One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Instagram rejects a backup code, first confirm that the prompt is asking for an Instagram backup code—not an SMS login code or an authenticator-app code. Then check that the saved code belongs to the account you’re signing into and was entered accurately. If it still fails, use the recovery options Instagram presents for that account; the available options can vary.
Check which kind of code Instagram is requesting
Backup codes, authenticator-app codes, and SMS codes are different credentials. A code from a text message or authenticator app will not serve as a backup code when Instagram explicitly asks for one. Read the prompt carefully and use the matching method if Instagram offers it.

Why a saved backup code may be rejected
It belongs to a different Instagram account
If you manage more than one account, check that the code was saved for the account whose login you are completing. A code associated with another account will not verify this one.
The code was copied or entered incorrectly
Compare what you entered with the saved code, including every character. If you copied it from a note or document, make sure you selected the intended code rather than a neighboring entry.

The code is no longer accepted
The accessible Instagram guidance does not establish the current rules for when a backup code is rejected, including whether codes expire, must be used in a particular order, or can be used more than once. Don’t assume a particular rule explains the error; try another code you have saved for the same account, if available, or move to Instagram’s recovery flow.
What to do if no saved code works
- Check for another verification method. If Instagram offers a different way to verify your identity on the login screen, use one that you can access. The methods offered may depend on the account.
- Use Instagram’s login help and recovery flow. Follow the instructions shown for your account rather than relying on a recovery method that may not be offered. Instagram’s Help Center identifies login help as relevant when someone loses access to account contact information, but the full instructions were not accessible for verification. See Instagram’s Help Center article about losing access to the linked email address or phone number.
- Keep any working session signed in. If you can still access the account on another device or browser you control, don’t log out while checking account security or recovery details.
If you suspect someone has accessed your account
Treat the problem as a possible account-security issue, not only a code-entry problem. When you can access the account, review its security and recovery contact details and use Meta’s Instagram security guidance. Meta’s July 13, 2021 article says Instagram will never send you a DM; it also describes checking authentic communications in the app’s “Emails from Instagram” area. Be wary of messages claiming to be support and asking for sensitive information.

After you regain access
Check that the email address and phone number associated with the account are current, and make sure you can reach the second-factor recovery method you use. Meta recommends keeping contact information up to date and using two-factor authentication. Its security article also describes Security Checkup for accounts that may have been hacked, though the article does not establish the current menu path or labels.
