Choose a laptop with a dedicated GPU when the games or creative applications you use need more graphics performance. Before buying, check the requirements for your actual apps and games against the exact laptop configuration: the GPU label alone does not guarantee a particular result.
What is the difference between integrated and dedicated graphics?
Integrated graphics is built into the processor and uses system memory shared with the CPU. Dedicated graphics—also called discrete graphics—is a separate GPU with its own memory. Intel summarizes the distinction in its graphics support article, last reviewed September 4, 2024.

A separate GPU and its own memory generally allow more graphics performance, but usually use more power and produce more heat. Those are broad architectural tendencies, not guarantees that every dedicated GPU will outperform every integrated GPU in every task. The specific processor, GPU, laptop cooling and workload all matter.

An integrated GPU uses a portion of system RAM when needed; it does not have a separate physical bank of graphics memory. Intel’s Windows graphics-memory FAQ, last reviewed January 13, 2026, explains that the driver makes shared memory available according to workload. A “dedicated” memory figure shown for an integrated GPU may be a compatibility-reporting value, not evidence of a separate VRAM bank. Check what the laptop specification means before comparing memory figures.

Which type fits your workload?
| What you do | Likely fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Web browsing, office apps, video calls and media playback | Integrated graphics is often sufficient | Confirm the rest of the laptop meets your needs, including its memory, display and battery performance. |
| Gaming | Depends on the game and the laptop configuration | Compare the exact GPU and laptop against the game’s recommended requirements, including the resolution and settings you expect to use. |
| Intensive photo or video editing, design and other graphics-heavy creative work | A dedicated GPU may be a better fit | Check the specific application’s requirements and consider project size and complexity. |
Microsoft lists gaming and intensive photo or video editing and design among tasks suited to discrete GPUs in its guides to graphics processing units and choosing a computer. That does not mean every game or creative task requires one: some current integrated-graphics processor families can handle some gaming. Lenovo likewise advises buyers to check the games’ requirements in its laptop buying guide. Use the requirements for the software you actually plan to run rather than treating either GPU category as a guarantee.
How do power, heat and battery life compare?
Integrated graphics typically uses less power and produces less heat than a dedicated GPU, a difference that can help a laptop run longer on battery. Intel describes this as a general tendency, not a promise about a particular machine. Actual battery life depends on the whole laptop and how you use it; the GPU category alone cannot provide a reliable runtime estimate.

A dedicated GPU may be worthwhile if its performance is needed for your work or games, but it brings a power-and-heat trade-off. Compare the exact laptop’s battery tests, cooling, portability, display and price along with its GPU. There is no universal performance multiplier, price premium or battery-life difference that applies to every pair of laptops.

What if a laptop has both types of graphics?
Some laptops include integrated and dedicated GPUs and switch between them depending on the workload. NVIDIA’s Optimus technology can enable the discrete GPU for applications that benefit from it and turn it off for less demanding tasks, allowing integrated graphics to conserve power. AMD describes a similar approach in its guide to laptop switchable graphics, using the discrete adapter for 3D applications and the integrated adapter for lighter work.

AMD recommends using laptop-manufacturer drivers for compatibility; follow the guidance for your specific model.
Quick Recap
How to choose between two laptop configurations
- Start with your workload. List the games, creative apps and other demanding software you expect to use.
- Check requirements against the exact configuration. Use each game’s recommended specifications and each application’s requirements. Verify the GPU model, not just whether the listing says integrated or dedicated.
- Consider the work you expect to do. Resolution, graphics settings and project complexity can affect whether a GPU is suitable.
- Compare the rest of each laptop. Look at display, portability, cooling, price and battery tests for the specific configurations. Do not infer a fixed runtime or performance gap from the GPU category.
- Check memory and driver details. Distinguish shared system RAM from dedicated VRAM. For a laptop with both GPUs, confirm how graphics switching is handled and use the manufacturer’s driver guidance.
