Linux Mint vs Ubuntu: Which Is Easier for Beginners?

Linux Mint Cinnamon is a practical pick for a familiar desktop; Ubuntu may suit beginners who prefer GNOME and Ubuntu’s documentation. Test both on your hardware.

For many beginners who want a familiar panel-and-menu desktop, Linux Mint Cinnamon is a sensible starting point. Ubuntu Desktop is also approachable, and may suit you better if you prefer its GNOME layout or want Ubuntu’s official documentation and ecosystem. There is no universal winner: the easiest choice is the one that feels clear on your computer and supports the devices you use.

What feels different in everyday use?

The biggest day-to-day difference is the desktop, not a measure of how capable either operating system is. Linux Mint offers Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce; Mint lists Cinnamon as its most popular edition. Ubuntu’s current main Desktop download identifies GNOME 50 as its desktop. See the Linux Mint editions and release information and Ubuntu Desktop download page.

  • Choose Mint Cinnamon if you want a conventional panel-and-menu workflow that may feel familiar if you have used Windows.
  • Choose Ubuntu if GNOME’s layout makes more sense to you, or you prefer Ubuntu’s official how-to materials and ecosystem.

These are practical recommendations based on the desktops and documentation, not results of a controlled ease-of-use comparison. Linux Mint describes itself as “designed to be comfortable and easy to use but also powerful and configurable”; that is Mint’s own characterization, not an independent verdict.

Can you do common tasks without using the terminal?

Both distributions provide graphical ways to install and update software and guide users through installation. Ubuntu’s Desktop documentation includes installation, software, upgrades, and an introduction to the command line. Beginners can follow graphical paths for many routine tasks; learning some command-line basics can help later, but choosing either system does not mean you must start there.

How do support periods compare?

Compare specific releases rather than treating “Ubuntu” as a single support track: Ubuntu offers LTS and interim releases. The current versions and support terms listed by the projects are:

Release Support information What to note
Linux Mint 22.3 (Zena) Supported through April 2029, according to Mint’s release listing. Mint says its LTS releases receive five years of support. The current release listing identifies Ubuntu Noble as the base.
Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS Five years of free security and maintenance updates; Canonical says coverage can be extended up to 15 years with Ubuntu Pro, on its Desktop download page. Ubuntu also has interim releases, so check that you are choosing the LTS track if long-term support is your priority.

These release details were checked on October 4, 2026. Verify the project’s current listing before downloading, since release names and support dates change.

Will either one work better on your computer?

A distribution’s reputation does not establish compatibility with a particular laptop or desktop. Wi-Fi, graphics, suspend, display scaling, fingerprint readers, docks, and other peripherals can vary by exact hardware.

  1. Download the edition you are considering and make a live USB, if that edition supports trying a live session.
  2. Boot from it and test the devices and functions you rely on, including Wi-Fi, graphics, sleep and wake, display scaling, and external peripherals.
  3. If the hardware checks out, proceed with installation. For Ubuntu, the installer can offer to download updates and third-party drivers, including drivers such as NVIDIA; the option is described in its installation tutorial.
  4. On Mint, proprietary drivers are not installed by default, though Mint says they are easy to install; see its FAQ.

Driver options do not guarantee that a particular device will work. Testing the live environment is the useful check for your own machine.

What if your computer has limited memory or storage?

Consider the desktop edition as well as the distribution. Mint’s FAQ lists 2GB of RAM and 20GB of disk space as minimum requirements, and recommends 4GB of RAM for comfortable use. Mint says Xfce is lighter on resources than its other editions. Ubuntu’s 26.04 release notes recommend considering an Ubuntu flavor for lower-specification systems. Those are project-published figures and recommendations, not promises of smooth performance on every computer.

For an older or resource-limited machine, compare Mint Xfce with Ubuntu flavors rather than assuming the standard desktops will feel the same. Test the choices on the actual hardware.

Which one should a beginner choose?

  • Start with Linux Mint Cinnamon if your main goal is a familiar, conventional desktop and straightforward everyday use.
  • Start with Ubuntu Desktop LTS if you prefer GNOME or value Ubuntu’s official documentation, broader ecosystem, and current Ubuntu release base.
  • Try both live environments if you are undecided; compare the desktop workflow and confirm your hardware works before installing.

The quickest route to a confident choice is to spend a little time using each desktop on the computer you plan to install it on. A preference for one layout is personal; neither project’s published support or hardware guidance proves that it is easier for every beginner.
