For a simple edit, use YouTube’s own app; for automatic highlight suggestions, try CapCut; for templates and layered editing on mobile, consider Adobe Premiere. Each can help reshape footage you already own, but the best result still depends on checking the clip, vertical framing, captions, and audio before publishing.

Choose YouTube for a straightforward edit
If you only need to select a moment, make a few edits, personalize it, and publish, YouTube’s own workflow keeps creation and publishing close together. You can also connect the finished Short to a related longer video in Studio.

Choose CapCut for suggested highlights
If you are starting with a long recording, CapCut’s described highlight detection may help you find candidate moments more quickly. It does not remove the need to decide whether a suggested cut has enough context or whether its captions are accurate.

Choose Premiere for more control
If you want templates, multiple editing tracks, and a mobile workflow that can publish to YouTube, Premiere is the closer fit. Its documented workflow emphasizes editing control rather than automatically choosing highlights.
A practical workflow for making a Short
- Start with your original footage or a copy. Choose a moment that makes sense on its own instead of relying on viewers to watch the full source first.
- Use automatic suggestions only as a first pass. If highlight detection is available, inspect each proposed clip’s start, end, and context. Remove cuts that begin too late, end too soon, or leave the point unclear.
- Reframe for vertical viewing. Keep faces, products, captions, and other important details in the visible area. Check the crop throughout the clip, not just on its opening frame.
- Review text and sound. Compare captions, names, numbers, and punctuation against the original audio. Check that music and other included assets are permitted for your intended use and comply with platform restrictions.
- Add context if it helps. A short explanation, voiceover, or other purposeful edit can make the excerpt clearer and more recognizably yours.
- Publish and connect the source if useful. Publish through the editor or export and upload through YouTube. You can then consider adding the longer source as a related video in YouTube Studio.
Ownership does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policy says reused content is assessed at the channel level. It describes reused content as repurposed material without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. The policy is separate from copyright enforcement: owning or having permission to use the footage does not, by itself, settle whether a channel meets the reused-content standard.

For footage you own, make the Short purposeful and recognizably authored. YouTube says creators can use automated tools and templates, but the final content should still show creative vision and provide educational or entertainment value. No editing tool can guarantee monetization.
