Linux Rust drivers should use subsystem abstractions, not call generated C bindings directly. Keep the unsafe interaction with C inside carefully reviewed wrappers, and make each wrapper’s safety contract explicit. To get started, check the requirements for your checked-out kernel tree, build its Rust samples, and study the abstractions that already serve as examples.
How bindings, abstractions, and drivers fit together
Rust support in the kernel is no_std: kernel Rust code uses core, not the Rust standard library. The build uses bindgen to produce Rust declarations for selected C headers, but those generated bindings are low-level declarations—not a ready-made, safe driver API. The kernel’s rust/kernel/ abstraction layer wraps access to bindings and exposes APIs for in-kernel consumers. See the Linux kernel’s Rust General Information.

The intended direction is from a driver to a subsystem abstraction, and from that abstraction to the C API. The kernel documentation puts the design goal this way: “The main idea is to encapsulate all direct interaction with the kernel’s C APIs into carefully reviewed and documented abstractions.”

|---|---|---|
| Generated bindings | Declare selected C types and functions for Rust. | Low-level interface; availability does not make an operation safe or appropriate for a driver to call directly. |
| Subsystem abstraction | Encapsulate interaction with a C API and expose an API for Rust consumers. | Should be reviewed, documented, and as safe as the underlying operation allows. |
| Driver or other leaf module | Use subsystem APIs to implement device or subsystem behavior. | Should not reach around the abstraction layer to call generated bindings directly. |
The kernel’s General Information guide explicitly advises that leaf modules such as drivers should not use bindings directly; subsystems should provide abstractions that are as safe as possible. Coverage is incomplete and intended to grow. If bindgen cannot generate a particular C inline function or non-trivial macro, the guide allows a small helper wrapper in rust/helpers/.

What a useful abstraction does
An abstraction should do more than rename a C function. It should centralize the unsafe boundary and present a Rust API whose types and operations express the relevant ownership, lifetime, and error-handling rules. The kernel’s Mutex abstraction, for example, wraps the C struct mutex API. Other useful wrapper patterns include pairing resource acquisition with release through constructors and destructors, and translating C integer error codes into Rust Result values.
Before adding a wrapper, identify who owns the resource, when it may be accessed, how it is released, and how failure is represented. Then make those rules part of the API rather than leaving each driver to reconstruct them around raw bindings.

What makes an abstraction sound?
Rust syntax alone does not make an interface sound. The kernel documentation’s safety model is conditional: users of abstractions can avoid introducing undefined behavior only if the abstractions themselves are sound and every unsafe block and unsafe trait implementation satisfies its required safety contract. The abstraction author is responsible for establishing soundness; driver authors still have to follow the documented contract of any unsafe API they use.
- For the abstraction author: ensure that safe operations cannot permit undefined behavior, including through invalid lifetimes, aliasing, or resource use. Any assumptions that cannot be enforced by the API must be made explicit.
- For an unsafe API’s caller: meet every obligation stated in that function’s
# Safetydocumentation. - For an unsafe trait’s implementor: uphold every obligation stated in the trait’s
# Safetydocumentation. - For each unsafe implementation site: explain why that particular operation is valid under its preconditions.
These duties connect, but they are not interchangeable. A # Safety section tells callers or implementors what they must guarantee. A nearby // SAFETY: comment explains why the code at a specific unsafe site meets the relevant conditions.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
What a // SAFETY: comment should explain
Place a // SAFETY: comment immediately before every unsafe block. It should explain why the operation cannot cause undefined behavior and how its preconditions are met in this specific context—not merely label the block as unsafe or restate what the code does.
- Name the unsafe operation’s relevant preconditions.
- Explain which facts about the pointer, object, resource, lifetime, or synchronization state satisfy them.
- Describe how those facts are guaranteed and remain true for the duration of the operation.
- If correctness depends on a caller, implementor, or surrounding code, identify the relevant obligation or invariant.
For an unsafe function or trait, use rustdoc to document caller or implementor obligations in a # Safety section. Keep that API-level contract distinct from the implementation-level comment: one tells the user what must be true, while the other records why this use is sound.

Prepare the kernel tree and build its Rust examples
Use the Rust Quick Start that matches the kernel tree you intend to build. Required versions and available features depend on that tree, so do not assume a package example or tool version from another revision will apply. The current Rust Quick Start describes the prerequisites and checks below.
- Check the tree’s requirements. From the kernel source tree, run
make LLVM=1 rustavailable. It uses the same availability logic as Kconfig and explains unmet requirements. - Install matching build components. The build needs a recent Rust compiler, the Rust standard-library source component (
rust-src, because the kernel cross-compilescore), LLVM’slibclangfor bindgen, and bindgen. Select versions suitable for the checked-out tree. - Enable Rust. Once a suitable toolchain is detected, enable
CONFIG_RUSTunder General setup. - Build with the documented toolchain. The Quick Start describes a complete LLVM toolchain selected with
make LLVM=1as the best-supported setup. GCC may work for some configurations, but the guide characterizes that path as very experimental. - Enable and inspect Rust samples. In menuconfig, go to Kernel hacking → Sample kernel code → Rust samples. Study
samples/rust/alongside the support code inrust/; the Rust hacking menu is another place to inspect development options.
Toolchain components can come from suitable distribution packages, Rust toolchain installers, or the prebuilt LLVM-plus-Rust toolchains mentioned by the Quick Start. Compare options against the target tree’s required compiler and LLVM versions and whether they include rust-src, bindgen, and libclang. The guide’s distribution details can change; use the version-matched Quick Start rather than treating one package list as universal.

Use development tools without confusing them with build prerequisites
The kernel documentation distinguishes the components needed to build from tools useful during development. The Quick Start gives these commands for generating or running development aids:
| Purpose | Command |
|---|---|
Generate rust-project.json for rust-analyzer |
make LLVM=1 rust-analyzer |
| Build local Rust API documentation | make LLVM=1 rustdoc |
| Run Clippy in the build | make LLVM=1 CLIPPY=1 |
rustfmt, clippy, rustdoc, and rust-analyzer can help with formatting, linting, documentation, and editor support. Clippy has an important qualification: the kernel’s General Information guide warns it may change code generation, so do not enable it when building a production kernel.
Follow kernel Rust documentation and style conventions
The Rust Coding Guidelines describe conventions that support review and maintenance:
- Write API documentation in rustdoc Markdown. Start with a brief description of the item; add a
# Safetysection for unsafe operations and a# Examplessection where examples help users. - Keep panics rare. Prefer a fallible approach, typically
Result, when an operation can fail. - Format Rust code with
rustfmtand use the kernel’s vertical import style to reduce merge and rebase conflicts. - Review prose comments and documentation conventions separately:
rustfmtdoes not validate them.
A practical review should therefore check both code and contract: whether unsafe operations are encapsulated at the right layer, whether the abstraction’s safe API is actually sound, and whether its rustdoc and local safety comments explain the guarantees and obligations clearly.
