If the versions differ, the machine is still running a different kernel; installing kernel files does not activate them in memory. A reboot-required indicator can be useful, but the running version is the direct check.
Check the running kernel version
- Find the exact kernel release you intended to install. Use the package manager or your distribution’s update records; package names and commands differ between distributions, so do not apply an RPM command to Ubuntu or Debian, or vice versa.
- Run this in a terminal:
uname -r - Compare the complete output with the intended installed release. Check the numeric release, distribution build or ABI revision, flavor (such as
genericor a cloud flavor), and any architecture-specific suffix. Do not remove suffixes just to make two strings appear to match. Ubuntu’s kernel documentation says this command prints the loaded kernel’s version and flavor. - If the output matches, the intended kernel is running. If it is older or otherwise different, that kernel is not currently running. More than one kernel can be installed at once.
Ubuntu’s kernel instructions call for rebooting after installation and then checking the version. For a production system or other uptime-sensitive machine, schedule the reboot under your maintenance and availability procedures, then run uname -r again.
Why installing a kernel does not confirm it is active
A kernel update writes files to disk, but the machine can continue running the previously loaded kernel in memory. The new on-disk kernel becomes the running kernel only after the system boots into it. Canonical explains this distinction in its Ubuntu cloud-update guidance.
That is why a package manager reporting a successful installation is not proof of activation. The release string from uname -r answers the kernel-specific question: which kernel is running now?

Use reboot indicators as supporting evidence
Ubuntu and Debian-derived systems
On systems that use the Debian convention, /run/reboot-required signals that a package has requested a reboot; /run/reboot-required.pkgs may list the packages involved. Ubuntu also documents pro system reboot-required as a way to query whether installed updates signaled a reboot, and notes that the package list often includes kernel, libc, or dbus updates. See Canonical’s cloud-update guidance.
These markers say that a reboot was requested, not that one has happened. Debian Policy §9.12 describes the marker as a convention and explicitly says it offers no guarantee about when or whether the requested reboot will occur. An absent marker is not universal proof that no reboot is needed. For this kernel check, compare uname -r with the intended release. The convention is documented in the Debian Policy Manual.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux
On RHEL, needs-restarting -r can help identify whether a reboot is needed after updates. Treat it as a hint, not as proof that a particular kernel is running. Red Hat’s reboot guidance lists kernel packages among updates that require a reboot for full use.
There is a documented RHEL 9 exception: after kernel-core is installed or updated without the kernel meta-package, dnf needs-restarting -r can incorrectly report that a reboot is not necessary. Red Hat documents the case in its RHEL 9 note. Check uname -r directly after rebooting rather than relying on that hint alone.

If the intended kernel still is not running after reboot
First run uname -r again and compare the full release string. If it still does not match, check that the intended kernel package was installed and which kernel the bootloader selected. The right recovery steps depend on the distribution, bootloader, and hardware configuration; there is no single safe procedure that applies to every Linux system. Ubuntu’s kernel instructions establish rebooting and rechecking, not a universal bootloader-repair method.
What Livepatch changes—and what it does not
Ubuntu Livepatch can apply supported security patches to the kernel currently running in memory, reducing the need for an immediate reboot for those patches. It does not activate a newly installed kernel package on disk. Continue installing ordinary kernel package updates and verify uname -r after the planned reboot. Canonical describes this distinction in its cloud-update guidance.
