For Salt and Soil, the Steam listing describes a playable historical family-simulation campaign spanning 1607 to 1900, while also warning that characters, homestead businesses and the economy are simpler than the developer’s version 1.0 target. The game’s AI-generated Family Council currently requires an internet connection. The sensible buying decision is therefore based on whether the described build is appealing today—not on assuming that every planned feature or date will arrive.
What Steam Early Access means
Steam Early Access lets a developer sell a game while development is still underway. You receive access to a playable build, but the product is unfinished and can change substantially. Content, balance, performance, interface design and system depth may all evolve before a full release.

Steam’s buyer guidance draws a practical line between the game that exists now and the game the developer hopes to make later. Before buying, inspect the current store description, screenshots, update history and player-facing information. If you are not excited to play the current build, Steam’s own advice is to wait for a future update or the full release.

An Early Access page can also display a notice when a game has gone more than 12 months without an update and an update-type event. That notice is a platform signal about update inactivity; it is not, by itself, proof that a project has been abandoned.

What Salt and Soil says is playable
The developer presents Salt and Soil as a frontier family simulation set across North America. According to the Steam listing checked on 13 October 2026, the planned Early Access build is intended to let players play through the full campaign from 1607 to 1900.
- Establish and manage a homestead.
- Raise a family and follow relationships across generations.
- Handle generational succession.
- Trade with neighbours and participate in a wider economy.
- Encounter historical events on a North American map.
The listing says the game supports 10 languages. These are the developer’s descriptions of the product; they are not a claim of independent hands-on testing or a performance assessment.
What “playable from start to finish” does—and does not—promise
The developer describes the campaign as playable from its opening in 1607 through 1900. That is important for players who want a complete historical arc rather than a short technology demo. It does not mean that every underlying system is at its final level of complexity.

The same listing explicitly says that characters, homestead businesses and the economy are simpler than intended for version 1.0. If your main reason for playing is intricate social simulation, detailed business management or a deeply modelled economy, treat that disclosure as central to the purchase decision. The campaign’s chronological scope can be broad while the systems driving it remain comparatively lightweight.

In other words, “complete campaign” and “finished simulation” are different claims. The first describes the range of the scenario. The second would describe the maturity and depth of its systems, which the developer says are still being developed.
How the Family Council works
The Family Council is a core feature described on the listing. Generative AI creates some annual family-council narrative text and structured choice outcomes from the current campaign state. The generation is constrained by the game’s historical setting, family data, localization rules and gameplay schema rather than being presented as unrestricted text generation.
This design means the council is tied to the state of your particular family and homestead. A decision can produce consequences that appear much later in the campaign, which is the reason the developer gives for wanting many people to play different campaigns and report what happens.
The current internet requirement
Salt and Soil currently requires an internet connection because the Family Council is generated by AI. That requirement matters if you play while travelling, use a connection with data limits, keep a gaming PC offline, or prefer not to use generative-AI features.

Offline play is a plan, not a current option
The developer lists offline play using a local language model as a planned version 1.0 addition. It is not described as available in the current Early Access build. Buyers who need offline access should therefore wait until that feature is actually released rather than treating the roadmap entry as a present capability.
Why is Salt and Soil in Early Access?
The developer’s explanation focuses on long-term consequences and balancing. The Steam listing says:
“In Salt and Soil, the consequences of a decision show up decades of game time later. I can’t test that kind of balance alone — it takes campaigns played by many different people. The game is playable from start to finish, and I want to finish it together with the people playing it.”

This is a request for varied player campaigns to expose balance problems and unexpected outcomes over a long timeline. It also tells you what kind of participation the developer expects: playing, observing how decisions ripple through generations, and providing feedback rather than simply waiting for a finished product.

How is the full version planned to differ?
The listing identifies several intended additions or deeper systems for version 1.0:
- More developed characters.
- Deeper homestead businesses.
- A more developed economy.
- Improved scenarios.
- Mod support.
- Offline play with a local language model.
The developer says the order of this work depends on player feedback. Steam’s roadmap guidance describes roadmaps as optional statements of direction, not binding schedules, and recommends avoiding precise promises unless the developer is confident they can deliver them. Treat every item above as a plan that may be revised, delayed or changed.
When is version 1.0, and what happens to the price?
The developer’s listing, checked on 13 October 2026, places the version 1.0 target in the first half of 2027. It also says the price will increase at version 1.0. Both statements are plans and can change before release. The listing does not establish a guaranteed launch day, a current price, or the size of any increase.

- Read the live Steam page. Confirm the current description, system requirements, language support, price and recent update information because Early Access details can change.
- Separate present features from planned ones. Treat the 1607–1900 campaign and the listed family, homestead, trade, neighbour and historical-event systems as the described current scope. Treat deeper characters, businesses, economy, improved scenarios, mod support and offline local-model play as future plans.
- Decide whether the AI requirement fits your circumstances. The Family Council currently needs an internet connection. That is a functional requirement, not merely an optional convenience.
- Set expectations about unfinished systems. The developer specifically identifies characters, homestead businesses and the economy as simpler than the 1.0 goal.
- Check development activity without overinterpreting it. Steam’s 12-month notice flags update inactivity, but it does not prove abandonment. Look at the developer’s recent communications and decide whether the current pace is acceptable to you.
- Buy only if the current build sounds fun. Steam’s standard Early Access warning is direct: “If you are not excited to play this game in its current state, then you should wait to see if the game progresses further in development.”
What the playtest tells prospective players
A Steam community announcement for a free playtest describes the build as early and says bugs, rough edges and balance issues are expected. It invites feedback. That supports the picture of a project seeking player input, but a playtest announcement is not an independent review and does not confirm the exact state of the final Early Access build.
Players who join at this stage should expect to encounter incomplete balancing and to communicate specific problems rather than treating every rough edge as a finished design decision.

What players should expect from the development relationship
The developer’s stated model is collaborative: people play long campaigns, report how consequences unfold, and help shape priorities. Because the campaign covers centuries, feedback may concern effects that only become visible many in-game decades after a decision. The roadmap’s order is explicitly dependent on that feedback, so the next improvement is not guaranteed to be the feature any one player wants most.
This relationship is different from buying a completed historical simulation. You are purchasing access to a work in progress whose direction remains partly open, while receiving a campaign the developer says can be played from start to finish.
Is Salt and Soil worth buying in Early Access?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer without a hands-on review, and the available information does not establish one. The listing supports a clear fit test instead. Buy now only if the described frontier-family campaign is attractive even with simpler characters, businesses and economic systems, and if you are comfortable with an internet-dependent AI Family Council and changing plans. Wait if you require offline access, dislike generative-AI gameplay, need mature simulation depth, or would rather judge the finished feature set and final price.
The most important distinction is between wanting to help shape a promising long campaign and wanting that campaign already completed. Early Access serves the first preference; waiting serves the second.
