption. They also add complexity and failure modes. If a single server is unavoidable, schedule a maintenance window, verify backups and rehearse recovery before applying a high-impact update.
| Reliability question | Evidence to collect | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Can the application run here? | Vendor support matrix, tested dependencies and driver compatibility | Unsupported combinations can fail regardless of operating-system reputation. |
| Can an update be reversed? | Image or snapshot process, package or cumulative-update rollback procedure | A fast, tested rollback limits outage duration. |
| Will users notice maintenance? | Service-restart behavior, reboot requirement and redundancy design | Determines the size and timing of the maintenance window. |
| Will an incident be detected? | Application-level alerts, logs, synthetic checks and escalation ownership | Shortens time to discover and contain failure. |
| Can the service be restored? | Recent backups, restore tests and documented recovery objectives | A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan. |
Maintenance burden: where teams feel the difference
Linux administration
Linux maintenance commonly involves selecting a distribution and repositories, managing packages and services, controlling permissions, reviewing logs and planning distribution upgrades. Ubuntu LTS separates routine package updates from a release upgrade. Ubuntu’s documented upgrade route may require sequential LTS upgrades rather than skipping directly across releases, so the source and target versions must be planned together.

Automation can be highly granular: you can define which repositories receive updates, which services restart and when reboots occur. That flexibility is valuable, but it places responsibility on the team to understand package dependencies, kernel changes and configuration files.
Windows Server administration
Windows Server provides Microsoft identity, management and integration tools that may reduce friction for organizations already standardized on those services. The same environment still needs update rings or maintenance windows, policy management, event-log review, application testing and lifecycle tracking. A familiar graphical workflow does not remove the need for automation and change control.
Skills are a reliability variable
A platform your team can diagnose at 2 a.m. is often safer than one that appears superior on paper. Compare actual competence in identity, networking, storage, scripting, patch orchestration, monitoring and incident response. Include contractors and on-call coverage, not just the engineers who build the initial server.

Start with non-negotiable application requirements, then choose the operating system that satisfies them with the least operational risk.
| Workload signal | Questions to ask | Decision implication |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft-specific identity or management integration | Does the application require a particular Windows Server role, directory integration or Microsoft management tool? | Windows may reduce integration effort, but confirm the supported release. |
| Open-source service with documented Linux support | Which distribution, kernel, libraries and container runtime does the vendor test? | Select that distribution and keep its repositories within support. |
| Commercial appliance or agent | Are the backup, security and monitoring agents certified for the proposed release? | An unsupported agent can become the limiting risk. |
| Container or microservice platform | How often can the team perform upgrades, and does the vendor recommend an Annual Channel or LTSC base? | Balance rapid feature access against the shorter support horizon. |
| Legacy application | Is the application still supported, and can it be isolated while a replacement is planned? | Choose the supported platform that keeps the application stable, then set a retirement date. |
Cost and support decisions
A neutral, current apples-to-apples licensing comparison is not established here. Windows Server licensing depends on edition, cores, access rights, virtualization and purchasing agreement. Ubuntu can be used without a paid subscription in some configurations, while Ubuntu Pro adds support and security-maintenance coverage whose terms depend on plan and release. Cloud-provider images can bundle or alter these costs.

Best Value
A practical selection method
Use this process for a new service or a platform migration:
- Inventory requirements. List applications, databases, agents, identity dependencies, storage protocols, hardware drivers and vendor support statements.
- Choose candidate releases. Name the exact Ubuntu LTS or other distribution release and the exact Windows Server edition and channel. Record support end dates.
- Map patch scope. For Ubuntu, classify required packages by repository component and Pro coverage. For Windows, confirm the release’s update eligibility and servicing path.
- Define maintenance objectives. Set maximum patch delay, acceptable restart time, reboot windows and emergency-change criteria.
- Build a representative test environment. Include production integrations, authentication, backups, monitoring and realistic traffic.
- Rehearse updates and rollback. Measure service restart behavior, connection draining, reboot duration and restore time. Record the exact recovery steps.
- Automate evidence collection. Capture update success, failed packages, pending reboots, service health, backup status and exceptions in a central dashboard.
- Review quarterly. Recheck lifecycle dates, vendor support, subscriptions, vulnerabilities, capacity and the next major-release path.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Comparing “Linux” with “Windows” without versions
Replace the question with a concrete one, such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS versus Windows Server 2025 LTSC. Record release, edition, channel, repositories and support dates in the design document.
Treating automatic updates as unattended operations
Automation still needs monitoring, testing, exception handling and a reboot plan. Review Ubuntu unattended-upgrades logs and Windows update status; alert when a server is pending a restart or has failed repeatedly.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming Livepatch eliminates reboots
Livepatch covers selected high and critical kernel fixes. Continue normal kernel updates and schedule reboots for changes that cannot be applied live.
Confusing extended support with identical coverage
Extended support may have different eligibility, package scope or subscription terms. Verify exactly which security updates and components remain covered.
Using uptime as a platform attribute
Measure the proposed service in a controlled pilot: patch success, failed-change rate, recovery time, alert quality and user-visible interruption. Do not substitute an internet-wide uptime claim for workload evidence.
Bottom-line decision rules
- Choose Windows Server when the required application and the team’s operating model depend on Windows-specific support or integration, and select a release with a lifecycle that fits the project.
- Choose Ubuntu or another Linux distribution when the required workload is certified there and the team can own package scope, automation, upgrades and recovery.
- Choose neither on reputation alone. An unsupported release, untested patch process or weak recovery design can make either platform insecure and unreliable.
- For a mixed estate, standardize the same lifecycle inventory, patch-testing gates, monitoring, backup tests and escalation rules across both platforms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Windows Server 2022 still a fully supported release on October 16, 2026?
Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 notice places Windows Server 2022’s mainstream-support end date on October 13, 2026, with extended support described through October 14, 2031. Verify the current Microsoft lifecycle entry and the updates available to your edition.
Can Ubuntu security updates be installed without rebooting?
Some package and service updates can be applied while the system runs, and Canonical Livepatch can handle selected high- and critical-severity kernel fixes. Other kernel or system changes still require a planned reboot, so retain a reboot window.
What should a small team compare first?
Start with application certification, administrator expertise, release support dates and the team’s ability to test and recover patches. Those constraints usually narrow the choice faster than general platform reputation.
