For a command line, use SSH; to browse files, use SFTP. These are separate access methods, and the right choice depends on what you need to do.
Choose the connection you need
| What you want to do | Use | What it provides |
|---|---|---|
| Control a graphical Linux Mint desktop | xrdp with an RDP client |
A remote graphical login. The available session and setup can depend on your Mint edition and desktop configuration. |
| Run commands in a terminal | OpenSSH | An encrypted remote shell connection. |
| Browse or transfer files | SFTP over SSH | Remote file access through a compatible file manager or client. |
RDP is the option for interacting with the desktop; SSH and SFTP are better suited to terminal work and files. They are not interchangeable.

Connect to the Mint desktop with xrdp
xrdp is an open-source Remote Desktop Protocol server. Its project says it accepts Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Client on Windows and macOS, as well as other RDP clients. On the Mint computer, xrdp provides a graphical login, but the exact session configuration can vary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors1. Prepare the Mint computer
Install and configure an xrdp server on the Linux Mint machine, following instructions appropriate to its Mint release and desktop session. The xrdp project describes connections to a local X.org session using xorgxrdp drivers, to a VNC X11 server, or onward to another RDP server. Which mode is appropriate depends on the system; there is no single verified recipe that applies to every Mint edition and configuration.

2. Open an RDP client on Windows or macOS
Use an RDP client and enter the Mint computer’s reachable host name or IP address. Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Client is explicitly listed as compatible by the xrdp project for both Windows and macOS. The Mint computer must be reachable from the client over the network.
3. Sign in and check the session
When prompted, authenticate with the appropriate Linux account credentials. Depending on the Mint session and xrdp configuration, the resulting desktop may behave differently from the local session. If login fails or the session does not start, check the xrdp and desktop-session instructions for your installed Mint release rather than assuming that a configuration for another release applies.
The xrdp project lists clipboard transfer, audio redirection, and drive redirection among its features. Their availability in a particular connection depends on the client and configuration.

Use SSH for a remote terminal
SSH is the simpler fit when you only need a shell rather than the graphical desktop. Linux Mint community guidance describes installing the OpenSSH server, allowing SSH through UFW when that firewall is in use, and connecting with a user name and host address. These are community instructions, not a release-specific official Mint manual; check current instructions for your installation.
-
On the Mint computer, install and configure the OpenSSH server. The community tutorial gives
apt install openssh-serveras an example command. -
If UFW is enabled, allow SSH according to your firewall setup. The tutorial’s example is
sudo ufw allow ssh.Rank #3

A later Mint forum exchange describes socket-activation behavior in one installation, illustrating why server status and startup behavior can differ. If SSH does not accept connections, check the current service and network configuration for your release instead of relying on one forum example.
Browse Mint files with SFTP
SFTP transfers files over SSH. If your file manager supports it, connect to the Mint computer using an SFTP address and the same relevant account and host details used for remote access. Linux Mint forum guidance describes Cinnamon’s file manager workflow as opening Connect to a server… and choosing or entering an SFTP connection. Menu labels and available options can vary by desktop and version.

Remmina is another client option whose project lists RDP, SSH, SPICE, VNC, X2Go, and HTTP/HTTPS protocol plugins. Linux Mint Community also describes it as supporting RDP, VNC, X2Go, and SSH, with external plugins. That protocol support does not establish it as the recommended native client on both Windows and macOS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure access before connecting over the internet
The xrdp project says RDP transport is encrypted with TLS by default, and the Mint forum tutorial describes SSH as an encrypted channel. Encryption protects traffic in transit, but it does not by itself make an internet-exposed service safe. Remote access also depends on which networks can reach the service and how accounts are authenticated.

Prefer access limited to a trusted network or another controlled private connection when possible.

Do not treat a forum port-forwarding example as a universal recommendation. Exposing a service beyond the local network changes who can attempt to reach it and requires deliberate network and authentication choices.
Troubleshoot the most common connection issues
-
The client cannot reach the host: Confirm that the host name or IP is correct and reachable from the client, and check network and firewall rules on the path.

RDP connects but the desktop does not start as expected: Check the Mint desktop session and xrdp mode. Session behavior can depend on the release and configuration; individual reports about older Mint versions do not establish how current installations behave.
-
SSH or SFTP fails: Verify that the OpenSSH server is installed and available, that the account and host details are correct, and that firewall rules allow the connection. SFTP relies on SSH access.
-
A guide’s steps do not match your system: Confirm its Mint release and desktop assumptions. Community listings and forum posts are useful leads, but they are not a guarantee that the same commands or session behavior apply across all Mint editions.
